The Fasting Highway
Episode 293 Keith McDonald -The journey continues and just gets more amazing.

Keith McDonald is back for his fifth appearance on The Fasting Highway with his good friend Graeme Currie. At 45, Keith is a father of two daughters and has experienced a profound transformation—physically, emotionally, and mentally. His journey began at 317 pounds in 2015, and by 2019, he had lost 28 pounds, reaching 289 pounds when he discovered the benefits of fasting. Through dedication and deep self-reflection, he dropped to 173 lbs by 2021.

But the journey wasn’t without challenges. Keith became obsessed with weight loss, and the extreme drop led to years of sciatica and physical pain. That turning point led him to strength training 2.5 years ago, where he rebuilt hisbody, resolved his back issues, and added nearly 30 lbs of muscle—all while maintaining his clothing size. He also underwent skin surgery to complete his transformation.

In this episode, Keith opens up about the real-life tribulations of maintenance, the emotional toll of transformation, and how fasting remains a foundational part of his life—not just for weight, but for wellness, resilience, and purpose

The Fasting Highway
Encore Series -Tonya Kortekaas A worthy relisten of an amazing IF journey.

Loved this episode, Tonya has had an amazing journey. Enjoy this encore episode as we take a short holiday break , We will be back next week with all new episodes.

Tonya Kortekaas lives in Pontiac, Michigan, with her husband, Michael, of 11 years. She is the mother of three adult sons and a “bonus” mom to Michael’s three children.

Tonya spent most of her adult life as a stay-at-home mom of 3 growing boys and self-employed as a portrait photographer.  She felt that her most important mission in life was to raise her children and give them all the care and love they deserved.  She has been good at putting her family before her own needs, but the costs of that have been not caring for her mind and body as she should.  As her children have become adults and she has had more time to work on herself, she has entered into the full timeworking world and currently works for Oakland University.  She enjoys outdoor walks, kayaking, biking, watercolour painting and coffee in her free time. Tonya has struggled with her weight since her early 20s. She realizes that emotional eating and overindulging in sweets have been her issues.   She has tried countless diets, which have allowed her to lose weight but eventually gain it all back and more over the years.  At her annual physical exam in March of 2022, she was confronted with the highestweight of her lifetime at 349 lbs. and a BMI of 51.  Her blood pressure was soaring to a dangerous high, and her blood tests showed she was pre-diabetic.  She knew at that moment it was time for a significant change. Shewas sick of living life with this ongoing weight struggle and longed deeply to be a “normal” "-sized person.  Little did she know that change was going to lead her to an intermittent fasting lifestyle and complete freedom from her struggles with eating.  She’s lost 155 lbs over 26 months of her weight loss journey. Since being on the podcast in February of 2023, episode 161, Tonya has discovered the benefits of a carnivore lifestyle and hasnoticed numerous health benefits by cutting the sugar and processed foods out of her life.

The Fasting Highway
Encore Episode -Amy Jo Holcombe -Living her best life a recap from episode 264.

Encore Episode 264

Amy Jo is a wife, mother, small business owner, and healthcoach, and college English professor.

She and her husband, Rush, have been married for 27 years and have enjoyed being empty nesters since their son married three years ago.

Six years ago, enjoying life and keeping up with her many responsibilities were overwhelming. She was ballooning back up to her all-time highest weight of 300 pounds and suffering from debilitating nerve pain from a hip injury that led to labral repair surgery in December of 2016.

Morbidly obese her entire adult life, she gave IF a try in January 2020, after two coworkers had been doing a version of it through a program sponsored by their school’s insurance.

The rest, as they say, is history. Since IF day one on January 6, 2020, Amy Jo has lost about 90 pounds and is no longer in chronic pain or taking the strong meds that helped her merely function daily. She is also finding balance after losing her Mom and entering menopause in 2023.

Even with a bit of weight gain, the clean fast remains one non-negotiable ingredient for maintaining a healthy intermittent fasting lifestyle.

The Fasting Highway
Episode 292 Elaine Heyworth -Six Years living an Intermittent Fasting Journey on the Path To Better Health.

