There is an abundance of information on creating a great life for those in their 20s, 30s, and even 40s, but truly little for those 50 and beyond. The media seems to think we should either be chasing our past glory days by clinging to youth with a white knuckle death grip OR just quietly fading into the background and letting life pass by. Yet, this time of life brings an amazing opportunity to combine our wisdom and experience with our passion and enthusiasm and refine, redefine, and reinvent who we want to be and how we want to live. Let’s get started!

Simplifying Skin Care in Midlife (with Dr. Mina)
Dr. Mina is a Harvard trained dermatologist and host of The Skin Real podcast is on a mission to provide people with real skin care information and advice. In this episode she discusses misconceptions and ways to simplify skin care, the three products we should all be using, skin changes as we age, and even shares a bit about how men’s skin care is different.
I am guilty of not putting much thought into skin care so this was a fun and valuable conversation for me. I really appreciate her message that skin care doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t have to be super expensive.
You can find out more and connect with her at www.theskinreal.com

Building a Pre-Retirement Flight Plan in Your Fifties (with Bill and Pete Bush)
Most retirement conversations seem to hinge around dollars and dates – how much do you have and when will you retire. Bill and Pete Bush are financial planners who approach the conversation a bit differently and share how our 50s are the time to really be thinking through what we want our retirement to look like, what will we be doing, how will we be contributing to our lives and the world, and the importance of planning our health, not just our wealth for retirement. I really enjoyed their perspective on thinking about retirement and they were just great fun to talk to.
Along with running Horizon Financial Group, they are authors of The Runway Decade: Building a Pre-Retirement Flight Plan in Your Fifties and hosts of The Runway Decade Podcast. You can find more about them along with tools and other planning resources at: https://www.horizonfg.com/

Alison Jacobson hosts the podcast “Midlife Mavericks,” coaches midlife women, and is author of the book “Daily Inspiration for Midlife Women: A Guide to Peace, Joy, Confidence, and Abundance.”
I am very excited to have Alison as a guest as we share a similar view of the power of midlife. In this conversation, we discuss:

* Getting past self-doubt.
* Taking on new challenges, like when she ran her first marathon at 58.
* Living confidentially.
* Reconnecting with who we used to be.
* Approaching new things with a sense of wonder and vulnerability.
* Fear of not being enough.
* Courage to live an imperfect life.

Alison’s expertise is with women, but everything discussed applies to men, too. You can learn more about her at www.alison-jacobson.com.

Retiring Better (with Joe Allaria)
This episode is about retirement, but not really about saving or investing. Rather, Joe Allaria, CFP and host of The Retirement Power Hour Podcast, joins me to discuss thinking about the lifestyle of retirement and creating a fulfilling retirement. Sure, the numbers are important, but if the average retirement is almost two decades, it’s just as important to be thinking about quality of life.
He also discusses some of the myths of retirement, the different levels of retirement (it’s not all or nothing), and what we could all be doing now to prepare.
I really enjoyed Joe’s perspective as it inspired me to think about retirement differently than I ever had before. You can hear more of Joe’s thoughts on his podcast at: https://www.retirementpowerhourpodcast.com/ or learn more about him at his company’s website: https://carsonallaria.com/our-team/joe-allaria/

Joyfully Married (with Theresa DeWit)
Theresa DeWit has a huge vision: to make a difference in one million marriages. Like many visions, it started out smaller. She just wanted to pass some marriage advice on to her 20-something kids. That advice has grown into a best-selling book, an online course, and relationship coaching.
Theresa shares some of her insights and strategies to improve midlife marriages. I appreciated the simplicity and practicality of her approach: being intentional, creating joy, and understanding your partner’s needs. She also discussed where she sees people getting in their own way in their relationships.
Our relationships are a key part of midlife and Theresa shares simple but important ways to create joyful marriages.

