Staying Aligned Along the Transformational Journey
In this “Pam & Scott Quick Take” episode, we use Scott’s medical adventure after his shoulder surgery as a metaphor for staying aligned during a company’s transformational growth.
One of the most challenging aspects of transformational growth for many top leadership teams is staying aligned over time. Maybe you’re facing this, too. It’s a major accomplishment to jointly commit to moving in a new direction. Everyone can have a lot of energy at first. However, with so many different priorities and constant changes in the business environment, as well as among employees and other stakeholders, even the best-laid strategies and plans can become irrelevant. How can you stay aligned when there can be so many disruptive surprises along the way?
Drawing from both our personal experience and real-world examples, we share how expecting surprises, fostering trust before you need it, and engaging more stakeholders sooner rather than later can make all the difference in staying aligned, regardless of the twists and turns ahead.
Developing trust before you need it builds the resilience it takes to work through tough issues. Pam Harper
This week on Growth Igniters® Radio:

* Why a transformation process can appear linear, but still contain many disruptive surprises
* How anticipating the challenges you may face along the journey can keep your leadership team aligned
* Why developing trust before you need it can make all the difference in staying aligned
* How sharing news about the transformation with more stakeholders sooner rather than later can work to everyone’s advantage

Are You Building Something Meaningful?
We’re joined by returning guest, Barry LaBov, award-winning author of the book “The Power of Differentiation.” We discuss how focusing on “building something meaningful” can differentiate a company and dramatically increase market share.
In a crowded marketplace filled with complexity and uncertainty, we need to look at our companies with fresh eyes before making financial  and operational decisions. For instance, when was the last time you and your team discussed what uniquely differentiates your company? The answers to this question have the potential to transform your products and services from commodities into experiences that can profoundly connect with the hearts as well as the minds of stakeholders.
Barry LaBov is highly focused on the power of this question. He’s a two-time Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, award-winning author of The Power of Differentiation: Win Hearts, Minds, and Market Share. A former rock musician, Barry is founder and CEO of LaBov Marketing Communications and Training. During our conversation, Barry shares the critical importance of helping employees recognize and celebrate the roles they play every day in building something meaningful for their company. This can build surprising outcomes. For instance, he shares the moving story of how employees in an automotive company rediscovered meaning and pride in their work, transforming skepticism into renewed passion and commitment for them and their customers. We conclude by discussing immediately useful ideas for discovering fresh language to celebrate and inspire employees and stakeholders outside the company in a way that builds something meaningful every day.
Every single day, acknowledge, celebrate and discuss what we are doing that is helping the client or others. — Barry LaBov
This week on Growth Igniters® Radio:

* Barry’s perspective on why focusing solely on financial and operational goals can actually limit differentiation and growth.
* How to ensure people at every level of your company feel their work has meaning — and why that’s critical to performance and engagement
* The importance of language and storytelling in keeping purpose alive, authentic, and emotionally resonant
* Real-world examples of how celebrating purpose — not just profits — can transform morale, strengthen stakeholder relationships, and elevate differentiation
* Immediately useful ideas for discovering fresh language to celebrate and inspire employees and stakeholders outside the company

Frustrated by a Persistent Situation? Take a Different Approach
In this “Pam & Scott Quick Take” episode, we share our insights from Scott’s “everyday adventure” of deciding to have shoulder surgery for an injury that wasn’t healing. We use it as a metaphor for leaders deciding to take a different approach to a persistent and frustrating situation.
Just because something feels normal doesn’t mean it’s serving you well. For instance, we discovered that there are parallels between Scott’s decision to have rotator cuff surgery that would take months to recover from, and the decisions that one leadership team embraced as they faced stubborn human dynamics during their business transformation. We also discuss the importance of finding the right kind of guidance for your unique situation.
When uncertainty and complexity are high, it’s natural to encounter persistent conflicts, strong resistance to new strategic directions, or ongoing declines in morale and productivity. These conditions can start to feel normal over time. However, the longer they last, the greater the cost in lost opportunities, damaged reputation, and drained resources. The more committed you are to your purpose and vision, the easier it becomes to take a courageous new approach to your situation. This can make all the difference in outcomes.
Just because a situation is “normal,” it doesn’t mean it’s serving you well. – Pam Harper
This week on Growth Igniters® Radio:

* Why it can be easy to keep on approaching familiar issues of transformation in familiar ways that are not serving you well.
* How focusing on your purpose and vision gives you the strength to challenge comfortable routines.
* How embracing the risk and uncertainty of change can lead to discovering options you didn’t see before.

