The internet’s not big enough for this episode of the Movie Squad podcast, but we’re uploading it anyway!
Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo join Brekky host Pam Boland to talk a brand new blockbuster (as well as the career prospects of Glen Powell) and the most exciting films playing the Japanese Film Festival, before chatting with Perth Festival‘s Film Curator Madeline Bates ahead of her new season.
First up, it’s all about The Running Man, which sees Edgar Wright rebooting/remaking the Stephen King novel previously adapted into a brawny Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. This time around, it’s Glen Powell playing the dystopian death-sport set in the horrifying near-future of (checks notes) 2025!
Then, it’s a deep dive into the Kiyoshi Kurosawa flicks playing the Japanese Film Festival, including The Serpent’s Path, Chime and especially Cloud, the latter of which is about a predatory internet reseller who becomes prey to an online community of people he’s wronged (for reasons big and petty). Check out the screening details for the Japanese Film Festival here, including Tristan’s talk about Chime on Sunday 23 November.
Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat with Madeline Bates, the Film Curator at Perth Festival, all about the most exciting titles set to premiere at the Somerville Auditorium over the next few months, including It Was Just An Accident, Sirât, The Voice of Hind Rajab, Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, and the Perth-made Birthright. You can take a look at the full program here, ahead of the first film’s debut on 24 November: Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague.
Be sure to tune in to RTRFM every Friday at 7:30am to hear Movie Squad live on Breakfast with Pam!
And find out more about Tristan’s Trash Classics screenings at Luna Cinemas on the last Friday of every month here.