Fitness Transformation After 50 (with Martin Bolduc)
I can’t be the only one who’s noticed health and fitness takes a lot more intentionality and conscious effort than it did in my 30s, or even my 40s. Things take longer, I bounce back slower, and life catches up quicker. I suspect many of us in our 50s and 60s find ourselves wanting to get back into shape, wanting to get back that physical vibrancy we had before. If that’s you, today’s guest has you covered. Martin Bolduc is a body transformation coach who works with men 50 and older to, as he puts it, “get their swag back.” But, even though is focus is on helping men, he shares great information that applies to everyone.
One of the things I appreciate is his approach is measured, realistic, and focused on health first and fitness second. He discusses:

* His own battle with cancer and bouncing back to win a body transformation contest.
* The importance of having a clear vision of who you want to be.
* Why focusing on daily action is more important than focusing on weight loss.
* The compound effect of commitment, consistency, and common sense.
* Where men often tend to get in their own way when starting a new fitness program.

There is no quick fix, crash diet, workout insanity here. The focus is on sustainable daily action. As Martin says, “Routine is not sexy, but routine will make you sexy.”

Wake-Up, Shake-Up, Thrive! (with Ellen Kocher and Dominique Ben Dhaou)
I LOVED this conversation with Ellen Kocher and Dominique Ben Dhaou. As the co-authors of the book Wake-Up, Shake-Up, Thrive!: How to Lift Up Your Life in Your 50’s and Beyond, they brought tons of information and inspiration on creating and embracing a vibrant life after 50, with a particular focus on work and careers.
We discussed:

* How ageing is regarded in different countries, both personally and in the workplace.
* Myths and stereotypes about ageing and careers.
* The personal and professional advantages that come with growing older.
* Getting beyond being set in our emotions.
* Growing older vs getting old.
* How views of retirement are changing.
* Rethinking careers after 50.

You can connect with Ellen and Dominique at their website: WakeUpShakeUpThrive.com or on Instagram: @WakeUpShakeUpThrive.

Experimenting with Replacing Goals with Habits
Happy New Year!
No guest this episode. I wanted to share some thoughts I’ve been having about replacing my annual goals with a focus on developing really small habits. I have been creating annual goals for the past 20 years and I like the direction they provide, but I’ve noticed I’m sometimes not so good at translating goals into actions. Sometimes it’s overwhelmingly big, sometimes I don’t know where to start, and sometimes I just don’t find the goal motivating. So what if I focus on creating habits instead?
Give it a listen and let me know your thoughts.

Midlife in Beast Mode (with Gail Gensler)
She’s back! Gail Gensler returns for another episode and brings her non-stop full throttle enthusiasm for (mid)life with her. She points out that everyone is, will be, or was in midlife, so why do we spend so little time discussing it?
We talk about:

* How to get started creating a fitness lifestyle.
* Why we should retire the word “senior”.
* Why don’t businesses cater to midlifers even though we’re the ones with the money to spend and time to enjoy it? (a huge pet peeve of mine)
* Discovering new competencies and deciding what she wants to be when she grows up.
* A massive goal she achieved since our last conversation.
* Always saying “yes” to possibilities.

Riders of a Certain Age (with Fran Severn)
Midlife is a fantastic time to take on new hobbies or to return to those that really interested us when we were younger. In midlife, we typically have a bit more time, money, opportunities, and resources than we did in our 20s or 30s, and a bit more wisdom as well.
Riding horses is one of those passions that often gets set aside for other things early in life. But what if you could pursue it now that you’re in midlife? Where would you even begin?
Fran Severn has created a website (www.ridersofacertainage.com) and book, both called “Riders of a Certain Age: Your Guide for Loving Horses Midlife and Beyond” which is focused on helping navigate starting out with horses in midlife.
Although Fran’s expertise is the horse world, much of what we discuss also applies to taking on any new hobby later in life, including:

* Overcoming the fear of being a beginner and becoming comfortable and confident
* The benefits of community
* Myths of riding when you’re older
* Ways to minimize costs while deciding if you really want to pursue it or not
* Different levels of expense and involvement