I’m Elaine, and I’m 59 years old.  I’ve been fasting for 6 years now, and it still remains the easiest and most effective way of keeping weight off for me.  I’m not one of these people who have been able to lose the initial weight, and never put another pound on - I have had several hiccups along the way, where medication, illness or stress has allowed my weight to rise, and required me to fall back to fasting to get it off again.  But it’s always there.  So reliable for me, and I know I’m lucky that my body always responds to IF very quickly.  I lost my job last year, and that was a very stressful period.  Then Julian and I decided to sell our house, but after nine months, it hadn’t sold, and both of our stress levels were off the scale.  In June of this year, we decided to rent out our house and buy a boat in the Midlands of the UK.  Even that was stressful - leaving a five-bedroom house for a two-bedroom boat was extraordinarily difficult, but, as always, we got through it.  My weight was up and down like a yo-yo, but now I’m out walking again (my only exercise!), and we’re living a relaxed, happy life on the boat.  Winter is about to come, and we think that will be difficult, but I don’t mind difficult things under my control; I just hate when other people drive me down a stressful path!

My advice for fasters remains the same from the first time I spoke on Graeme’s podcast - don’t compare yourself to others because comparison is the thief of joy, we are all individuals, and everyone of us will have a different reactionto something someone else is doing, and live your life - IF shouldn’t take the joy from your life, it should add to it because now you look and feel fantastic!!

The Fasting Highway
Episode 291 Ros Boland -A journey that is inspiring and an Amazing Transformation of Mind Body and Soul

Bio By Ros Boland

I’m Ros, 46 years old, and I am a Teacher Aide at a school in Dalby, Queensland, Australia. I have been married for 23 years to a wonderful man, Justin, who has been a great supporter of my journey. I have three amazing children, Jimmy, 21, Clare, 19, and Leila, 17, who are incredibly proud of me and my greatest assets.  I grew up in a Lebanese family where food is such an important thing. Although growing up we didn’t eat processed foods I was surrounded by great cooks. I was an active young girl and lived on a farm where we had to work alongside our Mum and Dad. I was always so much bigger than my peers at school, and I  was always physically active.

Once I left school, my weight increased as I was very social and never wanted to miss out. I put on a lot of weight living the lifestyle of most 18-year-olds. I  ended up joining Gloria Marshal and lost a lot of weight, but soon put it all back on. When I got married in 2002, I joined Weight Watchers and lost 20kg, and I felt great. I was 78kg. Once again, I  gotback into bad habits and put on weight plus some. In 2003, I had 2 miscarriages, and in  2004, I had my first baby, and Igained 18kgs.  I just kept getting bigger after each pregnancy, and I was in denial as to how big I had gotten. I was resigned to the fact that I would always be a big woman; I come from a line of big people. I’ve always enjoyed cooking for my family and entertaining, and I just thought this is normal, this is who I am. In 2022, I went to my doctor, and she told me that I was morbidly obese and I was killing myself. I knew that I was in a bad way with my weight, and I just didn’t know what to do. I have a family history of heart disease and diabetes, so I knew that I didn’t want to end up like so many of my family members. My doctor suggested I take Ozempic, so I did.

My highest weight was 153.2kg (337.7 pounds) in January 2022. I lost 20kg on Ozempic by July 2022 and could no longer get Ozempic due to not being a diabetic. I was honestly devastated as it was working so well.  In September 2022, I ran into a friend who had lost a significant amount of weight and asked what she had been doing. We discussed Intermittent fasting, and I started listening to Gin Stephens' podcasts, immediately starting with clean fasting and delaying my eating window. I read her book, "Delay Don’t Deny." I focused on what I was eating, and at first, I didn’t really change what I was eating, but I soon realised my body wanted different things.   I went on to lose 33kg and am still losing. My current weight is around 100kg. I don’t actually weigh myself, but go on how my clothes feel.  I don’t set myself goals as I have struggled with this all my life, and I know I just get disappointed when I haven’t achieved them.

