Tom Williams COO parkrun Global - Getting kids active

Getting kids outside and active is obviously a good thing. We live in a society where childhood obesity is at an all-time high and studies suggest too much television time may contribute to behaviour problems, poor grades, and even depression later in life.  But are the physical and mental demands of long-distance running safe for children?

At what age is competition appropriate, and what do parents need to keep in mind?

Todays guest, Tom Williams COO Parkrun Global talks about how getting kids to participate in community runs, like parkrun is a great idea and has worked for many years help children and their parents to be more active.

Recovery, recovery, recovery - Author - Christie Ashwanden

There is so much focus and information in the sports world, including running, about what training we need to do to get our best performances and be better runner.

However, there is very little focus about Recovery.

For me, Recovery is as important, if not, more important than the training as i found out from reading the book, Good To Go by Christie Ashwanden.

In this interview, Christie talks about how her book came about and also some of the theories of recovery with Beer, Infrared pyjamas and celebrity endorsed products.

I loved the book in both the scientific content and also how it is presented in a humorous way and from her own first hand experiences and many years of research.

The book is available through all the usual outlets and details found here: https://www.goodtogobook.com

“Christie Aschwanden is simply one of the best science writers in the world. Good to Go is the definitive tour through a bewildering jungle of scientific (and pseudoscientific) claims that comprise a multibillion-dollar recovery industry.”

- David Epstein, best-selling author of The Sports Gene

Breathing more efficiently whilst running with Rebecca Coales

Welcome to my second podcast where i interview breathing expert, Rebecca Coles.

It may sound as common sense, but the better we can breathe whilst running, the better we will perform, yes?

Rebecca Coales is a former competitive breath-hold swimmer who brings her experience in breath training to endurance sports.

She encourages nose breathing during physical exercise for greater efficiency and oxygen. Yes, that's right - getting more oxygen by breathing less! If you've tried this, you'll know it can feel a bit uncomfortable, and this is where the training that Rebecca did as a 5x UK record holder comes into play.

By training your tolerance to carbon dioxide you avoid getting out of breath. Those suffering from exercise-induced asthma will find nose breathing helps to reduce symptoms.

Rebecca is an Oxygen Advantage instructor (taught by author Patrick McKeown) and yoga teacher.

To test your breathlessness and try some restorative techniques for free go to www.bit.ly/breathecourse.

Rebecca's website is www.sportrestoreyoga.co.uk.

If you have any questions or queries or examples of you using the breathing technique Rebecca talks about, please do leave a question in the comments section
