Asier Aranzubia, Zigor Etxebeste y Paula Arantzazu Ruiz sonlas personas seleccionadas en la tercera edición de las Becas José Ángel Herrero-Velarde del Festival de San Sebastián y Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE). Durante dos semanas del mes de julio, los tres han disfrutado de una residencia en las dependencias de Artxiboa, el archivo histórico del Festival donde Aranzubia ha recabado material para su investigación sobre la influencia de los festivales en la conformación del canon cinematográfico, con especial atención a El espíritu de la colmena (1973); Etxebeste ha anlizado las retrospectivas y visitas de cineastas del Hollywood clásico durante la época de Miguel de Echarri como director del certamen entre 1967 y 1977, y Ruiz se ha centrado en la importancia que a partir de 1965 tuvieron las Jornadas Internacionales de Cine y TV Educativos, Científicos y Culturales de San Sebastián, que contribuyeron al desarrollo del cine científico-médico.

Asier Aranzubia, Zigor Etxebeste and Paula Arantzazu Ruiz are the three researchers who have recently benefited from the third edition for José Ángel Herrero-Velarde grants, organized by the San Sebastian Festival and Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (EQZE). For two weeks in July, the three have enjoyed a residency at the Artxiboa facilities, the Festival's historical archive where Aranzubia has gathered material for his research on the influence of festivals on film production, particularly focusing on El espíritu de la colmena / The Spirit of the Beehive, 1973; Etxebeste has analyzed the retrospectives and visits of filmmakers from Hollywood's Golden Age during the mandate of Miguel de Echarri as director of the event from 1967 to 1977, and Ruiz has focused on the importance from 1965 onwards of San Sebastian'sInternational Meeting of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Cinema and TV, with its contribution to the development of science and medicine films.

As part of the Film Talks section, Laura Carreira discussed the potential of film to promote change and shake people's consciences, as well as telling stories that can transform society’s response to crises. The Portuguese filmmaker won the Silver Shell for Best Director with her feature film debut, On Falling (Official Selection, 2024). Carreira’s intervention took place on September 26 2024 at the Tabakalera Cinema during the 72nd edition of the San Sebastian Festival. Moderated by Amaia Serrulla, head of the Documentation and Film Department, the film talk was one of those programmed as part of the Nest section.

On 24 September 2024, a conversation on music and film was held at the Tabakalera Cinema, with the participation of Antón Álvarez (C. Tangana), who won a special mention at the Kutxabank-New Directors Award with his debut film, La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés. Carlos Heredero, Harri Fernández and Sonia García López are the three new researchers who have recently benefited from the second edition for José Ángel Herrero-Velarde grants. Heredero is researching the relationship between the Festival and the New Spanish Cinema of the 1960s, Fernández is studying the historical presence of animated films at the Festival and García López is focusing on the influence of the International Film Schools Conference on events such as May ‘68.

Joxean Fernández, director of the Basque Film Archive and member of the San Sebastian Festival's management and selection committees, hosts this special episode of the Zinemaldia podcast dedicated to Klasikoak. Under this new brand, a kind of classical film festival was born, extended in time and space, bringing together three pre-existing programmes: the Basque Film Arcive’s Spring season, the Festival classic retrospective and its Klasikoak section. Guest voices in the podcast are Valeria Camporesi, director of the Spanish Film Archive; Quim Casas and Felipe Cabrerizo, coordinators of the retrospective on poliziesco (Italian crime films); and filmmaker Montxo Armendáriz, whose film 'Tasio' (1984) has just been restored by the Basque Film Archive after 40 years after its release and will open the festival's Klasikoak section after its screening at Cannes Classics.

On 29 September 2023, as part of the film talks of the 71st San Sebastian Festival, Artur Tort spoke at the Tabakalera cinema about his work as a cinematographer and editor. Tort works regularly with filmmaker lbert Serra, and their last collaboration, Tourment sur les îles / Pacifiction (2022), earned him the César Award for Best Cinematography.

En el marco de la 71ª edición del Festival de San Sebastián, el 28 de septiembre de 2023 se realizó en la Sala Z de Tabakalera el encuentro Vestida de azul: Memoria y activismo trans en el Festival de 1983. Sirvió para celebrar, por un lado, el 40º aniversario del estreno en el Festival de Vestida de azul (1983), un documental de Antonio Giménez Rico que recoge las experiencias de mujeres trans durante la Transición, y por otro, el estreno de la segunda temporada de la serie Veneno, basada en aquel filme. En la cita participaron el activista Julen Zabala, el guionista Ian de la Rosa, la actriz Lola Rodríguez y Nacha, una de las seis mujeres trans que protagonizaron Vestida de azul.