Overcoming “Yeah, But” Thinking
We speak with executive coach Marc Wolfe, author of the 2025 book Yeah, But: Cut Through the Noise to Live, Learn, and Lead Better. We discuss how “Yeah, But” thinking can impact anyone (including top leaders); the surprising ways this thinking can show up; and what you can do to overcome it.
As we’re all facing complexity and uncertainty, it can be natural for any of us to get caught up in our own habits of self limiting narratives that can impact different aspects of our lives. As a top leader, maybe your “Yeah But”  is about not having time or the right people, or maybe it’s about taking a bold risk on a high-stakes opportunity. Or maybe your Yeah, But” is about taking a chance to develop an important relationship.
What does it take to become aware of and overcome “Yeah, But” thinking? That’s what we discuss with Marc Wolfe, author of the book “Yeah, But: Cut Through the Noise to Live, Learn, and Lead Better.” We discuss the hidden ways “Yeah, But” thinking shows up, the different categories of “Yeah But” thinking, and a story about how a top leader overcame his own “Yeah But” to create a more satisfying career opportunity for himself. We also discuss what each of us can do to overcome our own “Yeah, but” messages.
Marc is the founder and president of Marc A. Wolfe Enterprises. He’s also the author of the book, “Yeah, But: Cut Through the Noise to Live, learn, and Lead Better.” His professional journey evolved from pioneering Apple’s early computer market with clients like CNBC and Tiffany & Co. into decades of innovation consulting, executive coaching, and leadership development. As an ICF-certified coach and INC5000 Executive Coach, Marc has guided leaders across healthcare, entertainment, finance, and beyond—transforming stuck moments into meaningful progress for organizations like Bridgestone, Tufts Health Plan, Ramsey Solutions, and Choice Hotels Owners Council.

How Can “Everyday Adventures” Ignite Game-Changing Growth?
In this fan-favorite “Pam & Scott Quick Take” episode, we describe how approaching daily experiences in new ways can transform them into “Everyday Adventures” that can ignite game-changing growth for you and your company.
As a visionary top leader, you’re already thinking big and seeking out new adventures to help you challenge your boundaries of what you think is possible. Maybe you’ve climbed Kilimanjaro or sailed to the Antarctic. However, adventures such as these can be few and far between. Fortunately, there is another route to redefining what’s possible to ignite game-changing growth. You can deliberately embrace the eye-opening new adventures that are all around you on a daily basis. We call these “Everyday Adventures.”
Examples include having conversations with people you don’t usually interact with, embracing pushback rather than rejecting it, finding new opportunities in a setback, and other ways that expand your imagination, resilience, and curiosity. These are all characteristics of what we call “Growth Igniters® Leadership.” We also share three immediately useful ideas for embracing your own new adventures every day as a leader to expand your horizons.

Harness the Power of Connection to Negotiate Fearlessly
We speak with master negotiator Mori Taheripour, author of “Bring Yourself: How to Harness the Power of Connection to Negotiate Fearlessly.”  We discuss how bringing your authentic self to negotiations can create even more value for you and others.
From our previous conversations with guests about high-stakes negotiations, we see a common theme. That is, in the face of complexity and change, there is no single right way to negotiate. Your unique approach to negotiating comes down to what works best between you and others in the situation you’re facing now. This is especially true in high-stakes leadership situations, where negotiation is at the heart of building critical stakeholder engagement.  So what does it take to “harness the power of connection,” and what’s the key to doing this fearlessly?

