Episode 13 with Maike: "Neurodiversity informed clinicians are coming"

Happy New Year! Here's an episode recorded back in 2023 with the incredible, Maike! Enjoy.

*
Maike is a neurodivergent & queer psychologist, artist and podcast host from Germany. And she's also a synesthete! This means Maike can see music, pain, touch and other sensations in colours. That's because of a rare neurological trait called synesthesia. Through her podcast "Let's talk Synesthesia", her instagram account and brand synesthes_a and her psychological coaching service she dedicates her time to raise awareness and help other neurodivergents figure themselves out.

We talk on tangents about her diagnosis journey, synesthesia, our wonderful podcasting community and mindfulness among many other things...

Episode 12 with Author and Comedian, Joe Wells:

"find your people"

Joe Wells made his name as a political comedian with critically acclaimed Fringe shows including 'Night Of The Living Tories', '10 Things I Hate About UKIP' and 'I Hope I Die Before I Start Voting Conservative', in recent years he has moved into more personal material about mental health and being autistic.
Joe is a favourite amongst other comedians and has supported Frankie Boyle, Alexei Sayle and Stephen K Amos.
In 2020 Joe went viral with his stand up clip 'Joe Wells on having a non-autistic brother' which gained over 1.3 million views across Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
Joe recently took part in Dave’s The Comedy Guide To Life! which was used on their social media channels.
Joe’s also has his own podcast called: Neurodivergent Moments
In our conversation we discussed his book 30 Neurodivergent pepople you should know about, imposter syndrome, OCD, gender bias, safe spaces and art!
Note to the listeners, when I interviewed Joe he was sharing a space during his Edinburgh Fringe gigs, so there may be some background noise and I apologise for this!

Episode 11 with Cass: "rejection is protection"

Episode 11 with Cass:

"rejection is protection"

Cass recently completed her double degree in Arts and Law. Graduating with first class honours, her thesis considered the conceptual conflicts in Australian environmental law.

Likewise, Cass’s ADHD diagnosis at age 28 helped her to make sense of her private struggles alongside her outward successes. She’s enjoyed an eclectic career zigzagging through multiple industries: advertising, advocacy, education, and law. Now that she’s survived her season of overachievement, Cass is looking forward to embarking on her unmasked era.

We talk about fooling workplaces as being neurotypical, ableism, masking, the menstrual cycle, being Asian, and how ADHD affects marriage.

Episode 8 with Amy: "I was diagnosed, and nothing got better. […] The medical industry [has] a problem with being honest... It's so frustrating."

*my mic did not cooperate this time! hopefully you can hear me well enough*

Episode 8 with Amy: "I was diagnosed, and nothing got better. […] The medical industry [has] a problem with being honest... It's so frustrating."

✶

Amy Green is a data and systems expert with over 14 years of experience in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, and has held various roles that have allowed her to explore leadership and staff management where her fascination with human behaviour could really be explored. Always one to view things from multiple perspectives, Amy draws upon her personal experiences as an autistic ADHD, multiply disabled, queer woman, using this experience to better empathise with, understand, and help others who may be misunderstood.
Amy's dedicated to fostering inclusion, particularly neuro-inclusion within the workplace, driving her mission to create supportive and accessible work environments for neurodivergent folks. Lending her expertise to various human resources teams within the VET sector, she advocates for education and acceptance of disability, sharing her own lived experience openly in the hopes to inspire positive change for newcomers to the workforce.
With dreams of becoming an allied health professional, Amy aspires to work closely with the autistic ADHD community, providing much-needed support and understanding. Outside of her professional pursuits, Amy indulges in her pug obsession and harbors a deep love for fluffy Highland cows. She loves playing golf with her husband, and for her, life would lack meaning without music, which is and has always been an integral part of her journey.

Episode 7 with Patricia: "Is it the person that is disabled, or is the environment that is disabling them?"

Episode 7 with Patricia Falcetta OAM.

"Is it the person that is disabled, or is the environment that is disabling them?"

✶ Patricia is the Founder/Director of Social Living Solutions and creator of the Family Joy Program.
Neurodivergent herself, Patricia’s vision is for a world where people who identify as neurodivergent are accepted, integrated, and recognised as valued members of society. She aspires to remove the misconceptions around neurodiversity and replace ignorance with understanding.
Among her many achievements, Patricia, is an active volunteer in her community and internationally through the Global Goodwill Ambassadors network and as a neurodiversity consultant to the 2023 Gay Games, in Hong Kong. She has been a finalist in both the ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards for People with Disability. She has recently spoken at the International Conference Autism Network (ICAN), 2023 in Dubai, and was keynote at the OzWater ‘23 conference in Sydney, Australia.
Patricia is such an inspiration to me, and her work is valuable to our community. Just as well, as she was recognised for her work and received the Medal of Order of Australia.
In my conversation with Patricia, we discussed masking, our shared experiences with having an asian background and disabling environments.
I was fortunate enough to meet Patricia personally, and she shared some great advice with me. I cannot thank her enough for her contribution to the podcast and the industry, and I hope you gain insight and learn something! Episode 6 with Charlie

"It's not a fad. Women were just missed."

Diagnosed at 44, Charlie is currently a COO for a large ecommerce business. She discovered she shared similar experiences with that of her boss who is also neurodivergent, and without them she would not have sought a diagnosis. Charlie is currently studying and training to one day pivot into counselling, alongside reiki and accupressure. She works with a naturopath to help her brain work even better, without relying solely on medication. She is a loving wife and mother and enjoys swimming, rain, hail or shine as it keeps her sane and grounded! Charlie led great conversations with me about having Dory moments and 2 brains. I related a lot to her experiences, let me know if you do too!

If you live in NSW, you can find Charlie's Facebook Group for Northern Beaches - ADHD Women here.

--

Raelene is a lived experience of ADHD and mental health advocate and the founder of Not Your Neurotypical Podcast on Spotify. Since being diagnosed at the age of 25, Raelene has spoken to women across the globe with a late diagnosis of ADHD and other disabilities to highlight the raw struggles of ADHD, how individuals living with neurodivergent conditions are misinformed, misrepresented and underdiagnosed. And the importance of finding your community and harnessing curiousity, can help improve your quality of life and improve your mental health.

Mel Harrison:

"I'm really interested to listen to your podcast, I think [...] a couple of things that resonated with me, was that no one is the same, and having a diagnosis is important but I think it goes beyond that and just being recognised and you know, being believed with what's actually going on, so thank you for the work you are doing."

Episode 5 with Brian.

"Have difficult conversations"

✶

Brian (he/him) is a 21 year old gym enthusiast, mental health advocate and most of all, he is a close relative of mine. Safe to say I have watched him grow through thick and thin. Brian and I have a conversation around mental health and what his journey has been like to help him support himself and how he has supported others by having difficult conversations and joining fundraisers. I am lucky to have these conversations with my own family and it is something I hope becomes the norm. Thank you Brian for sharing your story with me and on this podcast.

✶

Mental Health support organisations we talked about in this Episode:

  1. BeyondBlue is an Australian mental health and wellbeing support organisation. They provide support programs to address issues related to depression, suicide, anxiety disorders and other related mental illnesses
  2. Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation. We began in 2006, and ever since we’ve provided early intervention mental health services to 12-25-year-olds.