As part of the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Festival, the meeting Vestida de azul: Trans Memory and activism at the 1983 Festival was held in the Tabakalera’s Z Room . The event celebrated, on the one hand, the 40th anniversary of the premiere at the San Sebastian Festival of Vestida de azul (1983), a documentary by Antonio Giménez Rico that follows the experiences of transgender women during the Spanish Transition and, on the other, the imminent arrival of the second season of the series Veneno, based on said film. The event was attended by activist Julen Zabala, screenwriter Ian de la Rosa, actress Lola Rodríguez and Nacha, one of the six trans women protagonists of Vestida de Azul.

On 26 September, as part of the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Festival, Tabakalera’s Z Room hosted a film talk by Deborah Williams on the value of diversity in the audiovisual sector. Williams is Executive Director at Creative Diversity Network and has been working for more than 30 years in television, cinema and the theatre, as well as on policy design in the cultural and creative industries in general; she designed the BFI diversity standards and the equality analysis process at the Arts Council England.

El 25 de septiembre de 2023 tuvo lugar en la sala de cine de Tabakalera el encuentro de las y los estudiantes de Nest con Christian Petzold, el cineasta alemán que compitió en la Sección Oficial con Phoenix (2014) y logró el Premio FIPRESCI. En su regreso a San Sebastián en la 71ª edición, no sólo presentó en Perlak la película Roter Himmel / Afire (El cielo rojo) tras ganar el Gran Premio del Jurado en la Berlinale, sino que también ejerció de miembro del Jurado Oficial.
2023ko irailaren 25ean, Nesteko ikasleak Christian Petzoldekin elkartu ziren Tabakalerako zinema-aretoan. On 25 September 2023, the Nest students met at the Tabakalera cinema with Christian Petzold, the German filmmaker who was in the Official Selection with Phoenix (2014) and won the FIPRESCI Award. Returning to San Sebastian for the 71st edition, he not only presented his film Red Sky / Afire in the Perlak section, after winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale. He was also a member of the Official Jury.

Avilés presentó en New Directors su primera película, La camarista / The Chambermaid (2018), y este año ha sido presidenta del jurado del Premio Nest The Mediapro Studio de la 71ª edición del Festival de San Sebastián.

La directora estadounidense, que en 2018 participó con el cortometraje Nettles en Nest, regresó a San Sebastián para presentar en la 71ª edición su debut en el largometraje, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt. On 26 September 2023, the Tabakalera Cinema hosted a masterclass by Raven Jackson. The American director, who participated in Nest in 2018 with her short film Nettles, returned to San Sebastian to present her feature film debut, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt at the 71st edition of the Festival. The film had its world premiere in the US Dramatic Competition section at Sundance and was part of the Ikusmira Berriak residency programme during its project phase.

The directors Cris Trenas, Rogelio González and Santos Bacana, from the production company Little Spain, and artist C. Tangana, who stars in Esta ambición desmedida / This Excessive Ambition (Velodrome), talked about the creative process that led them to embark on this the documentary project, and about the limits, or lack of them, when it comes to creating. The Film Talk took place on 30 September 2023 at the Tabakalera cinema as part of the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Festival.

Minerva Campos, Violeta Kovacsics y Aida Vallejo son las tres nuevas investigadoras que estos días han disfrutado de la segunda convocatoria de las becas José Ángel Herrero-Velarde. Por un lado, Campos investiga la relación del Festival con la Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Productores de Cine, la FIAPF; por otro, Kovacsics explora el cine de la Transición y los retos y dificultades que atravesaba en aquellos años el certamen donostiarra; y finalmente, Vallejo se centra en la historia sociocultural del Festival a través del análisis de los espacios en los que se desarrolla.

Minerva Campos, Violeta Kovacsics and Aida Vallejo are the three new researchers who have recently benefited from the second call for José Ángel Herrero-Velarde grants. On the one hand, Campos is researching the Festival's relationship with the International Federation of Film Producers' Associations, the FIAPF; on the other, Kovacsics is exploring the cinema of the Transition and the challenges and difficulties faced by the event in those years; and finally, Vallejo is focusing on the socio-cultural history of the Festival by analysing the spaces in which it is held.

Endika Rey, Neus Sabaté y Felipe Cabrerizo han pasado dos semanas en ARTXIBOA, el archivo del Festival de San Sebastián, trabajando en sus investigaciones. Son las tres primeras personas en beneficiarse de las becas José Ángel Herrero-Velarde, organizadas por el Festival de San Sebastián y Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, y promovidas por la Diputación de Gipuzkoa. En la primera convocatoria de las becas están investigando los trabajos de los nuevos directores que han pasado por el Festival, el cine de los países de la órbita socialista y el reencuentro de Josefina Molina, Pilar Miró y Cecilia Bartolomé en San Sebastián.