That’s what we discuss this week with our guest, Mori Taheripour, a globally recognized negotiation expert, award-winning Wharton faculty member, and author of “Bring Yourself: How to Harness the Power of Connection to Negotiate Fearlessly.”  Mori shares what it means to bring your “self” to negotiations, and how being in touch with your own values can bring clarity and increase your ability to be present in the moment. We also discuss how authenticity can lay the foundation for finding common ground with others, even in the toughest situations. Looking at the future of the workplace, Mori shares why she believes leaders need to be more curious and less certain, and how this can strengthen relationships (especially with Gen Z).  We also discuss three immediately useful ideas for bringing yourself to negotiations and connecting fearlessly.
With more than 20 years of experience in negotiations and sports business, Mori’s impressive roster of clients includes Fortune 100 companies, major sports leagues, leading charitable institutions, and government agencies. Her current and past clients include the Goldman Sachs Foundation, Equitable, Google, Live Nation, Major League Baseball, Medtronic, the National Basketball Players Association, the National Football League, PwC, The Timberland Company, and more. Top business publications and media outlets have featured Mori’s work, include ESPN, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and more.
“The best negotiators are very much themselves: authentic, present, and true to their values.” — Mori Taheripour

How Can You Keep the Impact of Special Experiences Alive?
Recently, we visited a shopping mall (yes, they still exist) near where we live in Northern New Jersey, only to discover that a space that had formerly been a major department store is now a business called “Dopamine Land,” a special drug-free multi-sensory experience dedicated to increasing happiness.  In fact, from indoor skydiving to escape rooms, to rage rooms where you can break things, we’re seeing many more businesses around us that are part of the growing “experience economy.”  Rather than simply offering goods and services, these businesses offer special experiences that can appeal to all age groups.
The “experience economy” can also exist at work.  Maybe you’ve had your own exhilarating experiences  — it could be a breakthrough idea at a conference, or the rush of team-building at a retreat. You might even have a special innovation room to increase creativity.  In the moment, it can feel transformative. But then… daily demands set in, and the energy can fade.  Here’s our question: What can you do to keep the impact of special experiences like these from slipping into memory and instead turn them into lasting value for yourself and your company?
In this Quick Take, find out what we recommend for keeping the impact of special experiences alive. We discuss why the energy of unique experiences, particularly in business settings, can fade away.  We also share three immediately useful ideas for keeping the energy alive long after the moment has passed. These strategies can help you not only capture the value of insights and inspiration but also expand them through dialogue with others and apply them in ways that create meaningful, lasting impact for you and your company.
Special experiences don’t have to fade into pleasant memories. Capture them, share them, and act on them to create value long after the experience has passed. – Pam Harper
This week on Growth Igniters Radio:

* The increasing trend of businesses in the “experience economy,” and the challenge of compartmentalizing our experiences

Facing Four Elephants in the Family Board Room
As you’re leading your company through the complexities and uncertainties of the business environment, it’s likely that at some point you and your team may face “elephants in the room.” These are the issues that everyone knows about but no one wants to talk about. While elephants can occur in public and private companies, the unique  human dynamics of a family business can have especially profound impacts on both business growth and family relationships. In fact, our guest this week, René Sonneveld, says there could even be up to four elephants in the family board room at the same time.
René is a global Fortune 500 executive turned trusted coach to enterprise families, C-suite leaders, and elite athletes. He’s also  author of the new book, “The Elephant in the Family Room: Managing the Complexities of Legacy Businesses.” We discuss why silences in family and business systems are more dangerous than disagreements, and how naming what goes unspoken can transform both relationships and business outcomes now and in the future.
Over the course of his international career, René has served as a CEO, managing director, and chairman for market-leading enterprises across Europe and Latin America. He’s also led global wealth strategies for ultra-high net worth clients at UBS, Deutsche Bank, and Citibank. He’s an ICF master certified coach, and he also teaches leadership coaching at major universities.

The real test of leadership in families and in companies isn’t running the numbers. It’s whether you can name what’s hidden and create space for others to do the same. — René Sonneveld

This week on Growth Igniters Radio:

