Today’s episode is a short one. But it’s also one that you don’t want to miss because I am talking with you about 3 very common habits of high-achieving women that lead directly to anxiety, guilt, and overwhelm in motherhood.
And the thing is, you may not see these habits as problematic because they have likely led you to huge success and achievement in the rest of your life. So, it’s likely that you are doing these things because you think they will serve you and your child. Until today, you may believe they are useful.
In this episode, I will both bring light to these habits that are getting you farther away from what you most want and will also give you ideas for what to do instead.

3 Habits That Lead to Stress and Overwhelm in Motherhood | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 6 Episode 12
Today I am talking with Anna Rahe about the ways that our bodies tell us exactly what we need to find peace, fulfillment, and wellbeing both physically and beyond.
For the past 25+ years, Anna Rahe has explored a transformative and empowering relationship with fascia, helping people invest in their health, restore vitality, and heal themselves using proprietary tools she developed. As the founder and CEO of GST Body, Anna has spoken about holistic body care through fascia around the world, partnered with top athletes, surgeons, physicians, and celebrities, and has been featured in various publications, from Shape to Elle, Net-a-Porter to The Wall Street Journal. Throughout her career, Anna has had the pleasure of working with and helping over ten thousand people find lasting change by restoring their bodies and reclaiming an ageless vital life.
She is also the mom of 3 beautiful children.
Today, we dive deep into the ways we can all better understand and work with our bodies to create the lives we most want… a skill that I’m pretty sure most of you were never taught. Even with my 2-decades worth of knowledge around mental health, I learned so many new things in this conversation and was, quite frankly, blown away by the science Anna shares. There are several simple and accessible ways to very quickly shift our nervous systems out of a heightened state, and you will learn them here, today.
Ok–so just a quick note before we get started. A word you will hear over and over in today’s conversation is Facia- for those not familiar, Fascia is a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle in place. The tissue does more than provide internal structure; fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin. When you are stressed, your fascia tightens up. This tension we feel in our bodies is often the first sign of a nervous system response and by getting more aware, we can use these early somatic experiences of body tightness to alert us and redirect us towards more calm.

Today, I have the joy of talking with my friend Nadia Ali - mom, entrepreneur, educator, and advocate for health and racial equity - about the importance of discomfort. I know- who wants to feel uncomfortable? Looking for and leaning into discomfort is not something that most of us do- in fact, the majority of you listening will have been raised in families where you were taught that discomfort was bad, wrong, or a sign of weakness - you may have been taught that the purpose of life is to achieve and maintain comfort at all times. Today, Nadia and I turn that upside down. We discuss where discomfort can take us, how to tell the difference between discomfort that is dangerous and discomfort that is wise. We look at the role of discomfort in good parenting. And we address the skills necessary for moving through discomfort toward growth and potential. At this time of political instability and high stress in this country, you don’t want to miss this conversation. We are so glad that you are here.
Nadia is a consultant, storyteller, facilitator, and team builder. She has over two decades of experience working with organizations at the intersection of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and systems innovation, healthcare, leadership development, and organizational culture. She helps organizations bring EDI into their operating systems, culture, and the overall fabric of the organization.
Nadia's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion inspired her to launch Idea Labs. Through Idea Labs she fosters a culture of innovation, collaboration and belonging in partnership with non-profit organizations, government institutions and small businesses.
Nadia uses a trauma-informed lens, therapeutic communication techniques, and adult learning principles. She draws from her lived experience and professional experience by blending a deep understanding of racial equity, various leadership frameworks, and workplace dynamics.
In her spare time, Nadia enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking and baking, being outdoors, and building community. She lives in Boulder, CO with her husband and two kids.

This week’s episode is an incredibly inspiring and powerful one. We are airing a coaching call I had with one of my coaching clients... and I have no doubt that you will resonate with a ton of what Carly struggles with on our call.
If you are a woman and mother who identifies as high achieving, type A, all or nothing, and perfectionist thinking, and if you are struggling with anxiety, guilt, overwhelm, and burnout, this episode is for you.
In our call we address limiting beliefs that hold us back, difficult emotions like anxiety, guilt, and shame, pressures in mothering, and work-life balance. The conversation is an amazing example of what happens when we are willing to ask ourselves the hard questions and challenge ourselves to think and behave differently that we have for most of our life.
If the perceived “shoulds” in your life create distress, pain, and even illness for you, the process you learn today will be the start to a life changing shift.
And of course, thank you to the amazing women who was brave enough to allow me to air this call as an episode here. Carly is a true example of integrity and bravery and her commitment to helping other moms know that they aren’t alone is extraordinary.

