In 2004, life as we know it changed. Facebook connected us to our besties, family, celebrities, world events, and businesses of many ventures. From there, our world changed even more in 2010 when Instagram was introduced, followed by the launch of Snapchat in 2011.
Filters were introduced to us on Instagram for editing your pictures, but it wasn't until Snapchat when we were able to live in the moment, filter ourselves. Something so seemingly harmless had significantly impacted mental health, especially in young teens, especially when they introduced hundreds of beauty filters. These filters can change our face shape, decrease our pores, slim our faces, eye colour, thicken our lips and give us that overall celebrity look.
So, how to we help protect our children and ourselves from mental health-related struggles in the future?

In this episode, Gord Mclean courageously speaks out about his journey with mental health, specifically with depression, anxiety, and male Borderline Personality Disorder traits. He speaks about tending to take on the role of the caregiver, always putting himself last and struggling to be accepted by others and himself, which has led to the breakdown of many relationships in his life. While Gord notes that he was not officially diagnosed, this episode does focus on the traits he identifies as part of this disorder.
Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD is characterized by an ongoing pattern of varying moods, self-image, and behaviour, often driven by a person’s absolute fear of abandonment. People with BPD may experience intense episodes of anger, depression, and anxiety that negatively impact their relationships and can lead to suicidal thoughts and attempts.
