The Running Man, Cloud and Perth Festival Film Preview (Movie Squad Podcast #512)

The internet’s not big enough for this episode of the Movie Squad podcast, but we’re uploading it anyway!

Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo join Brekky host Pam Boland to talk a brand new blockbuster (as well as the career prospects of Glen Powell) and the most exciting films playing the Japanese Film Festival, before chatting with Perth Festival‘s Film Curator Madeline Bates ahead of her new season.

First up, it’s all about The Running Man, which sees Edgar Wright rebooting/remaking the Stephen King novel previously adapted into a brawny Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. This time around, it’s Glen Powell playing the dystopian death-sport set in the horrifying near-future of (checks notes) 2025!

Then, it’s a deep dive into the Kiyoshi Kurosawa flicks playing the Japanese Film Festival, including The Serpent’s Path, Chime and especially Cloud, the latter of which is about a predatory internet reseller who becomes prey to an online community of people he’s wronged (for reasons big and petty). Check out the screening details for the Japanese Film Festival here, including Tristan’s talk about Chime on Sunday 23 November.

Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat with Madeline Bates, the Film Curator at Perth Festival, all about the most exciting titles set to premiere at the Somerville Auditorium over the next few months, including It Was Just An Accident, Sirât, The Voice of Hind Rajab, Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, and the Perth-made Birthright. You can take a look at the full program here, ahead of the first film’s debut on 24 November: Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague.

Die My Love, Dragonfly and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (Movie Squad Podcast #511)

This is one mother of a Movie Squad episode.

Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo once again join Brekky host Pam Boland to tell her about what’s playing in cinemas (this week, it’s films with a maternal edge). But first, Pam shares her thoughts on the Marlon Williams documentary Two Worlds – Ngā Ao E Rua.

Then, Tristan reviews Die My Love, an explosive drama about postpartum depression that sees Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson team up with director Lynne Ramsay.

Simon follows that up with a review of the dread-inducing Dragonfly, part of the 2025 British Film Festival, which stars Brenda Blethyn as an elderly woman being cared for by her odd duck of a neighbour, played by Andrea Riseborough.

Stay tuned for Tristan’s pod-exclusive review of the extremely stressful comedic drama If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, starring Rose Byrne as a mother on the brink and Conan O’Brien as her uncaring therapist. It opens in Australian cinemas next week.

Bugonia and Familiar Touch (Movie Squad Podcast #511)

They walk among us, and by ‘they’ we of course mean Movie Squad co-hosts Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo.

After a week apart, Tristan and Simon reunite with Brekky host Pam Boland for two new reviews!

First up, Tristan reviews Bugonia, the latest collaborative freak-out between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, also starring Jesse Plemons as a conspiracy theorist who kidnaps Stone’s high-powered CEO after suspecting she’s actually an alien.

Then, Simon reviews Sarah Friedland’s delicate and dance-like coming of (old) age movie, Familiar Touch, starring Kathleen Chalfant as an octogenarian woman adjusting to the new routines and rhythms of an elder care facility.

Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat about Tristan’s Spooktober challenge, and some of the best and scariest movies the Squad watched in the lead-up to Halloween.

Frankenstein, Shelby Oaks and Regretting You (Movie Squad Podcast #510)

It’s spooky season on Movie Squad, and not just because two of the regular presenters have mysteriously gone missing!

With Tristan Fidler behind the desk serving Breakfast, he’s joined by Laura Blundell and Lucy Rutherford to review three new cinema releases.

First up, Lucy takes a look at Guillermo del Toro’s gothic Frankenstein, starring Oscar Isaac as the good doctor and Jacob Elordi as his unholy creation. It’s now in cinemas before heading to Netflix.

Then, Laura reviews the supernatural mystery Shelby Oaks, about a woman seeking her long-lost sister amid suspicious, maybe demonic circumstances. It’s also now showing in Australian cinemas.

Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive review of the latest Colleen Hoover adaptation, Regretting You, starring Allison Williams, Dave Franco and Mckenna Grace.

Movie Squad
After the Hunt, Twinless and Patrick Marlborough on Nock Loose’s Film Influences (Movie Squad Podcast #509)

Provocative! Outrageous! Shocking! Melodramatic! Twisted! It’s only another episode of the Movie Squad podcast.