Leading When the Ground Shifts Under Your Feet
How do you react when the ground shifts under your feet? In early August, we had two minor earthquakes here in Northern New Jersey. We experienced them as noisy bumps that felt like a big bookcase had toppled over. However, as we spoke with friends and family afterward, we found that some people felt and heard a “bump” and others didn’t notice the tremors at all. We were responding one way, and others were responding very differently. That got us thinking about parallels in the business world. How can you make sure you’re perceiving the full picture when the ground shifts under your feet, and lead in a way that keeps everyone aligned and moving forward together?
This week, we discuss three particular parallels we see between minor earthquakes and business transformation.  We explore ways to detect and respond to subtle changes in the business environment, keeping in mind that employees across the organization, including customers, partners, investors, and others, can all be experiencing impacts of transformation very differently. In addition, we share three immediately useful ideas that can help you spot subtle shifts, understand their ripple effects, and respond in proportion to their true potential impact.
Even as transformation impacts everyone, it’s important to respond differently and in proportion to what different people experience. — Pam Harper

Engage With Others Through the Power of Visual Thinking
What image comes to your mind when we say, “with all of the changes over the past two years, it seems like we’re living in a whole new world”?  Maybe you’re imagining a scene from Disney’s “Aladdin.”  Or maybe you’re imagining some other scene. What memories or emotions are you experiencing?  This is the power of visual thinking. But it’s a lot more than a game. As you’re leading to reimagine what’s possible for your company in the evolving world, using visual imagery can help you engage with others in a way that brings a bold vision to life.
That’s why this week, we’re going back in the archives to revisit our 2023 conversation with Todd Churches, CEO and Co-founder of BigBlueGumball, a consulting firm specializing in leadership development, public speaking, and executive coaching. Getting To The Heart Of What You Really Want
As you’re leading for transformational growth, here’s a question: What do you really want? A hidden challenge for even the most seasoned leaders is gaining clarity around their vision. Maybe you’ve faced this issue too. For instance, you might be considering transforming your company by moving into an emerging market. It seems right to do, but you’re concerned about the risk of eroding your current market. And this ambivalence is holding you back from fully funding the strategy. Gaining clarity about the source of this ambivalence hinges upon asking what you really want, with both your head and your heart.
In this episode, we discuss why this head-heart conflict is a natural part of bold leadership in today’s complex environment. Scott and I talk about why accepting the dissonance between the strategic intention in your head and the emotional reaction in your heart is critical to building commitment. We dig deeper into recognizing the signs of this ambivalence.  Reframing the question of “What do I really want?” can often be the key to reconciling this ambivalence.  We also discuss three immediately useful ways to build clarity that aligns vision, emotion, and action. This will help you lead yourself and your company into a more powerful future.
As you envision your company’s future, ask, ‘What do I want with my head that my heart can support?’ — and vice versa — Pam Harper
This week on Growth Igniters Radio:

Make Successful Deals in Tough, High-Stakes Situations
If, like us, you’re a fan of the Richard Donner/Steven Spielberg cult classic film The Goonies, you may know that 2025 is the 40th anniversary of the film.  In honor of that milestone, we’re going back into our archives to revisit the conversation we had in 2015 with one of the child stars of the film who played the role of “Chunk.”  He is a prominent Hollywood transactional attorney, Jeff B. Cohen, Esq.,  known for his ability to make successful deals under extremely tough, high-stakes situations.
During this episode, Jeff shares a bit about his transformation from “Chunk” to a top-tier Hollywood attorney. We discuss highlights from his 2015 book The Dealmaker’s Ten Commandments: Ten Essential Tools for Business Forged in the Trenches of Hollywood.  Our conversation includes why Jeff includes a warning chapter at the beginning of this book.  Drawing inspiration from Machiavelli, Warhol, and even Oprah, Jeff shares a no-nonsense approach to mastering deal-making under the toughest circumstances.
Jeff is co-founder of Beverly Hills-based Cohen Gardner LLP. Variety named him on both its Dealmakers Impact List and Legal Impact list. He is a distinguished lecturer and active writer; he’s authored numerous articles discussing business, technology, and entertainment matters for CNBC, The Huffington Post, Backstage, Lawyerist, and others. He is also proud to serve on corporate boards in both the non-profit and for-profit arenas.
This week on Growth Igniters Radio:

* Jeff’s insights that drove his transition from child actor to prominent dealmaker
* When and how to apply Jeff’s “Ten Commandments,” and why he includes a warning chapter at the beginning of his book
* Three immediately actionable guidelines for “self mastery” so you can get more of the results you really want – under any circumstances

