11월은 가을을 가장 깊게 느낄 수 있지만, 곧 겨울의 찬 기운이 더해지는 달이죠.
올해가 가기 전에 꼭 하고 싶은 일이나, 전하고 싶은 말이 있다면 실천하기 참 좋은 시간인 것 같습니다.
오늘은 한국어의 소리를 느낄 수 있는 단어들, 의성어와 의태어를 배워볼게요.
이런 단어들은 한국어를 훨씬 생생하게 만들어줘요.

→ The water’s bubbling / boiling.
It’s that happy sound when water starts to boil — bogeul bogeul!
🥩 고기가 지글지글 구워져요.
→ The meat’s sizzling on the pan.
You can almost hear the oil popping — jigeul jigeul!
💧 비가 주룩주룩 내려요.
→ It’s pouring outside.
The rain keeps falling — jurook jurook, steady and strong.
🌟 별이 반짝반짝 빛나요.
→ The stars are twinkling.
Soft, gentle, sparkly light — banjjak banjjak, twinkle twinkle.
🐾 고양이가 살금살금 걸어요.
→ The cat’s tiptoeing quietly.
Quiet steps, slow and sneaky — salgeum salgeum.
😴 아기가 깜박깜박 졸아요.
→ The baby keeps dozing off.
Eyes opening, closing, sleepy rhythm — kkambak kkambak.
보글보글 (bubbling, boiling)
지글지글 (sizzling)
주룩주룩 (pouring)
반짝반짝 (twinkling)
살금살금 (tiptoeing)
깜박깜박 (blinking, dozing off)
They don’t just describe a sound — they capture it.
You can almost hear it when you say them.
So next time you speak Korean, try adding one of these.

→ One of my favorite Korean dishes is bibimbap.

3️⃣ “겨우” — barely / finally / with difficulty

→ I finally finished all that homework.
너 이번 달 월세도 겨우 내지 않았어?
→ Didn’t you just barely make rent this month?
시험이 너무 어려워서 어찌어찌 겨우 합격했네요.
→ The test was so hard — I barely passed.
4️⃣ “아슬아슬하다” — a close call / just barely
후반전에 골 넣는 장면 정말 아슬아슬했지?
→ That goal in the second half was so close!
출근길에 차가 막혀서 아슬아슬하게 도착했어.
→ I got to work just in time — traffic was crazy!
아슬아슬했지만, 잘 이겼다!
→ That was a close one, but we won!
나 기말고사 아슬아슬하게 통과했어! / 나 기말고사 간신히 통과했어!
→ I passed the final exam by the skin of my teeth!
5️⃣ “–해야 하는데” — I should…, but…
보고서 써야 하는데, 몇십 분째 TV만 보고 있어.
→ I should be writing my report, but I’ve been glued to the TV for a while.
일찍 자야 하는데, 핸드폰만 보고 있네.
→ I should go to bed early, but I keep scrolling on my phone.
책을 좀 읽어야 하는데, 요즘은 영상만 보게 돼.
→ I should be reading, but lately I just end up watching YouTube.
일찍 일어나야 하는데, 아침엔 항상 피곤해.
→ I should wake up early, but I’m always tired in the morning.
6️⃣ “그래도 이것 하나는 좋아” — Still, this one thing is nice.
넌 체력 하나는 참 좋아.
→ At least you’ve got a lot of energy.
회사 가는 건 싫지만, 점심 시간에 산책하는 건 좋아.
→ I hate going to work, but I do enjoy lunchtime walks.
여긴 계란말이 하나는 진짜 맛있어.

“Let’s just say the anticipation has me in a state of heightened anxiety. Actually, the truth is, I feel more annoyed than anxious.”
In Korean, the line goes:
“언제 터질지 몰라 긴장되는 상태랄까.
아니, 긴장이라기보다는 성가신 게 맞아요.”
🌟 The key pattern here is “A라기보다는 B인 것 같아요.”
It literally means “Not so much A as B,”
and we use it when we want to correct or clarify what we just said.
The first part, “라기보다는,” contrasts two ideas —
you start with one word, then replace it with something that feels more accurate.
✔️ For example, you might say,
“Not nervous, more like annoyed.”
The ending “인 것 같아요” adds softness.
It’s like saying “I think…” or “It feels like…” —
a polite way to express your honest feeling without sounding too direct.
So, when you catch yourself saying the wrong emotion,
you can simply fix it by saying,
“A 라기보다는 B 인 것 같아요.”

오늘은 10월 20일, 월요일이에요.
드라마 멜로무비 3화에 나오는 무비의 대사로 함께 할게요.
“언제 터질지 몰라 긴장되는 상태랄까.
아니, 긴장이라기보다는 성가신 게 맞아요.”
‘A라기 보다는 B인 것 같다.’ 이 패턴은 상대가 내 감정을 잘못 이해했거나, 내가 한 말을 조금 정정하고 싶을 때 사용해요. 앞의 말보다는 뒤의 말이 더 정확하다고 느낄 때 쓰는 구조예요.
“놀라기보다는 당황한 것 같아요.”
“슬프다기보다는 허전한 것 같아요.”
‘것 같아요’는 내 생각을 너무 직접적이지 않고, 부드럽게 표현할 때 사용해요.
🎙 예문은 천천히 한 번, 영어 번역 한 번, 실제 한국인이 말하는 속도로 두 번 더 들려드릴게요. 여러 번 따라해 보면, 실제 상황에서 잘 사용할 수 있을 거예요.
1️⃣ 피곤하다기보다는 기운이 없는 것 같아요.
→ I’m not exactly tired, just a bit drained.
2️⃣ 화났다기보다는 실망한 것 같아요.
→ I’m not angry, more like disappointed.
3️⃣ 무섭다기보다는 긴장되는 것 같아요.
→ It’s not scary, it just makes me nervous.
4️⃣ 불편하다기보다는 어색한 것 같아요.
→ Not really uncomfortable, just awkward.
A 한 건 아니고, 그냥 조금 B 해요. / A 한 건 아닌데, 그냥 조금 B 해요.
이 표현도 실제로 자주 쓰이는 말이에요. 같이 연습해 볼게요.
✅ 피곤한 건 아니고, 그냥 조금 기운이 없어요.
✅ 화난 건 아니고, 그냥 조금 실망했어요.
✅ 무서운 건 아닌데, 그냥 조금 긴장되네요.
