Gunnar Kaiser ist der Meinung, je mehr sich der Staat einmischen darf, desto größer ist der Schaden für alle Beteiligten. Der Staat könne nie so flexibel, nie so gerecht sein, wie der Markt und seine Individuen.
Anselm Lenz hingegen vertritt die Auffassung, dass derjenige, der alles dem Markt überlässt, vor allem Superreiche und Großgrundbesitzer in die Lage versetzt, ihre Marktmacht zu missbrauchen. Hier könne nur ein früh eingreifender Staat kapitalistische Exzesse verhindern. Lenz spricht sich für das sogenannte „menschliche Maß“ aus.
Die Frage, die beide Kontrahenten beschäftigt: Wo verläuft die Grenze für individuellen Besitz? Muss es, um das Individuum zu schützen, eine Obergrenze für Reichtum geben, die der Staat regelt? Oder aber wäre ein solch mächtiger Staat schlichtweg übergriffig und im Hinblick auf die Freiheit des Individuums eine große Gefahr für unsere Gesellschaft?
