Podcast Episode Summary: Embracing Change: Talking Through Trauma with Kiawna Brinson Clayton
Topic: The Importance of Self-Care, Caregiving, and Mental Health Post-Covid
In this episode of “Embracing Change: Talking Through Trauma,” host Tami Lysher interviews Kiawna Brinson Clayton, a movement educator, pastor, and trauma-certified professional, who owns a movement studio in Newport News, Virginia. The discussion focuses on the critical need for self-care, especially in the post-Covid world, where mental health issues like anxiety and depression have surged.
Key Themes:
1. Self-Care and Caregiving:
Kiawna and Tami explore the importance of self-care, not just for individuals but also for caregivers—those who are taking care of family members, children with diagnoses like autism or sensory issues, or even their clients, as in the case of movement educators. Kiawna emphasizes that caregiving roles extend beyond the home, including the care movement educators provide in their studios.
2. Post-Covid Mental Health Crisis:
Both Tami and Kiawna reflect on the significant rise in mental health issues since Covid, with many people experiencing heightened anxiety and depression. Caregivers are often on the front lines of managing the well-being of their family members or clients, adding to their own stress and emotional burden.
3. Challenges of Self-Care in Modern Life:
Kiawna notes that while many of her clients come to her studio for an hour of self-care, it’s often the only time they dedicate to themselves. The session dives into how busy lifestyles, particularly for women, often lead to neglecting self-care, and how societal pressures and roles as caregivers contribute to this imbalance.
4. Misconceptions About Self-Care:
Getting a manicure or pedicure, while enjoyable, don’t necessarily provide the deep relaxation and reset our nervous systems need. She stresses the importance of incorporating practices that allow the body and mind to truly unwind, such as breathwork, which she has introduced in group settings.
5. Heightened Stress and Fight-or-Flight Mode:
Kiawna and Tami discuss how many people are stuck in a fight-or-flight response due to external stressors like natural disasters and ongoing crises. This continuous state of stress further emphasizes the need for intentional and restorative self-care practices.
6. Breakdowns and the Importance of Awareness:
While Kiawna hasn’t directly witnessed client breakdowns, she frequently hears stories from clients who reach a breaking point. These stories have made her more aware of the importance of self-care, not just for others but also for herself, as she shares her own experiences of managing stress.
Takeaway:
This episode reminds listeners of the necessity of self-care, especially in times of heightened stress and caregiving responsibilities. Kiawna’s work in movement education highlights the importance of creating space for clients to nurture themselves, while Tami encourages a deeper look into how we can restore our nervous systems and maintain balance in our lives.

In the podcast “Embracing Change: Talking Through Trauma,” host Tami Lysher interviews Kasia Derbyszewska, who has a background in neuroscience and curriculum design, specifically using Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The discussion focuses on how UDL addresses the “predictable variability” of learners and aims to create flexible, adaptive learning environments that consider emotional and cognitive needs. Kasia emphasizes the importance of safety, agency, and belonging in learning environments, and how biases can be mitigated by thoughtful design.
They also explore the integration of nervous system regulation into UDL, noting that feeling safe is fundamental for effective learning. This involves movement, breathwork, and finding joy from within, with techniques like humming and playful activities helping regulate the nervous system. Tami and Kasia stress the importance of designing environments that accommodate all learners, allowing them to authentically express themselves and find their voice and choice.
The conversation also touches on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on movement and learning, and how important it is to incorporate movement into learning environments to foster emotional and cognitive well-being. They conclude by highlighting the variability in needs and approaches to nervous system regulation and the value of incorporating these principles into educational settings.

In this episode with Kelly Etter's story of resilience is impressive to say the least. Listen the the conversation I had with Kelly on her journey to resiliency through the nervous system.
Here is what Kelly had to say:
I also believe movement is healing emotionally/mentally: the combination of working with my Pilates students and returning to dancing played a significant role in my healing from the depression, anxiety and panic attacks I suffered as a result of divorce. Teaching and facilitating are about learning, growing and connecting: assisting others’ learning and growing allows me to be of service. I’ve been told I am easy to be around, have a delightful sense of humor and make exercise enjoyable.

On this episode of Embracing Change Talking Through Trauma with Nick Prefontaine. His story is inspirational.
Nick states, whatever has brought you here today I can let you know that you will make it through to the other side of your trauma. I’m living proof. In 2003 I was in a life threatening snowboard accident that left me in a coma not being able to walk, talk or eat on my own. Less than 3 months later I ran out of the hospital. Unknowingly I utilized a particular system, the S.T.E.P. system.
Still unaware of that system, I developed a voice issue in 2012. Again I went ‘back to the well’ and used the very same system to recover and 8 years later, I didn’t have a voice issue. We’re so fortunate at Common Goal to share that same system with you to help you make it through to the other side of your trauma.
