They say a picture is worth a thousand words—so what’s a podcast about a mental picture worth? Let’s find out.
I’m Dave Kydd, a psychotherapist on a personal and professional mission to help people live their best possible lives. In The I AM Podcast, we explore self-growth and mental health through pictures.
Each episode focuses on a picture or a collection of pictures and unpacks how they can be used to help us become the person we’re meant to be. Think of it as curating your very own internal art museum: episode by episode, frame by frame.
Authentic. Creative. Curious. Informative. And never taking ourselves too seriously.

Hello folks. In this episode, we’re talking about marriage — or any long-term relationship, really — and why it helps to picture it like building a house.
I’ll walk you through the “foundation” every relationship needs: seven non-negotiable needs that form the base of a healthy partnership. Then we’ll climb up to the walls and roof — the daily choices and habits that keep your relationship standing strong, even when things feel messy or unfair.
We’ll also look at why sometimes, the best question you can ask isn’t “What’s best for me?” but “What’s best for my marriage?”
It’s a practical, hopeful conversation about how two people can keep building something solid and beautiful — one small repair, one brave choice, one day at a time.

Hello folks! In this episode, we’re diving into one of life’s hardest experiences — grief. I want you to imagine your grief like a storm: unpredictable, powerful, and at times, impossible to see through.
I’ll share a bit about my own losses, and how those experiences shaped the way I understand grief in my work as a psychotherapist and as a person.
We’ll talk about what it really means to “move through” grief instead of trying to outrun it, how to start healing by accepting a new reality, and why you can move through any storm, no matter how big.
It’s a heavier one today, but if you’ve ever felt lost in your own storm, my hope is that this conversation helps you find a little direction — and a little light — as you keep rowing forward.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words — so how much is a podcast about a mental picture worth? Let’s find out.
I’m Dave Kydd, a psychotherapist who believes we’re all born with the hunger to live the best possible life — to become who we’re meant to be. That’s what this podcast is all about. In The I Am Podcast, we talk about how to live our best lives through pictures. Each episode focuses on an image — something I use in my therapy practice — and we unpack how it can help us grow, change, and see ourselves differently.
In this first episode, I explore “The Life Drawing” — a metaphor that came from drawing games with my kids, where each turn transformed the picture in ways we never expected. It’s a simple but powerful way to understand how life works: unpredictable, frustrating, beautiful, and always changing. Even when life draws something we didn’t plan, we always get the pen next.

Hi, I’m Dave Kydd, and this is the second episode of The I Am Podcast — where we build our internal art museum one image at a time. These are the pictures and metaphors I use in my therapy practice to help people see life more clearly and grow into who they’re meant to be.
In this episode, we explore what it means to imagine your life like a movie. Every story has a main character (that’s you) and a villain — the untrustworthy voice that tries to pull you away from becoming your best self. I’ll talk about how to spot that problem villain, how to recognize your trustworthy voice, and how to take the pen back when life tries to rewrite your script.
We’ll look at how this simple idea — two voices, two wells, two sources — can change the way you face your problems no matter what they are. And as always, we’ll add a new image to our internal art museum.