I started out unable to walk to the end of my street, which is only about 100 metres, and I knew I loved to walk, but I just didn’t have the motivation to do it. I now walk between 7-10 kilometres 5 days a week, and this is due to IF. Walking with my best friend, Chelsea, has been the best thing for both my mental and physical well-being. Without her support, I wouldn’t be so committed.

Since starting IF, I haven’t looked back; losing over 53kg over the past few years has been the best thing. I have had so many NSV along the way, and I will never go back to not living this lifestyle.

The Fasting Highway
Episode 290 -Chelsea Turner Persistence and Perserverance Pays Off. An Inspiring Intermittent Fasting Journey.

Bio By Chelsea Turner.

My Highest Weight was 90 kg (198 pounds) in September 2022. I lost 15kgs (33 pounds) in February 2023, but then went back to my old habits because the protocol involved constant eating, which I found boring, just like every other diet I have been on. Started 1 OMAD 14th May 2025 88.4kg.-194 Pounds Current weight now 72kg-158 pounds Net Loss to date 16.4kg-36.156 Pounds

Height 1.62cm Age 52 Partners with my Brother, Chris, as we run a Franchise of GJ Gardner Homes, a Building Company. Married for 32 years to my childhood sweetheart, Bart, I have 3 wonderful daughters, Gabby, 25, Zoe, 23 and Millie, 17 years, and a gorgeous new addition, Grandbaby Charles,s 10wks old xxxx Started with bestie Ros (bf on episode 430 on Gin), Feb 23, walking as I had joined a Diet Phenomenon that hit our town called Weight Loss Coaching Works September 2022: Lost 15 kg from 90 kg to 75 kg. Feb 2023, then fell off the train of the latest fad as it was too hard, just constantly bloated from constant eating 24/7.

So, I knew my daughter was getting married in September 2025 and was uncomfortable again, so I decided to pull on my big girl pants and started at 88.4kg on May 14th 2025, OMAD and religiously joined Graeme in the Patreon Zoom meetings as I have always needed accountability, so got to the wedding on 19th Sept 2025, 16.4kg down andThe photos say it all, and the number of people who just said, 'Chelsea, you look so healthy,' was a wonderful feeling on both the outside and inside.

So freeing, especially being on holiday and the foodnoise gone and longer windows, but just having the OMAD on hols like an entree, main, desert and the odd 1 or 5 cocktails, and so freeing putting my clothes onEach morning on the holiday, they just slip on because I still have that stupid mental noise: 'Oh, Chelsea, you are on holiday, here comes the weight gain!'

Anyway, I’m finally free now, and I still want to reach the 20kg-44 Pounds Mark, but if it takes another six months, who cares? This is the last time, 100% guaranteed!

Episode 286 -Tribute Episode -Karen Cahill RIP - Two People Three Hundred Pounds Lost A Conversation About Transformation

In this episode, we pay tribute to our very dear community member Karen Cahill, who sadly passed away recently. Karen and I were kindred spirits in many ways, with a lot of similarities in our fasting journeys. Karen lost 170 pounds living an intermittent fasting lifestyle and was a shining light in our community for some years. Karen was always looking to pay it forward and help others. She was truly an amazing person. Karen was living her best life and enjoying all that transformation brings. I will miss her as a good friend and a great member of our Patreon community. This podcast was recorded exclusively for our Patreon community and has not been aired in the mainstream until now. RIP Karen, and thank you for everything you did for us all. Special mention of Kaen's family, whom she often spoke about in 1a loving way. We are thinking of you all, Karen, forever in our hearts at The Fasting Highway Community.

Bio update: Since we last spoke, I faced some serious medical challenges and started to get looser with both food choices and fasting hours. The Fasting Highway
Episode 284 -Anna Young 35Kg 70 pounds lost in just over a year living an Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle.

I’m Anna, 41 years old, and I live on a small lifestyle property in Ashburton, New Zealand, with my husband Russ and three young children. I’m a part-time primary school teacher and stay-at-home Mum. I grew up in an ‘average’ Kiwi home in the 80s/90s; very few takeaways and ultra-processed foods, but delicious home-cooked meals and a really active lifestyle, playing a lot of sport.