Today I have the utter privilege of sharing with you a conversation I had with Ellen Bradley about her mothering journey with her 3 beautiful daughters. Ellen is the epitome of bravery, connection, and possibility.
As we continue to navigate the “shoulds” and expectations in motherhood that hold us back from the life we want most, Ellen’s story is an example of what it looks like to forage straight ahead with what feels right instead of what others believe is right.
Her story invites us to embark on a profound journey of self-discovery and fulfillment. She empowers us to embrace our true self, peel back the layers, and dive into the essence of who we are. She calls us forward with courage, urging us to cast aside the noise of the outside world and the weight of societal expectations. Instead, she beckons us to trust our instincts, to listen to the whispers of our heart, and to follow the path that resonates deeply within us.
And she, my friends, has done just that. You will be amazed and inspired by the life she has chosen for her family and the beauty and surprise that has come along with it.

Back to School with Deb Rubin | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 6 Episode 4
Today is part 2 of a 2-part series with the incredible, honest, and inspiring Tracey Yokas. If you haven’t yet listened to Part 1, please take a moment to listen there first as it will help you to make sense of this second, very inspiring conversation. In this episode, Tracey and I discuss her relationship with her daughter and what it means and looks like to be a “securely attached” parent. With vulnerability and deep wisdom, Tracey shares her journey from being insecurely attached to being securely attached, the work that she put into getting there, and the joys and gifts that come from having an extraordinary relationship with her daughter today. Tracey Yokas creates stuff. When she isn’t writing about mental health and wellness, she can be found playing with paint, glitter, and glue. Art fuels her passion for connection in community. She is dedicated to supporting women in their journey towards authenticity and fulfills her mission by creating safe spaces where art, words, and vulnerability meet. A former entertainment industry professional, Tracey has an affinity for color-coded art supplies. She is the author of the book, Bloodlines: A Memoir of Harm and Healing. Tracey shares about her family’s journey with mental illness and healing so that others will know they are not alone. Hope is real. Tracey earned her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from California Lutheran University and lives in Newbury Park, Ca. with her family, cats, and fish. In part 1 of this moving conversation, I talk with Tracey about her journey mothering a daughter with significant mental health challenges. Tracey opens up about the incredible frustration and pain she felt when nothing she was doing to help her daughter seemed to be working and the ultimate opportunity that offered itself when Tracey realized that to support her daughter well she needed to address her own mental health challenges first.
This incredible story touches on generational trauma, mental illness, self care, secure attachment, and creativity and. It is a perfect example of what it looks like to ignore our own needs in motherhood (perhaps simply because we haven’t yet identified that they even exist) and what becomes available to us when we go inside and do the inner work first. Tracey reminds us that our own self care will always be in service of our children.
This first episode of season 6 is the perfect way to forge our pathway into exploring and challenging the “shoulds” and “shouldn’ts” that get in the way of our full potential in motherhood and beyond.
Suzy Holman is a mother, friend, daughter, sister, wife, entrepreneur, coach, mentor, human, and all-around badass. Really. I have no doubt that you will be inspired by her.
Not only does Suzy have 4 gorgeous children and an incredible marriage, but she has started several 7-figure businesses and keeps on going.
But don’t start up with those eye rolls at how “perfect” her life sounds, because Suzy has been through a journey of grief and loss to get there- loss that comes with letting go and grief that comes with leaving behind the ideas, beliefs, and people in her life that held her back from her deepest wisdom about what she wants and needs to be well.
In a nutshell, Suzy is the queen of breaking through the barriers of expectation, living with authenticity and vulnerability through the chaos of that, and coming out stronger time and time again.
If Suzy can do it, you can too.

Breaking the Rules with Suzy Holman | Motherhood Uncut Podcast | Season 6 Episode 1
This month I launched a new series called Mom Talks as a continued commitment to providing free and accessible support to women who are struggling in motherhood. These short 30-minute live talks are designed to leave participants with accessible tools for emotional well-being. These tools and strategies, when practiced, work to build psychological resilience that leads to mental health as well as secure attachment building between moms and their kids.
This month our topic was Finding calm amidst the chaos and we have decided to air that conversation here as a podcast episode so that you, too, can benefit.
This 30-minute episode will leave you with a concrete plan for what you can do when you are in the middle of those chaotic moments with your kids when you feel like you are about to lose it… so that you don’t.
This is our last episode of the season! Currently, I am making my way from Japan through Sri Lanka and France and then back home to Boulder, Colorado. I’ll be back here at Motherhood Uncut in late August with more exciting, moving, and inspirational conversations.
We decided to replay a couple of our most popular episodes between now and then, so stay tuned for those oldies but goodies!
Ok- let’s dive in… I mean, who doesn’t want a way to stay calm in those hectic mom moments?

