Eden Malinoff: OCD, Burnout, & Taking a Break from Baked SoCal
Welcome Eden Malinoff to Trying to Figure it Out. Eden is the owner of Baked SoCal – the actual best cookies in Los Angeles. Today, we're here to talk about mental health and what led Eden to take a pause on her baking business. A few weeks ago, and for the first time, Eden shared on social media that she struggles with obsessive compulsive disorder and an eating disorder. In this episode, we dive into those struggles and discuss how OCD led Eden to start baking in the first place. Eden opens up and shares her whole story. She moved to New York City freshman year to attend NYU in the dark days of the pandemic. She dropped out to move back home with her parents, and explains from there how she ended up living in LA making the best cookies in the second biggest city in the country. SOLO: I Deleted Social Media...Here's What Happened
I quit social media for a week and here's what I learned. Welcome back to Trying to Figure it Out. In this episode, I take you through the events that led me to feeling completely burnt out by the doomscroll and deciding to actually do something about it. This is the first time I have ever committed to taking a break from social media. Ever. Since I signed up for Instagram when I was 14 years old, I have not taken a day off from checking these apps. Until now! My three friends and I decided that we'd had enough and in this episode I'm going to fill you in on everything I gained from that experience. And yes, I'm back on TikTok now, but I've set parameters that I'm sticking to and boundaries that are working for me. Listen to this episode and get inspired to put the phone down. SOLO: How To Find The Right Therapist
This week on Trying to Figure it Out, I'm sharing all my best advice for how to find the right therapist for you. I share my recent decision to move on from someone who wasn't helping me in the way I need, and how I'm finding a therapist who will be a better fit. A therapy journey isn't linear and it can be hard to find the right person to help you work through the difficult emotions that will inevitably surface during your sessions. In today's episode, I break down all the different therapy modalities that I've tried, logistical elements to consider when picking your therapist, and where to actually find a therapist who checks all your boxes. There's a therapist out there for you! I hope this episode helps you find them. Also available as a video podcast on YouTube. SOLO: Summer Recap & The Art of the Half-Rot
We're approaching peak sweater weather and I'm officially defrosting – Fall is my time to shine. But before we get into all the autumnal festivities, I'm here with a solo episode this week to recap my summer. My summer started off with a bang in May. I had 2.3 million events in May, and went on a dream vacay to Hawaii the first week in June. I recap those events for you in this episode, but, once June came around, I needed a serious reset. My overflowing schedule has always helped me distract myself from how I'm really feeling on the inside, and in this episode, I share how I learned to slow down and connect with myself again this summer. I introduce the art of the half-rot and how I'm working on co-existing with my trauma. Happy fall everyone!! Also available as a video podcast on YouTube. Trying To Figure It Out
Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Becoming a New Mom
This week on Trying to Figure It Out, I'm with Dr. Arias, a psychologist and expert in all things pregnancy, postpartum, women's health, and relationship dynamics. Having a baby is the ultimate lesson in taking a leap into the unknown and Dr. Arias is here to break down the mental side of becoming a mom. She explains how special and fragile the human body is during pregnancy and postpartum. Physically and mentally, Dr. Arias prioritizes taking care of yourself so you can take care of your baby. She talks about postpartum depression and the feelings some moms get after having a baby, and how that is normal. Almost everything that happens around having a baby is out of the mom's control. And that is really, really hard. Dr.Arias explains ways to manage that feeling and answers more questions you have about pregnancy and postpartum. Enjoy! Also available as a video podcast on YouTube. Plastic Surgery: Buccal Fat Removal, Botox, & Botched Lip Filler
Let's talk about plastic surgery. Welcome back to another TTFIO solo episode. This week, I'm going completely makeup-free while detailing the highs and lows of every single cosmetic procedure and surgery I've tried. We talk about the first time I went to a plastic surgeon (when I was 20!) and which procedures the surgeon told me I could consider to enhance my appearance. And the truth is, I did end up going under the knife at his suggestion. Botox, filler, injectables…I walk you through the little tweaks that I intend to do for the foreseeable future. Not all my experiences have been positive though, and I reveal the one major thing that I regret doing and why. Finally, I tell the story of a terrifying and traumatizing filler experience, and why I have no plans to ever get my lips filled again. Also available as a video podcast on YouTube. Dr. GPT: How I Manage My Health Anxiety
I'm here to confess something this week on TTFIO. I am a hypochondriac. As long as I can remember, I have experienced excessive worry and anxiety about my health. In this episode, I take you along my journey and explain my experience with health-related anxiety. I was in a car accident with my mom when I was 8 years old, and since then, I've created stories and convinced myself that I am suffering serious illness despite medical reassurances that I am not. Good news is, I've started to figure it out. I'm starting to learn how to manage. And in this episode, I share what's really helped me better manage a decade worth of anxieties. Hope some of this can help you or someone you love. Also available as a video podcast on YouTube. This week on TTFIO, we're answering all your questions about egg freezing and IVF. I'm interviewing Dr. Huang, the fertility specialist who froze my eggs six years ago. I deal with PCOS, and you'll learn why egg freezing was the right choice for me. Dr. Huang covers the reasons why you might consider freezing your eggs and he breaks down exactly what happens during the egg freezing process. He even shares what men can do if sperm quality is an issue for a couple. Finally, we discuss the expenses associated with egg freezing and the uncertain future for reproductive care after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Also available as a video podcast on YouTube. Trying To Figure It Out
Shame, Guilt, and Power Imbalances
In this week's solo episode, I open up about the inappropriate and illegal relationship I found myself in when I was 16 years old. Even now, over ten years later, I'm still processing and healing from this experience, and today's episode is part of that journey. I recap everything for you and you'll hear how I wound up in a relationship with my high school strength coach. I'm coming to terms with the shame and the guilt that I carry from this relationship, and this is my message to you: It is not your fault. If you've been in an abusive relationship, you did not deserve what your abuser put you through. Even if you welcomed the relationship at the time, that does not mean that the abuse was okay. Recovering from abuse is confusing and uncomfortable, and if there is anyone else out there who knows what I'm talking about, I get it. I hope today's episode helps you feel less alone. Love you. Jimbo the Drag Clown: RuPaul, Drag, & Pride
HAPPY PRIDE EVERYONE. ROAD TRIP!! I packed up my car and drove to Las Vegas to sit down with Jimbo the Drag Clown hours before their live show. After chatting about how we met, Jimbo recaps her days as a little kid, when she'd spend hours playing dress up with her brother until their scientist father put an end to it. She tells the story of how she started off studying biology in college to please her dad, and reveals the path that took her out west and how that led to discovering who she truly is. I loved our conversation about coming out, hiding parts of ourselves, and the power of embracing what makes us different.