This week, Tristan Fidler reviews Luca Guadagnino’s all-star drama After the Hunt, in which Julia Roberts’ college professor is torn between a promising student (Ayo Edibiri) and the colleague (Andrew Garfield) she accuses of crossing the line.

Then, Simon Miraudo leads a review of James Sweeney’s tonally-surprising and somewhat sinister dramedy Twinless, starring Dylan O’Brien as a man grieving the death of his identical brother, and who meets a kindred spirit (played by Sweeney) at a twinless support group.

Both films are in cinemas (Twinless arrives October 23).

First up, however, in a rare non-twisted segment, Breakfast host Pamela Boland and the Blockbuster Babes pay tribute to the late, great Diane Keaton.

But then stay tuned through to the end for a pod-exclusive chat, as Tristan and Simon interview WA author Patrick Marlborough about the strange stew of films that influenced his comic revenge novel Nock Loose. (Listen to Patrick’s last chat with Pam here.)

A House of Dynamite and Roofman (Movie Squad Podcast #508)

In this thrilling, action-packed, muscular episode of the Movie Squad podcast, the films are reviewed, the conversation is crackling and the studio chairs are malfunctioning!

First up, Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler grip the microphones for a white-knuckle discussion of Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, imagining how a nuclear strike on US soil would play out if Idris Elba was the current President.

It’s now showing in cinemas before heading to streaming services later this year.

Then, Tristan sneaks in a week early to review Roofman, much like its sneaky, roof-dwelling criminal played by Channing Tatum would do in real life!

Plus, Breakfast host Pamela Boland shares her thoughts on the latest trailers for Frankenstein and The Moment.

Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat where Simon and Tristan dig a little deeper into A House of Dynamite and other movies that imagine a nuclear winter.

It’s now showing in cinemas.

One Battle After Another and Swiped (Movie Squad Podcast #506)

The revolution will be podcasted!

On the latest Movie Squad instalment, it’s one review after another—literally—when Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo join Brekky host Pam Boland.

First up, the Blockbuster Babes give it up to ‘the master’ and take a look at Paul Thomas Anderson’s biggest ever movie, the timely, provocative and highly paranoid Leonardo DiCaprio chase movie One Battle After Another. Is it one of the year’s best movies? Is it one of PTA’s best movies? It’s now showing in cinemas.

Then, Tristan lets us know whether we should swipe right or left on the straight-to-streaming new Tinder/Bumble biopic Swiped, starring Lily James as co-founder Whitney Wolfe Herd. It’s available to stream on Disney+.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Highest 2 Lowest and The Bad Guys 2 (Movie Squad Podcast #505)

Every week, the Movie Squad assemble to review the latest in cinema on Breakfast with Pam Boland, usually offering a sweet bonus for the podcast listeners.

This episode is no exception, as Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo take on two newies from auteurs Kogonada and Spike Lee, as well as a brand new animated film.

First up, Tristan takes a look at Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which sees starcrossed Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie embarking on a large, brave, attractive adventure. But does the earnestness of its trailer match Kogonada’s elegiac aesthetic?

Then, Simon leads a review of the latest Spike Lee joint, and his fifth collaboration with Denzel Washington, Highest 2 Lowest, inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s kidnapping-and-class drama High and Low. Does transplanting the story to New York elevate the material?

Stay tuned for an extended pod-exclusive chat about Highest 2 Lowest, plus Simon’s review of The Bad Guys 2, and the benefits of children ‘microdosing peril’ in theatres.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and The Bad Guys 2 are now in Australian cinemas. Highest 2 Lowest is available to stream on Apple TV+.

Splitsville, Lesbian Space Princess and The Long Walk (Movie Squad Podcast #504)

Radio’s favourite situationship, aka Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo, are back with two comedies about modern love… and then a bonus movie about people being killed while taking a long walk.

Joining Pam Boland on Brekky, Tristan leads a review of the side-splitting, slapstick farce Splitsville, featuring writer-director Michael Angelo Covino, co-writer Kyle Marvin and producers Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona as romantically entangled couples.

