How do you react when the ground shifts under your feet? In early August, we had two minor earthquakes here in Northern New Jersey. We experienced them as noisy bumps that felt like a big bookcase had toppled over. However, as we spoke with friends and family afterward, we found that some people felt and heard a “bump” and others didn’t notice the tremors at all. We were responding one way, and others were responding very differently. That got us thinking about parallels in the business world. How can you make sure you’re perceiving the full picture when the ground shifts under your feet, and lead in a way that keeps everyone aligned and moving forward together?
This week, we discuss three particular parallels we see between minor earthquakes and business transformation. We explore ways to detect and respond to subtle changes in the business environment, keeping in mind that employees across the organization, including customers, partners, investors, and others, can all be experiencing impacts of transformation very differently. In addition, we share three immediately useful ideas that can help you spot subtle shifts, understand their ripple effects, and respond in proportion to their true potential impact.
Even as transformation impacts everyone, it’s important to respond differently and in proportion to what different people experience. — Pam Harper