Boost Credibility When You’re Leading Into the Unknown
What does it take to boost credibility when you’re leading into the unknown for transformational growth? Not that many years ago, leaders built credibility over time, and this stayed fixed, sometimes for decades. You gained it by being consistent, predictable, and living up to expectations. Fast forward to today, and it’s a different story. Credibility is no longer something that builds slowly and stays fixed. You create it or lose it in real time.  The pace of change makes credibility more dynamic than ever. Information is available in a heartbeat. Track records are made or broken in a heartbeat. Reputations rise and fall in a heartbeat.
That’s why in this Quick Take Episode, we discuss “situational credibility” and how different stakeholders are redefining what it means to be credible, especially when you’re leading into the uncharted territory of transformational growth. We also discuss the important difference between being perceived as credible and being seen as trustworthy. We share stories about what the credibility gap can look like and what it took for leaders to boost their credibility as they led transformational growth. Additionally, we share three immediately useful ideas for boosting credibility in the face of extreme uncertainty and complexity.

Are You Playing Offense Or Defense For Your Company’s Growth?
In the face of increased volatility and uncertainty, how are you and your top leadership team approaching strategy? Recently we saw an article about this by one of our previous guests, Tara Rethore, CEO of Strategy for Real. Using a sports team metaphor, she asked.  “Are you playing offense or defense with your company’s growth?”  Her point is that while it can be natural to play “defense” (protecting what you already have and minimizing risk), it’s important to balance this with playing “offense.” We invited her to return as a guest for a new conversation with us about balancing these two approaches to strategy.
We discuss the trend of some leadership teams that are over-relying upon playing defense, and how this imbalance can actually increase risk. Tara shares why what she calls  “strategic investing” is one of the hallmarks of playing offense, and how balancing offense with defense can enable a company to continue to grow while balancing risk. We dig deeper with Tara using an example of what strategic investing can look like, through her story of guiding one of her clients to create an internal  “brain trust.” We also discuss three immediately useful ideas for balancing strategic offense with defense for company growth.
Tara Rethore, CEO of Strategy for Real and co-author of the book, Charting the Course: CEO Tools to Align Strategy & Operations.  She brings fresh insights on how to stay grounded while navigating uncertainty and how to make bold moves that shape the future. Tara works with CEOs, boards, and executives to take strategy off the page and into action. Throughout her career, she has led strategy development and execution within global organizations and as a highly valued consultant. She’s known for discovering leadership and strategy lessons in everyday situations which then become relatable examples for her clients. Currently, Tara serves on several private and nonprofit boards. She is also a Marshall Goldsmith Certified / Stakeholder-Centered Coach.
Strategy is a journey that seldom goes as planned, unless you are flexible about thinking ahead | Tara Rethore
This week on Growth Igniters® Radio, we discuss:

* Why Tara believes that balancing strategic offense and defense is not only possible, but essential
* How “strategic investing” can mitigate risk while it also promotes growth
* Practical ideas on how to balance offensive and defensive strategies for your organization in turbulent times

The Unexpected Impact of Sharing Ideas Outside Your Circle
How are you thinking even bigger to discover potentially game-changing opportunities for innovation and transformational growth? While podcasts, books and articles can help with this, having conversations with other people can have a unique impact. While it’s valuable to deepen your existing relationships,  we’ve found it’s also important to make time for sharing ideas outside of your circle with people you don’t already know. When you challenge the comfort of familiarity, you can discover even more ways of seeing, thinking, and leading into the future. This is one of the hallmarks of what we call a Growth Igniters® mindset.
For example, in this Quick Take, we share our experience of attending the first TEDx Montclair event. We discuss how powerful insights and new language emerged not just from listening to the speakers on the stage, but from conversations with attendees that were made easier by the organizers’ efforts to boost active and thought-provoking conversations with other attendees. This led to surprising and inspiring exchanges — reminding us that innovation and transformation often begin with connection, curiosity, and sharing ideas with people you don’t already know.
What new events can you speak at or attend so you can connect with people outside your circle and think even bigger? — Pam Harper
This week on Growth Igniters Radio:

* Why sharing ideas with people outside your usual circles can significantly expand your insights and help you think bigger.
* An example of how attending a TEDx event offers opportunities to engage in mind-expanding conversations that add value beyond the speakers’ talks