Today on the podcast I have the privilege of talking with Dr. Nichole Morris who is both a colleague and friend. Dr. Morris has dedicated her career as a Naturopathic Doctor to supporting women who want to become pregnant naturally, and the success rate of her patients is a tribute to her wisdom and expertise.
As a Dr, she combines ancient and modern healing modalities from around the globe to strategically target the root cause of one’s fertility challenges and she supports clients in becoming their most vital selves.
She is also the mother of two beautiful daughters.
Today, though, Dr. Morris and I are going to dive underneath it all and talk about her own journey through fertility challenges, grief, self-advocacy, and ultimate fulfillment. With truth and vulnerability, she opens up about the pain of wanting a baby desperately and struggling to conceive, the loneliness that comes from feeling so alone in this journey, and the exhausting grit and determination that was required for her to find the answers that she needed to finally become pregnant. We dive into the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual journey that she traveled to get to where she is today.
Our hope through this episode is that if you or someone you know is challenged with becoming pregnant, or if you also had a fertility journey that was dark and bumpy, you walk away from this conversation knowing that you are not alone, that you are not broken, and that there is support for you.
More about Dr. Morris:

Today’s episode is a bit different and a bit longer than our typical episodes. I am taking you on a journey with me. Like, a literal journey. A couple of weeks ago, I ventured, by myself, to the south of Japan for a 6-day walk on the Kumano Kodo- I recorded myself through this adventure, and so this episode today is a peek into my inner thoughts, my experiences along the trail, and interactions with people who I met along the way. This is me, sharing me. When I am mostly all alone.
For photos from Kate’s walk, click here: https://www.katekripke.com/blog/is-it-ok-to-want-alone-time-in-motherhood
The Kumano Kodō is a series of ancient pilgrimage routes that crisscross the Kii Peninsula, the largest peninsula of Japan. These mountainous trails are used by pilgrims to the "Kumano Sanzan" - the Three Grand Shinto Shrines of Kumano. Shinto (which is translated as “the way of the gods”) is Japan's native belief system and predates historical records. It overlaps in part with Buddhism, but is, in itself, its own religious faith.
The focus of Shinto is Nature, and the way that it supports us, which for me is an easy place to put my spiritual self. The walk that I did took me over mountain passes, through dense forests and in and out of small Japanese villages along the way.
I am hopeful that you get, if even just a little bit, an experience of this place, it’s beauty and magic, and the way in which nature reminds us all to simply be exactly who we are.
This walk got me out of my comfort zone and required me to, quite literally, walk my talk. I did, indeed, pull up my brave pants. So now, pull up a chair, and join me.

Do you ever find yourself just expecting to be exhausted all the time as a mom?
Have you just assumed that it’s not possible to both be available to your child and also pursue the work that you love?
Do you believe that it’s your job to prevent your child from feeling pain?
Today, we are going to debunk some of the most widely held myths in motherhood- beliefs that ultimately lead to huge amounts of anxiety, depression, and burn out for the women who hold them.
Here are the 12 myths to debunk:
1. Good moms love being with their kids all the time
2. If I wanted a baby and my child is healthy, I should just be grateful
3. Motherhood is just hard and it’s normal to feel burned out.

Today I talk with Emese Parker, RN, WHNP-BC, MPH, PMH-C, about the physical, emotional, hormonal and social transition to becoming a mother, otherwise known as Matrescence (don’t worry, I struggle with the word, too!).
Board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner (NP), certified perinatal mental health specialist, menopause practitioner, and also a mother, Emese leads us into the wild, wonderful, and so often emotionally chaotic ride into this role as “mother.”
This incredible conversation is for you if you are pregnant, newly postpartum, or already along the journey through motherhood.
About Emese:
Emese Parker is a pregnancy & motherhood support specialist, award-winning author, public health geek, mama, and matrescence activist. With over twenty years of health care experience, Parker has been specializing in women’s health since 2008. She is passionate about supporting and empowering women, promoting perinatal mental wellness and walking with women through various life transitions—especially pregnancy and motherhood.
After completing bachelor of science degrees in exercise science and nursing, Parker earned her master of science in nursing from Boston College, and master of public health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
She works in OB/GYN as a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner (NP), certified perinatal mental health specialist and menopause practitioner, and recently launched virtual pregnancy and motherhood-focused life coaching services (tocarrywonder.com).
Her new book is called To Carry Wonder. It's a curated blend of story and art with evidence-based insight, aiming to nurture, inspire and equip women across the four trimesters. By sharing openly about the raw, surprising, funny and even awkward moments of pregnancy and motherhood, mamas can take off their motherhood masks, better understand what they’re going through, and gain resources to authentically grow into who they really are.

Today, I walked straight into my recording studio from a morning walk. Not a lot of planning ahead of time for this episode… just a sense that I had to share exactly what was on my mind.
Today’s episode digs into the important concept of self-care in motherhood. A term that is over-used and widely abused by commercialism. This episode also digs into the concept of “self-sacrifice” in motherhood- a term that I believe is misleading and dangerous.
If you find that taking care of yourself feels difficult or selfish or that you don’t have time, or if you struggle with loving yourself fully, this podcast is a must-listen for you.
Today, I refer to Cathy Heller’s podcast episode with Rabbi David Aaron. Please give it a listen here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2FhOQ26POLuR5bQMosodRk?si=93ef6f2a2c114c2d
