Operating Structures

If your organization's structure is a rigid hierarchy, it will be challenging to make real change. Progressive leaders have experimented with a variety of alternatives, replacing rigid pyramids with agile structures. Three different approaches have stood the test of time, with most teams relying on one particular strategy: parallel team webs, individual contracting or nested teams. There is a hierarchy on each of these paths, but rather than being static, it's dynamic. In this video, Lead Together co-authors Brent Lowe, Susan Basterfield, and Travis Marsh share insights into:

  • What are operating systems, and how do they work?
  • Beyond this idea of the traditional hierarchy or pyramid, what are the additional types of operating systems?
  • Operating philosophies, principles and practices

Think of an elastic band. In its natural state, it is tension-free. But as soon as you start pulling at its ends, tension forms. The more you pull, the greater the tension becomes. When you let go, the band flies—how far depends on how much tension was stored up.  In this podcast, Lead Together co-authors Brent Lowe, Susan Basterfield and Travis Marsh share insight into resolving interpersonal tension.

They discuss:

  • The nature of tension
  • The impact of language in resolving tension
  • Creating cadence for dealing with tension proactively

Purpose

When we lead together, it becomes easier to notice the purpose that’s guiding us, because we start to pay attention to it.  It’s in the coming together, in creating what only this group of people can create that we can find an aligned purpose. But not at the expense of the humans, never at the expense of the people in the system.  When we lead together, it becomes easier to notice the purpose that’s guiding us, because we start to pay attention to it.  Understanding that it’s not something you do once and forget about until you get tired of the company colours or your website starts to look out of fashion. Organizational purpose is evolutionary – it changes as we change, as our products and services mature and pivot, as our clients grow and drift.  Like any strategic intention, it’s dynamic and adaptive.

Radical Responsibility in the Lead Together journey

"When everyone is responsible, no one is responsible” is a well-worn phrase. It’s also a well-worn misinterpretation of self-management—the idea that not having bosses leads to a free-for-all. Nothing can be further from the truth in successful self-managed teams.

Lead Together co-author Susan Basterfield explores the topic of Radical Responsibility in her recent blogpost, and outlines what it looks like in teams and organizations that are striving for less hierarchy.