Normalizing Aging (with Jacqueline “Jack” Perez)
Jacqueline (Jack) Perez is on a mission to normalize aging. In 2017, she created Kuel Life, a website providing community and expert advice for midlife women. Along with curated content and real-life expert advice, the site also showcases women-driven brands.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of community and dangers of isolation, outdated beliefs and stereotypes about aging, the importance of normalizing aging, and what she most enjoys about midlife.
Jack and I share similar experiences and dismay about how midlife is thought about and started our respective ventures for similar reasons. So, no surprise I’m excited to share this episode with you.
Before we get started, I want to call out two previous episodes.
Gail Gensler is one of the experts on Kuel Life and was a guest on Midlife Mastery to discuss defying midlife stereotypes. Gail is in her early 60s and living in full-on beast mode with the energy, enthusiasm, and love for life of someone less than half her age. Just try to keep up with her.
Also, if you didn’t catch the previous episode with Anita and Dario from O’Live Your Life discussing their approach to living an intentional, connected, and full life with a Mediterranean Lifestyle, I highly recommend checking it out.

Merle Saferstein spent much of her career helping Holocaust survivors share their life stories. From that experience she began writing, speaking, and teaching to help others live their legacy. In this episode, we discuss: those pivotal moments that change our lives, aligning your life behind how you want to be remembered, and creating an ethical will. However, what stands out most for me is the idea that legacy is how we live, not what we leave behind. How we are remembered tomorrow is based on how we approach our life today.

Recording My First Record (with Terry Sweet)
Where are you downplaying your strengths and experience? How could you put them to use to create a new career opportunity? Have you ever thought about starting a side business, moving into a new job or career, or completing a bucket list item such as writing a book?
By the time we get to midlife, we often have far more skills, resources, and connections than we realize. We’re often told that it’s a young person’s world, but that overlooks the huge advantages available in midlife.
Today’s guest is Terry Sweet and, although he has created music for advertisements for the past 50 years and played in various bands along the way, he’d never recorded and released an album of his own music. The pandemic created a downturn in the advertising business that gave him the opportunity to write and record.
But just because he had the skills and time, that doesn’t mean it was easy. Terry shares a bit about his inspiration, what it means to “be a freight train” and staying focused, and taking on the Doubt Monster.
Be sure to listen all the way to the end to hear his song, “Skimpy Bikinis and Vodka Martinis” from the album “Listen to the Bars”.

My Dog Saved My Life (with Jeff Goodrich)
How do you transform your life? How do you go from midlife malaise to being exited about who you are and who you’re becoming?
Jeff Goodrich did it by adopting his dog, Duder. At least, that was the start. With Duder’s help, Jeff lost 70 pounds, went from the couch to completing ultramarathons, and became a writer. Along the way, he learned several lessons from Duder, began to change his mindset and remove the limits he’d placed on himself, make continual improvements using the 3 M’s, and now feel like he’s just getting started with a life he loves.
Ready to transform? Let’s get started!

Midlife Mastery
As Seen On YouTube (with Tad Stahl)
Tad Stahl describes himself as “just a middle-class dude raising a family in Indiana.” That’s true, but leaves out a bit. In his mid-fifties, he took on a new challenge by following his adult sons into racing go karts. What started as a weekend hobby with his sons has grown into a family event, all documented on their regular YouTube Vlog.
I’ve been wanting to have Tad on the show for a while now to talk about those three things: taking on new (and humbling) challenges later in life, keeping family relationships front and center even as all kids are now adults themselves and setting off on their own lives, and becoming YouTube famous, at least in his corner of YouTube. Any one of those things is challenging, yet he’s managed to bring them all together in a very authentic and seemingly effortless way of a “middle-class dude raising a family.”
Ready to play bigger in midlife? Tad’s got some good ideas for it, so let’s get started!

Midlife Mastery
There is an abundance of information on creating a great life for those in their 20s, 30s, and even 40s, but truly little for those 50 and beyond. The media seems to think we should either be chasing our past glory days by clinging to youth with a white knuckle death grip OR just quietly fading into the background and letting life pass by. Yet, this time of life brings an amazing opportunity to combine our wisdom and experience with our passion and enthusiasm and refine, redefine, and reinvent who we want to be and how we want to live. Let’s get started!
