Say It How It Is
Part 1 - Both Sides Of The Bottle with Sarah Stonehouse

In this powerful first part of our two-part special Both Sides of the Bottle, I'm joined by my cohost for this episode, Ellie Boatman. We sit down with the incredibly open and courageous Sarah Stonehouse who shares her deeply personal journey through alcoholism, just as she celebrates her six-year sobriety anniversary.

This episode focuses on the side of the addict and dives into the raw reality of addiction—from the chaos and damage it caused in Sarah’s life, to the emotional toll it took on her and her loved ones. She speaks candidly about the guilt, the shame, and the wake-up calls, but also about the incredible support network that helped her find her way out. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to live inside the grip of addiction, or you’ve watched someone close to you struggle, this conversation offers a brutally honest window into both the pain and the hope that coexist in recovery. Sarah doesn’t hold back, and her story is a reminder that healing is messy, personal, and possible.

Part 2 of Both Sides of the Bottle will shift the focus to the people on the outside—the family, friends, and loved ones who lived through the experience alongside the individual suffering with the addiction. Together, these two episodes tell the full story of addiction and its ripple effect on everyone involved.

Say It How It Is
Our IVF Journey as Mrs & Mrs Joyce-Butchers

In this intimate and inspiring episode, Ffion sits down with Welsh and Olympic rugby stars Alisha and Jasmine Joyce-Butchers to talk about their shared IVF journey, navigating fertility while being full-time professional athletes—and a married couple. With the Rugby World Cup looming, Alisha made the emotional decision to put family first, stepping away from the opportunity to compete this year and to focus on starting a family.

The couple opens up about the physical and emotional toll of IVF, how they supported each other while training and competing at the highest level, and what it means to prioritize motherhood in the peak of a sporting career. It’s a rare and powerful glimpse into the personal lives behind the public profiles—about sacrifice, strength, and redefining what success looks like.

Say It How It Is
Running on Empty - Navigating RED-S as a professional runner with Jake Smith

In this episode of the new season, Ffion is joined by guest co-host Ollie Olds for an honest and eye-opening conversation with Jake Smith, professional runner for Nike and the NN Running Team.

Jake opens up about his deeply personal journey with RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) — a condition that silently affects many endurance athletes. He shares how years of underfuelling and the pressure to fit a certain ‘runner’ body type led to a significant decline in his health, disrupted training cycles, and compromised race performances.

We dive into the mental toll of battling an invisible condition, the emotional strain it’s placed on his family, and the frustration of navigating recovery in a sporting culture that often celebrates sacrifice at all costs. Jake also challenges the outdated perceptions of what a distance runner “should” look like — and how breaking free from those ideals has been key to rebuilding his relationship with sport and with himself.

Despite the setbacks, Jake speaks with quiet determination about his aim to hit the Olympic qualifying time, not for validation, but as a powerful step toward proving that you can compete at the highest level while prioritizing health, sustainability, and self-respect.

This is an essential listen for athletes, coaches, and fans who want to understand the human side of elite sport — the part that often goes unspoken.

Say It How It Is
Testicular Cancer Awareness with The Oddballs Foundation and 19 year old testicular cancer survivor Jamie Young

On today’s episode of Say It How It Is, Ffion and Gwen are joined by The Oddballs Foundation Manager, Kieran Kelly and 19 year old testicular cancer survivor, Jamie Young. Oddballs was founded back in 2014, and uses wild, wacky and wonderful underwear prints as a way of creating conversation and awareness around testicular Cancer. Shortly after in 2015, The Oddballs Foundation was set up to act as the main charity affiliate to the brand and continue to spread awareness and tackle the stigma- delivering workshops and talks, with their now 50 university ambassadors across the UK. Jamie is the incoming Oddballs Foundation University Ambassador for Reading University. In 2019 at the age of just 14, Jamie was diagnosed with testicular cancer after experiencing hip pain and going to get it checked out.

