#29: Mastering the Movements: Weightlifting, Gymnastics & Mono-structural in CrossFit vs. StreetParking

Welcome back to the Coffee + SpWolfPack Podcast! This week, we’re diving into the heart of what makes both CrossFit and StreetParking so effective: the movements themselves. In this episode, we’re breaking down three fundamental categories—Weightlifting, Gymnastics, and Mono-structural—and exploring how each program incorporates these elements to help you build strength, endurance, and control.

Join us as we compare the heavy lifts like the Clean & Jerk, Snatch, and Squats that you’ll find in CrossFit with the more accessible and adaptable options in StreetParking, such as dumbbell, kettlebell, and sandbag variations. We’ll also talk through key Gymnastics movements like pull-ups, muscle-ups, and handstand push-ups, showing how StreetParking offers scaled options to meet you where you’re at, while CrossFit might push you to develop more advanced skills. Finally, we’ll look at Mono-structural work, from running and rowing to creative StreetParking alternatives like weighted step-ups and sandbag tosses, ensuring that you’re always improving your cardio, regardless of your setup.

But that’s not all! We’re also giving you a look at next week’s StreetParking programming. We’ll discuss the movements coming up, how they tie into the pillars of fitness, and offer strategies to help you make the most of each workout—whether you're in the garage gym, working out at the park, or tackling the WOD at home.

So if you’re ready to dive deeper into your training, understand the why behind the workouts, and get a head start on next week’s programming, this episode is for you! Grab your coffee, lace up those shoes, and let’s get to work!

#28: CrossFit vs. StreetParking – Unpacking the Programming & Community Connection with Mindy and Leslie

In Episode 28 of the Coffee + SpWolfPack Podcast, we take a deep dive into the evolving conversation around two of the most popular fitness methodologies: CrossFit and StreetParking. Joining me are Mindy and Leslie, who help break down the philosophies, community dynamics, and programming structures that set these two systems apart.

We kick things off by examining the core programming philosophies—CrossFit's "constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity" versus StreetParking’s structured, real-life approach with a focus on energy systems. Together, we explore whether StreetParking's more deliberate programming leads to predictable results and how CrossFit’s randomness prepares athletes for the unknown.

From there, we shift to a detailed comparison of recent CrossFit.com workouts and StreetParking's programming, evaluating what fits, what doesn’t, and why. Leslie joins me to walk through next week’s StreetParking workouts, adding her own thoughts as she gears up for an upcoming race, complete with new poles for her tapering phase.

Mindy also brings a fresh perspective to the ongoing debate about CrossFit, specifically addressing how some people struggle to separate the methodology from the sport. Her insights will challenge you to rethink how we talk about both approaches to fitness and their impact on everyday athletes.

Whether you’re a loyal StreetParking member, a CrossFit enthusiast, or someone curious about the distinctions between these two powerful fitness communities, this episode has something for everyone. Listen in for a lively discussion on programming, recovery, accessibility, and how both platforms foster community in their own unique ways. Don’t miss out—hit play and join the conversation today!

#27: Bouncing Back: Overcoming Workout Slumps & Mental Hurdles with Stephen & Julie

In this episode of Coffee + SpWolfPack with Stephen & Julie, we tackle one of the most common struggles in fitness: hitting a workout slump. Whether it’s from missing a few days, feeling mentally drained, or pushing through a series of rough workouts, we’ve all been there. And, as Stephen says, much like Thanos declared in Avengers, “I am inevitable.” Slumps are just part of the journey—they will happen. But the good news? Overcoming them is absolutely within your control.

We kick things off by recognizing the telltale signs of a slump, which often creep in through life stress, mental burnout, or physical fatigue. Whether you’re avoiding the gym, feeling disconnected, or battling negative self-talk, knowing what’s happening is the first step to turning it around. Stephen shares his personal strategy for slumps: when he feels one coming on, he doesn’t force himself into intense workouts but instead chooses something that looks fun. He scrolls through old Street Parking workouts, starring the ones that spark joy for those inevitable low-energy days. For him, it’s often about finding workouts with movements like running, cleans, and pullups—ones he can cruise through without feeling overwhelmed.

On the flip side, we dive into the deeper mental challenges that come with a slump. Julie offers wisdom on practicing self-compassion and the importance of starting where you are—not where you were. By setting realistic goals and lowering the bar, you give yourself room to get back into the rhythm without unnecessary pressure. The key is to start small, focusing on just getting moving and building momentum over time.

We also discuss how slumps can affect more than just your workouts. Stephen admits that his diet tends to slip when he’s in a rut, often leading to unintentional calorie deficits. On the other hand, I open up about how I emotionally eat during slumps, gravitating towards comfort food to cope. These patterns can derail progress further, so it's crucial to be aware of how different people experience and respond to these challenging periods.

Lastly, we talk about the power of community. Re-engaging with your accountability group, whether it’s a local gym or an online space like Street Parking, can make a massive difference in helping you come back stronger. Reaching out doesn’t just reduce the feelings of shame or isolation that slumps often bring—it also reminds you that you’re not alone. Your community is ready to support you, and getting comfortable leaning on others is a powerful step in bouncing back.

Closing Thoughts:
No matter how long you’ve been off track or how deep the slump feels, remember: setbacks are temporary, and every effort to come back is a victory. Recognize the slump, respond with self-compassion, and re-engage with the support around you. You’ve got this.

Call to Action:
Have you hit a workout slump recently? Share your story with us or connect with someone in your community for support. Let’s all keep each other moving forward—together!

#26: Embrace the Challenge: SIS-TEMBER & The Sisyphus Gauntlet with Julie, Justin, & Leslie

Welcome to Episode 26 of the Coffee + Spwolfpack podcast! This week, Julie, Justin, Leslie, and I come together to unpack the excitement and challenges ahead as we gear up for SIS-TEMBER and the Sisyphus Gauntlet, a unique challenge for Streetparkers designed to push us both physically and mentally throughout September.

Drawing inspiration from the Myth of Sisyphus, we dive into the concept of relentless effort in the face of setbacks—a theme that resonates deeply with Julie's personal journey this year. She shares candidly about her highs and lows, the moments of progress followed by unexpected obstacles, and how this mirrors the endless struggle of Sisyphus pushing his boulder uphill, only to see it roll back down. But as Julie reminds us, it's in these moments of falling and rising again where real growth happens.

Leslie also gives us a glimpse into her intense final month of preparation for her ambitious goal: completing 3 marathons in 3 days on challenging trails, all without the support of cheerleaders along the way. Her dedication is a powerful reminder of the importance of staying committed, even when the road is tough and the finish line feels distant.

In this episode, we also explore how to approach the workouts without "gaming" them—finding the balance between pushing our limits and staying true to the intent of each session. We discuss how life can be both a distraction and an excuse, and the critical difference between the two when it comes to maintaining consistency. When you hit a breaking point during "The Carry," how quickly do you pick it back up? What does it take to stay on course, even when no one is watching?

Whether you're someone who thrives on the energy of others or prefers to tackle challenges solo, we talk about the power of journaling immediately after each workout to capture the raw emotions and insights that surface. This practice can be a game-changer in staying connected to your goals and tracking your progress.

Join us as we gear up for a month of transformation, commitment, and relentless pursuit of growth. Whether you're ready to take on the Sisyphus Gauntlet or simply looking for inspiration to keep moving forward, this episode offers a wealth of insights and motivation to help you stay on track, no matter what life throws your way. Get ready to embrace the challenge—because September is SIS-TEMBER, and it's time to see what you're truly capable of!