Then, Simon leads a review of the rare ‘quadruple-A’ feature Lesbian Space Princess (it’s Animated, it’s for Adults, it’s Australian and it was more specifically made in Adelaide). It’s a sweet and very raunchy adventure about, well, a lesbian space princess, with comedy royalty rounding out the voice cast.

Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat about the latest Stephen King adaptation (his third this year!) The Long Walk, with Tristan and Simon debating what even makes a Stephen King adaptation any good.

All of these films are now showing in Australian cinemas.

Sorry Baby, Caught Stealing and Fight or Flight (Movie Squad Podcast #503)

This week on the Movie Squad pod, Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo look at two movies that each save the cat… and that’s where the similarities end.

First up, Simon leads a review of Sorry, Baby, the darkly funny directorial debut of writer and star Eva Victor, about a young English professor reckoning with ‘the terrible thing’ that happened to them.

Then, Tristan looks at Darren Aronofsky’s rollicking thriller Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Matt Smith and more. And yes, just like Sorry, Baby, it has a cat co-star.

Would it shock you to learn that Brekky host Pam Boland reveals during this episode that she has not yet read Blake Snyder’s iconic screenwriting book ‘Save the Cat’? Would it shock you even more that she’s actually keen to watch both these movies?

Listen back to find out why!

Then, stay tuned for a pod-exclusive review of Josh Hartnett’s Fight or Flight, in which he plays a hapless former secret service agent who has to protect a hacker on a plane full of assassins.

All of these films are now showing in Australian cinemas.

It’s time to give the people want they want: reviews!

After three weeks of festivities (Brekky live with Pam Boland at Local & Aesthetic, Movie Squad’s 500th Live at Luna spectacular, and the ‘Hot Takes’ Radiothon special), the Blockbuster Babes are back in the studio with a backlog of movies to cover.

First up, Tristan Fidler reviews Ari Aster’s latest divisive effort, Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal as competing, COVID-era mayoral candidates.

Then, Simon Miraudo leads a discussion of The Ballad of Wallis Island, an ‘ambient comedy’ about a wealthy, Welsh-island-dwelling eccentric (Tim Key) who reunites his favourite singers (played by Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan) for a private concert.

And then, in an EXPLOSIVE pod-exclusive chat, Tristan and Simon review the very silly legacy-quel The Naked Gun, which sees Liam Neeson step into the shoes of Leslie Nielsen, and Relay, a tense espionage thriller starring Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington.

All of these are now showing in Australian cinemas!

PLUS, one extra Hot Take submitted by a subscriber: Which films have Simon and Tristan butted heads over the most?

Movie Squad’s 500th Episode Live at Luna! (Movie Squad Podcast #500)

They’re calling it the cultural event of the century. It’s been described as a cross between Oasis at Knebworth ’96 and an episode of Crossing Over with John Edward. Apparently, you had to be there. And now you can be.

To celebrate the 500th Movie Squad podcast featuring Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo, the Blockbuster Babes took over Cinema 5 at Luna Palace Cinemas Leederville on Thursday 7 August with 5,000 of their closest friends for the biggest Movie Squad spectacular ever.

FEATURING

Mark Neal: The godfather of local indie music and Odlaw frontman spent a whole year watching Nic Cage movies. Listen in as Mark is quizzed about his Year in The Cage.

AND

Zoe Pepper: This Perth-born filmmaker is causing a buzz with her upcoming flick BIRTHRIGHT. As the festival circuit beckons, Simon and Tristan help her get Red Carpet Ready.

WITH

Ange Tuffnell: The Bribes and Sooks songstress is not your typical punk. Snap your fingers to her Letterboxd Limericks and see if you can Beat the Babes in Ange’s jaunty guessing game.

AND INTRODUCING

Mia Quartermaine as DJ Sliding Doors: Boorloo’s best (only?) film critic/DJ, and our bandleader for the evening!

If you love Movie Squad and want 500 more episodes, make sure you support RTRFM and subscribe or donate this (and every) Radiothon! Movie Squad Live at Luna proves RTRFM is definitely More Than Radio.

Special thanks to Eddie Curtis for mixing. With appreciation for our wonderful guests Mark Neal, Zoe Pepper, Ange Tuffnell and DJ Sliding Doors. And huge love to Luna Palace Cinemas, supporters of Movie Squad, and Umbrella Entertainment for the giveaways.
