Our exploration through late-era Bette Davis & Joan Crawford comes to a close this week as we say goodbye to the latter with a look at two final offerings from the beloved legend, including her last feature film, the 1970 sci-fi tale Trog. Robert Dance, author of Ferocious Ambition: Joan Crawford’s March to Stardom, joins me as we break down that infamous movie as well as Joan’s final non-genre film, the 1963 medical drama The Caretakers, where she nearly steals the show from the likes of Robert Stack, Polly Bergen and Janis Page.

When good screen roles eluded them in the 60s and 70s, the ever-changing medium of television welcomed them with open arms. This gave Bette & Joan the ability to appear in some of the most popular shows of the era, including Perry Mason and The Virginian. These opportunities also allowed the two stars to take on a variety of characters, including businesswomen, vengeful widows, and even a jewel thief. In 1969’s Night Gallery, Joan plays what screenwriter Rod Serling termed as “an imperious predatory dowager,” while Bette warns a college student of the darkness in her household in 1973’s Scream, Pretty Peggy. TV movie horror was in, and both stars seemed game to get in on the trend, particularly Joan whose collaboration with first-time director Steven Spielberg is wonderfully captured here. While the two actresses couldn’t seem to escape the grande dame guignol horror label, both Davis & Crawford attempted to distance themselves by taking on films they would have done a decade or so before. Although both 1965’s Della, starring Joan Crawford, and 1964’s Where Love Has Gone, starring Bette Davis, aimed to tell stories about complicated mothers and daughters, both can’t help but come across as overly dramatic and dated at the time they were made. After 1964’s Strait-Jacket and Dead Ringer proved to be hits for Davis & Crawford, the image of the two actresses as horror icons was all but cemented. Filmmakers of the genre were eager to strike while the iron was hot, resulting in both stars spending even more time in the world of horror with 1965’s The Nanny and 1967’s Berserk! In the latter, Crawford stars as the owner of a circus whose performers continue to meet grisly ends, while in the former, Davis leads the story of a London nanny with a seemingly powerful hold on the family who employs her. The Mistress of Mayhem herself, horror hostess Roxy Midnite, joins me as Grande Dame Guignol puts on a British accent for this pair of English thrill fests.