I developed early and had a lean, athletic build. I was diagnosed with PCOS at 14 years old, and later with insulin resistance and hypothyroidism. Playing a lot of sport kept my weight in check, but I always felt bigger than my peers.

The freedom to eat what I wanted, partying at university and decreased physical activity after moving out of home saw my weight balloon. I’ve done Weight Watchers multiple times over the years and could lose a lot of weight since I’m a rule follower and very good at keeping to a diet! But Icould never get to that point of maintenance. Returning to NZ after living overseas, I met Russ, and started doing CrossFit in 2014 and seeing a nutritionist. I focused on eating nutrient-dense ‘clean’ foods and lost about 20kg. In 2017, Russ and I married, and I was the smallest I’d been in a long time. A year later, we had our son, and 21 months later, our middle daughter. I sadly miscarried our 3rd baby and then had our youngest daughter in 2022. I developed gestational diabetes early on in my last pregnancy and was injecting insulin. This, coupled with a family history of diabetes on both sides of my family, meant I was on track to develop diabetes in the near future.

Being pregnant 4 times in 5 years and looking after a young family meant my health took a back seat, and I continued putting on weight. I’ve always enjoyed cooking healthy meals for my family and kept working out, but was fighting a losing battle. I was resigned to the fact I would be plus size for the rest of my life, and was trying to be ok with that, I couldn’t see any other way.

On 15 July 2024, I started IF and haven’t looked back, losing over 35kg in just over a year and am now heading towards the land of maintenance.

The Fasting Highway
Episode 283 Elaine and Julain Walker - An Inspiring Couple Fasting Together in The Land of The Rising Sun.

Hello, we're Elaine and Julian Walker. We're American expats. We are currently living in Japan again, this time in northern Japan.  We've been doing intermittent fasting since mid-March of 2018. My husband was already looking at some health videos by Thomas Delauer, but I never really caught on to it.  After moving to Japan in 2017, I knew I wanted to improve my health, but I lacked a strategy.  It wasn't until I went in to get a dental cleaning done that I was told that I had high blood pressure. They could do the cleaning, but not give me a cavity filling.  That led me to see a doctor, and I was told that I had hypertension. I immediately went home and started looking at health videos, which led me to Dr. Eric Berg.  We credit him for introducing keto and intermittent fasting to us and additionally, gaining more knowledge on artery health, vitamin information, and especially the importance of vitamin D3 and K2.

Three days after that doctor's appointment, I started IF and keto. Nine days after that, my blood pressure started going down, and I was able to wear my wedding band again.  My highest weight was 278. Julian saw that I wanted to skip a meal that first day, and he started IF with me.

When we last spoke to you, we were living in Hawaii for a couple of years. My husband's government job has a consecutive time limit on how long we can live in Japan.  We never stopped doing IF, but we both were having window creep, eating fast food and the standard American diet a bit more. We strayed away from keto and carnivore. We've been back in Japan since August 2024.  Julian arranged for us to see a military base doctor so that we could assess our health. On October 10th, the doctor called Julian at night, saying that his A1c was very high. And my weight had bounced up to 215 pounds. The next day, we kicked things back into gear. Julian wanted to go strict carnivore, and that's where we've been since October. The carnivore diet has reduced visceral fat, improved our A1c markers, and resolved our fatty liver.

I am now down to 170, which is less than my high school weight. Julian has lost more than 30 pounds.

I have tips, such as:

- Prioritise protein when you open your eating window.

- workout fasted

- Limit and remove bad oils

- Trace minerals and electrolytes are very important.

The Fasting Highway
Episode 282 -Larry Zydek 70 years Young a Truly Inspiring Tale of Transformation Through Living an Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle.