This was just the beginning of his journey. The cancer has unfortunately spread to both his pelvis and lung, which required multiple rounds of chemotherapy and major operations. Following his recovery, Jamie is now keen to share his experiences with as many people as he can, raise awareness and contribute to breaking down barriers in talking around the topic. This episode provides huge insight into both what The Oddballs Foundation strives towards and how Jamie reacted to and dealt with his diagnosis and treatment, to bounce back and see life as he does today.

Say It How It Is
Supporting others with safe spaces with Ollie Olds and Lloyd Ashley

On today’s episode of Say It How It is, Ffion and Gwen are joined by Ollie Olds, mindset mentor, and Lloyd Ashley, ex-professional rugby player and founder of Living Well. In this episode expect to learn all things finding purpose, the power of service and helping others, how perspective allows you to be grateful for what you have and how to provide a safe space for people to talk. Ollie went through his own journey through depression following 3 ACL injuries and being told he shouldn’t play again. Following this he went through a process of finding his identity and purpose again before becoming a transformation coach to help others do the same and reach their potential. Lloyd, after gaining many different qualifications alongside his rugby career, decided he wanted to study counselling and fell in love with the idea of bringing people together, creating connections and creating safe spaces to have conversations.

Newport born Ashton, has grown his rugby career through an academy programme all the way to international honours. Unfortunately, he has experienced 2 ACL injuries, one in 2021(MCL and ACL) and one in 2023 (LCL and ACL). He is currently rehabilitating his current ACL injury in the hope to return to rugby at the end of the year.

Stuart was appointed as a consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in July, 2005. He has a full-time NHS contract and specialises in sports injuries and all aspects of knee surgery. He has been clinical director and is currently Audit lead for his department. Stuart himself has experienced an ACL injury during his rugby career, so has a lot of empathy and understanding for his patients.

During this episode, expect to learn about the mechanisms of ACL injuries, the difference in risk between males and females and all different graph options for this level of surgery. It is clear that there needs to be more research into the increase of ACL injuries and the girls discuss all different forms of preventative measures that need to be implemented in sport. Due to the massive rise in these extremely horrific injuries, and with Ffion and Gwen experiencing these themselves, we hope this episode provides some insight into the severity of this injury.

Say It How It Is
Curiosity through conversation with Simon Clarke, Founder of Speakeasy Club

On today’s episode of Say It How It is, Ffion and Gwen are joined by Founder of Speakeasy Club and mental health advocate Simon Clarke.

Simon founded Speakeasy Club following his own struggles with depression and anxiety over a number of years, with the aim of creating an environment where people feel comfortable to be vulnerable and open up about their own thoughts and feelings. For Simon, it took hitting rock bottom to find a way out. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Through Speakeasy Club, resources and conversations are being made more readily available to access in your time of need. And through Simon sharing his own story on this episode, we hope you can see that no matter what you are going through and how you feel, you are not alone and there is always a way out.

During this episode, expect to learn about the power of words and the lasting impact they can have on someone, the benefits and many forms of therapy, why being curious is so important, and so much more.

You can find more information on Speakeasy Club and their resources here: https://speakeasyclub.co.uk/about-us/

Say It How It Is
Finding purpose through pain; Childhood cancer with Morgan's Army.

On todays episode of Say It How It Is, Ffion and Gwen are joined by Natalie Riddler, founder of the Morgans Army Charity. On June 28th 2023, Natalie and her husband Matt tragically lost their wonderful little boy Morgan after a long and hard battle with Cancer. Throughout Morgan’s journey, Matt and Natalie fought unbelievably hard to help their son get the diagnosis and treatment he deserved, and in doing so realised that there was a missing piece in supporting children, parents and families that are suffering with an ongoing fight against childhood cancer. From this sparked Morgans Army, a charity set up with the tag line “no one fights alone”, aiming to bridge some of these gaps, and help to provide families with support during the toughest of times.

During the episode, Natalie shares openly the highs and lows of Morgan’s story, shares her favourite memories but also discusses how difficult it was and still is for them as a family. She explains how important family is and expresses the meaning behind her values, after what her family has sadly experienced.

There is incredible work being doing at Morgan’s Army and everyone at Say It How It Is hugely supports people just like Natalie, who are trying to make a difference to those in need!
