In this episode of The Trainer’s Scoop, I’m joined by Dr. Jennifer Wright-Berryman — Ph.D. in Social Work and Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati — to talk about the connection between mental health and fitness. We explore how physical training can support emotional wellbeing, how cultivating intrinsic motivation can lead to better outcomes, and how to define progress beyond aesthetics or PRs. Dr. Wright-Berryman opens up about her own fitness journey and shares practical strategies for managing mental health — both as an athlete and as a coach guiding others through their own goals.Timestamps: 0:00 - 2:15 - Welcoming Jennifer02:15- 8:00 - Jennifer’s fitness background08:00- 16:00 - Habit Formation 16:00- 20:00 - Establishing your own intrinsic motivation 20:00- 33:00 - Fitness and mental health : Depression and Anxiety 33:00 - 41:00 - What is Progress/Emotional Health 41:00 - 56:00 - Strategies for Improving Mental Health & Fitness????56:00 - 1:04:00 - Importance of Brain Work 1:04:00 - 1:11:57 - Resources & Closing Thank you all so much for watching/listening! Welcome to The Trainer’s Scoop! In Episode 90. I’m rejoined by Jack Quint, who is the perfect guest to address a topic that I see causing a lot of chatter in the fitness industry right now — “are science based training methodologies going too far?”
We’ve seen a major uptick in people that claim to be science based both in the gym and online, and as great as it is to incorporate science into any pursuit, misunderstanding its application can result in some big issues with your progress toward achieving your fitness goals.
So I wanted to answer the, “How do I use science to achieve my goals,” conversation with Jack, who has a Masters Degree in an Exercise Science, making him well versed in interpreting studies, and having conducted research himself. Our goal for the episode was to help you develop the framework that you can use to integrate science into your fitness, without losing the plot

Get ready, this is a good one. I’m joined by Chris Beal in this episode of The Trainer’s Scoop, and if you know Chris, you know he’s a great conversationalist. I knew Chris would be great on the podcast, simply because every conversation I have with seems to be a high level one.
Chris and I broke down his backstory, coming up from tough circumstances in Akron, Ohio, Chris always worked hard, eventually landing a job in medical device sales. But he left a promising career to work with Bryce Calvin to build up Progressive Performance to the awesome coaching company that it is today.
We got into great discussion on making your way through the life’s adversities, the importance of solid friend groups, and broke down Chris’s programming style and top 10 movements for training.

I’m very excited to be welcoming Eric Wu aka Mr. 0RIR to the podcast. Eric is a personal trainer, former college basketball player, and has aspirations to step on stage for a bodybuilding show as well.
I originally got to know Eric through his great Instagram presence where he chronicles his progress and shows his flawless training technique. But more importantly, has the knowledge to back up his gains, so naturally, I had to get him on the podcast to share his wisdom.

I’m very happy to bring back a guest that I ALWAYS have great conversation with. Welcome back to the podcast Shimmy! For those who don’t know Shimmy, he makes phenomenal content revolving around training and nutrition for hypertrophy. Seriously, this is someone you need to be following. He has so many practical pieces of advice in his content and I’ve learned a lot from him, and you will too!
One thing I really respect about Shim is he is truly about the process, he has been refining his approach to fitness for well over a decade and achieved a very impressive physique; interestingly, Shimmy has never expressed direct interest in competing, which in a way makes me respect him even more. He is just about that life.
I hope you enjoy our discussion and have some takeaways from it, I definitely did!
