In this powerful and eye-opening episode, I sit down with Garry Schaedel who recently released his memoir, "Dreams and Mirrors." We discuss his book and explore his journey from the depths of childhood trauma to the triumph of healing and balance. Garry opens up about growing up in a home marked by physical and emotional abuse, his father's alcoholism, and a lack of support for childhood activities like Cub Scouts or sports. He shares deeply personal stories of anger, abuse, and the impact of being ignored by his mother and unsupported by his parents.
We also dive into the concept of Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) and how they contribute to the risk of developing PTSD in both children and adults. Garry also talks about Positive Youth Development and how it enhances a child's development. Garry recounts the moments that led to his diagnosis with PTSD and how therapy became a turning point in resolving his painful past.
