S2E7: The Unexpected Success Hack: The Power of Doing Hard Things

You have goals in business, fitness, and life, but distractions keep getting in the way.

The easy, "cheap" pleasures - like scrolling through LinkedIn, checking your email for the 178th time in an hour, or binge-watching Orange is the New Black - feel great in the moment but often leave us feeling unproductive and guilty. More importantly, they keep us from completing the tasks that actually matter.

This post explores one of the key insights from the book Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence by Anna Lembke, an American psychiatrist, author, and professor specializing in addiction medicine.

S2E1: Season 2 Premiere: The Unseen Growth – How to Build Habits That Actually Stick

Welcome back to Screw Being Unhappy! We’re kicking off Season 2 with a powerful lesson on consistency, patience, and why real change takes time.

This episode was inspired by a single leaf from my African violet. 🌿 For months, it looked like nothing was happening. But underground, growth was happening. A year later, it’s a thriving plant. And that’s exactly how habits work.

Too often, we expect instant results. When we don’t see progress fast enough, we quit. But real, lasting success comes from sticking with small actions—even when it feels like nothing is changing.

In this episode, I’ll share:
✔️ How to stay consistent even when results aren’t visible yet
✔️ Why most people give up on habits too soon
✔️ The key mindset shift to make habits stick for good

Your habits are like seeds. Keep watering them, and they will grow. 🌱

51. Achieve More: How Online Tools Improve Productivity and Habits, with Kryštof Ekl

How online tools can help to improve productivity and habits? How do we get started without being overwhelmed? What is great about Notion? In this conversation, I’m joined by Kryštof Ekl, productivity coach and Notion Consultant and we explore in which way tools can be helpful and how to use them most efficiently.

Kryštof kicks off the conversation with a systemic view on our productivity looking at the framework, duties and tools. He highlights the role of the tools: helping us to make the steps we need to take to achieve our goals obvious and the tasks we need to do easy.

We continue the conversation with a discussion about how to take the first steps when exploring a new tool and delve deeper into the role of experimenting on our own, using online tutorials or existing templates. The key to use our time efficiently with the tools is to be clear on what we want to achieve and we chat about the difference between learning how to use the tools on our own or using experts and mentors.

Kryštof shares concrete examples and tips when online tools and Notion can help with building new habits (as well being clear about when no online tool will help you!) and we dig deeper into necessary components for behaviour change and the importance of the behaviour prompts.

If you’re ready to improve your productivity and make your life easier, get ready for some real-life tips when it comes to using online tools and specific examples how tools can support you. Ready? Pop in those headphones and let’s dive in!

47. From Hustle to Flow: How to Find the Perfect Work-Life Balance Across Cultures, with Nikki Palazzo

How to create structure, yet allow space for flexibility? How is our productivity and mindset around it affected by the culture we come from? How to figure this out when you have feet in different countries?

We kick off our conversation with Nikki Palazzo, founder of the ExpatCast Podcast and an expat herself, having feet in the US, Germany and Paraguay. Nikki shares how growing up in the US ingrained the “hustle culture” mentality, where her identity was tied to achievements.

Nikki shares how she intentionally decided to leave behind a promising librarian career and moved to Germany for love. This bold move forced her to confront her notions of work and her own value, and suddenly plentiful commodity – free time.

Adapting to 40-hour workweek in Germany and completely different work culture was hard. It involved lots of crying, but the support of fellow Americans in navigating life abroad was essential, eventually leading Nikki to starting her podcast.

Nikki’s journey continued to Paraguay, where she had to adjust to a new, extremely flexible online work schedule and balance it with her natural need for deadlines and structure. We emphasize the need to understand what works for us and find a balance between structure and flexibility that fits our specific context.

Ready to find your perfect balance between structure and flexibility? Get inspired by this conversation and the concrete examples Nikki shares. Pop in those headphones and get inspired!

43. No More Excuses! How to Start Taking Action Today, with Dereck Schenck

Has taking action toward your goals stalled? Are you feeling stuck and unsure how to get started? In this action-packed episode, Derek Schenck, a coach, author and speaker shares powerful strategies how to break through procrastination and turn your dreams into reality.

We kick of the conversation with the question if the action is truly the most important thing when it comes to make your dreams and goals come true. Spoiler Alert: yes, it is! Derek digs deeper into this and talks about the importance of having the goal and the skill set to support the action.

Derek shares the three reasons why one usually does not take the action and we chat about how the mindset, skillset or time management prevents people from working on their goals. We talk about how willpower is not sufficient to take you to the end line – what you need is your “whypower” (and habits).

Derek shares a powerful story of his client whose mission was to support homeless mothers not hitting her goals and how he supported her with his coaching candour to start making sure she helped all the homeless mothers she wanted.

To underscore all our learning in life, we talk about the importance of reflection on our experience and how to review, reflect and reset.

41. How to Actually Find Time for What Matters, with Blessing Allen-Adebayo

Can you have it all? Blessing-Allen Adebayo, an International Development Leader, says yes! Listen to how this busy mom, leader and climate advocate found work-life balance (and stopped crying in the bathroom!).

We start the conversation in the moment a few months after Blessings' twins were born: Blessing crying in the bathroom of her office. This was the moment when she realized that she needs to do something differently to find time for herself, her twins and her husband, while focusing on work and her projects.

We chat about how she started redefining what success means for her in that moment of her life and dive deeper why having our own definition of achievement and success is essential. We talk about the logistics of fitting all the things into our real 24-hour long days.

We delve into the importance of setting goals, managing your time and prioritizing certain things for the time being. Blessing shares her decision to pause with her PhD for the time being when her twins were small, while being able to ask for help. We talk about that nothing lasts forever and that the time we have (or don’t have) also changes.

All of us having feet in different countries, we talk about the extra complexity of living in a different country, or even on different continent. Blessing shares her thoughts on living in Nigeria and UK, wrapping up our conversation by the importance of creating the space for taking care of our planet in our daily lives.