Endika Rey, Neus Sabaté and Felipe Cabrerizo spent two weeks at ARTXIBOA, the San Sebastian Festival archive, working on their research. They are the first three people to benefit from the José Ángel Herrero-Velarde grants, organized by the San Sebastian Festival and the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, and promoted by Gipuzkoa Provincial Council. In the first call for submissions, they are researching the work of new directors who have taken part in the Festival, cinema in the sphere of socialist countries and the reunion between Josefina Molina, Pilar Miró and Cecilia Bartolomé in San Sebastian.

Zergatik? Kapitulu honetan galdera horri eta beste hainbat konturi erantzuna ematen saiatuko dira Maialen Beloki Zinemaldiko zuzendariordea, Irati Crespo Artxiboko lankidea eta Beñat Sarasola ikerlari eta irakaslea. Horretarako, Euskadiko Filmategian gordetzen den Eceizaren artxibo pertsonaletik hiru dokumentu hautatu dituzte.
Antxon Eceiza fue crítico de cine e importante representante de la corriente Nuevo Cine Español; tuvo distintas responsabilidades en el Festival de San Sebastián; produjo la serie documental ‘Ikuska’ y dirigió, entre otras películas, ‘Ke arteko egunak’; fue pionero del cine hecho en euskera, director y activista al mismo tiempo… Pero doce años después de su muerte, el donostiarra continúa vinculado a la etiqueta de director ‘maldito’. ¿Por qué? En este episodio trataremos de dar respuesta a esa y otras cuestiones junto a Maialen Beloki, subdirectora del Festival; Irati Crespo, compañera del Archivo, y Beñat Sarasola, investigador y profesor. Para ello, han elegido tres objetos del archivo personal de Eceiza custodiado en la Filmoteca Vasca.
Antxon Eceiza was a film critic and an important representative of the New Spanish Cinema movement; he had different responsibilities at the San Sebastian Festival; he produced the documentary series 'Ikuska' and directed, among other films, 'Ke arteko egunak'; he was a pioneer of films made in Basque, director and activist at the same time... But twelve years after his death, the San Sebastian-born filmmaker is still linked to the label of 'cursed' director. Why? In this episode we will try to answer this and other questions with Maialen Beloki, deputy director of the Festival; Irati Crespo, a colleague from the Archive, and researcher and teacher Beñat Sarasola. To do so, they have chosen three objects from Eceiza's personal archive held at the Basque Film Archive.

Donostia Kulturaren Literaktum jaialdiarekin elkarlanean, 2022ko irailaren 19an zinemaren eta literaturaren arteko harremanei buruzko solasaldia izan zen Okendo kultur etxean, Selva Almadaren eskutik. Lucrecia Martel bezalako zuzendarien lanari lotuta egon den idazle eta gidoilari argentinarra New Directorseko epaimahaikide izan zen Donostia Zinemaldiaren 70. edizioan.
In collaboration with the Literaktum Festival of Donostia Kultura, the Okendo cultural centre hosted a conversation on 19 September 2022 on the relationship between film and literature with Selva Almada. The Argentinian writer and screenwriter, who has worked alongside directors such as Lucrecia Martel, was a member of the New Directors jury at the 70th San Sebastian Festival.

La cineasta boliviana Natalia López Gallardo impartió una clase magistral en la 70ª edición del Festival de San Sebastián tras la proyección de su última película, 'Manto de gemas', que formó parte de la programación de Zabaltegi-Tabakalera tras ser reconocida con el Premio del Jurado de la Berlinale. La charla tuvo lugar en el cine de Tabakalera el 23 de septiembre de 2022.
Natalia López Gallardo zinemagile boliviarrak eskola magistral bat eman zuen Donostia Zinemaldiko 70. edizioan. Saioa Tabakalerako zinema aretoan egin zuen, 2022ko irailaren 23an, eta bere azken filmak, 'Manto de gemas' izenekoak, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera saileko programazioan parte hartu zuen Berlinaleko Epaimahaiaren Saria irabazi ondoren.
The Bolivian filmmaker Natalia López Gallardo gave a master class at the 70th San Sebastian Festival following the screening of her latest film, 'Manto de gemas', which formed part of the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera programme after winning the Berlinale Jury Prize. The talk took place at the Tabakalera cinema on 23 September 2022.
