Is Convenience Just A Convenient Excuse?

In this episode I answer an email from a teacher who says "I just received this email from the mother of a young beginner that's been taking group lessons for a few months. We have always had positive interactions and he has fun at the lessons. I've had this happen one other time where the parent cites convenience as the reason for leaving. In your experience is this a legitimate reason or do you think there's an underlying issue? I would imagine if I provide enough value for the student and parent, they'll be happy to come at a less convenient time. However I'm not sure what areas I need to improve on to make the young beginner lessons more valuable. Do you have any suggestions?"

In the second half I share some important business lessons from the US elections.

How Much Time Do You Waste? Lean Thinking Part 1

Paul Akers is the author of a book called ‘2 Second Lean’ and is what I will call a champion of ‘Lean thinking’. He did not invent the concept but has done an amazing job of implementing it in both his business life and personal life. The first time I came across the actual term ‘lean’ as applied to business was when I read ’The Lean Startup’ by Eric Ries in 2012. In this episode I am diving into lean thinking.

Guitar Teaching Business
Is offering MORE really the best strategy?

This comes as a response to a G4 GUITAR teacher video message. I have noticed some teachers are offering 'more' by way of extra classes to  students at no extra cost. This is not necessarily a bad thing but you do need to be careful about this approach as it can often backfire. It immediately results in more work for the teacher and may make little to no difference or worse, causes more dropouts. My advice may at first seem a little counterintuitive but it’s based on many years of research and experience and personal mistakes. It's actually one of the primary reasons businesses fail. Time is your most important resource so you need to spend it wisely.

COVID-19 Update - The positive future I see
  1. The coming weeks. - I think the next few weeks will be telling. Either things will get a lot worse or there will be some light at the end of the tunnel. Whatever happens the online world I think will go through a period of rapid innovation. Hang on for a scary but exciting ride.
  2. These might seem like tough times now but tough times throughout history are often when people become the most creative. At the beginning of the 1960’s during the Cold War Russia was leading the way in the space race. It was this pressure that pushed the USA to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
  3. The positive future I see. If you think about it there is so much waste in the world. For example many people today work on a computer in an office. They could do their work really from anywhere. Home, a cafe, a park etc. 80% of office space could probably be eliminated.
  4. Then there is the travel people do getting to and from their office. All the traffic, roads, cars sitting idle and general infrastructure needed.
  5. COVID. I think it’s time to leave it to the experts while you and I concentrate on social distancing, self-isolation and strengthening our online businesses. I am not saying we ignore or pretend there is nothing to be concerned about but a lesson I learned many years ago was this. Don’t waste time or energy on the things you cannot control.

What does COVID-19 mean for your business in the coming months?

In this special episode I'll attempt to answer the question. As a guitar teacher surviving in business over the next 3 to 6 months will be a challenge. Right now we are seeing a once in a lifetime event. The main threat is our medical systems becoming swamped due to the exponential rise in people needing to be hospitalised all at once. Some experts believe 50% or more of the population will get the virus at some point. Of those 15% or more will need a hospital bed. This is going to push our medical services to the limit.