Hello. I am Larry Zydek, and I recently celebrated my 70th birthday.  For most of those 70 years, I have had a weight problem.  When I was a child, I was overweight (fat) to the point that on special occasions, my mother had to have suits custom-made.  What an embarrassment.  Husky was the word for fat clothes, as most people know.  When I turned 11, a doctor prescribed what I think was an amphetamine.  I, too, for a short period, along with some diet modification, lost weight and kept it off reasonably well until my mid-twenties.  Then, marriage, children, and work, without vigilance over food and drink, resulted in weight gain.  Each time I peaked I tried to lose the weight.  I tried Weight Watchers, Atkins, low-fat, low-carb, and low-calorie diets, as well as those by Dean Ornish and Michael Thurmond, among others.  Each of them worked and then did not work.  I supplemented my exercise routine with activities such as aerobics, weightlifting, stair climbing, walking, and biking.  Exercise, while beneficial for your health, does not significantly contribute to weight loss or weight control.  In my mid-forties, I developed a thyroid condition called Hashimoto’s disease.   It is an autoimmune disease that, if uncontrolled, can kill you, and I was close to that at the time.  It is easily controlled via hormone replacement, but I blamed it for my inability to lose weight year after year.  My lifelong struggle to lose and maintain weight and to be healthier was finally resolved through fasting.  I always tried to be health-conscious as I read about diets, food preparation, and practised healthful routines, but I had bad eating and drinking habits I developed through life.  While I tried fasting in the past, it was not the CleanFast, and it was not a daily routine.  I can say that now I practice a daily 22-hour fast with a 2-hour eating window, which I modify as necessary on special days or occasions.  I still have the thyroid issue, but have currently lost 70 pounds on IF since October 1, 2024.  It is a testament to the process, regardless of the particular disease.  My blood work results are all excellent, and my physical endurance has shown significant improvement.  I am not sure if my story will help anyone, but I feel that sharing it may encourage someone on the fence or feeling apprehensive about fasting, or give some encouragement to someone having a difficult time.

The Fasting Highway
Episode 281 Bobbi Fosbery , When love met Intermittent Fasting a Truly Inspiring Intermittent Fasting Journey.

At 55, Bobbi embodies a remarkable journey of health transformation. A Mom to three adults and now a Grandma of two, Bobbi was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in October 2021. She swiftly took charge, initiating significant changes to her diet and embracing strength training. The following January, a pivotal meeting with Keith McDonald introduced her to intermittent fasting, which further accelerated her progress and marked the start of a beautiful relationship.

By March 2023, Bobbi had achieved a milestone goal: her diabetes was controlled solely through diet, strength training, and fasting, allowing her to discontinue all medication. This dedication also led to an impressive 60-pound weight loss.

Today, Bobbi not only maintains the weight she was at 24 years old but also continues to prioritise her well-being. She works with a personal trainer two to three times a week and leads a very active lifestyle. Though still considered prediabetic, her commitment to health remains unwavering; she recently underwent skin removal surgery as part of her ongoing journey.

The Fasting Highway
Episode 280 Holly Rogers -Living her best IF life. A 70-year-old Grandmothers inspiring Intermittent Fasting Journey.

I'm a wife of 49 years, mother of two adult children, and Grammy to two wonderful girls.  I've worked for my company for 45 years and plan to retire within the next two years.  I love to walk, hike, travel, read and be as active and healthy as possible. I never had to worry about my weight until my early 30s.  I was the skinny kid.  My dad always told me I had toothpick legs. I could eat anything and everything without gaining weight.  When I got married at the age of 22, I weighed 122 pounds, which was the highest weight I'd ever achieved.  When I got pregnant with my daughter eight years later, I weighed 127 lbs.  I gained 22 lbs. during my pregnancy and lost it in a short amount of time.  As I entered my 30s, weight suddenly became an issue, and within about five years, I'd gained up to 160 pounds.  I joined Weight Watchers at work group and got down to 125 lbs., and looked gaunt and unhealthy.  But as is often the case, WW was not sustainable.  And I got back up to where I was when I originally joined WW.I then tried so many other "diets" and landed around 140 lbs.  In 2021, I had a total knee replacement and gained 15 lbs. due to inactivity and comfort eating.  I tried WW again, lost 5 lbs. and then the scale wouldn't budge any further.  My daughter had suggested IF, but the word "fasting" was frightening to me.  Finally, I was so desperate that I said I'd give it a try.  January 26, 2022, was the day I started IF, and I will never live my life any differently.  I lost the other 10 lbs. plus another 15 and have settled into an IF lifestyle.
