“They Live in Dreams”
In the second and final pre-Baby Jane episode, critic Elizabeth Stoddard joins me for the pair of movies our former studio queens would appear in just before signing on to star in the film that would change their careers forever. In 1959’s The Best of Everything, we see a nervous Joan Crawford return following a two-year absence where she is surrounded by a trio of up-and-comers, all of whom she acts off the screen. Meanwhile, after a five-year absence (save for some TV guest spots and small appearances in minor international films), Bette Davis enjoys a plum role in what would be Frank Capra’s final effort, 1961’s Pocketful of Miracles. Frank Calvillo (Highly Suspect Reviews, Screener Squad)
Born and raised in South Texas, Frank currently lives in Austin and has been in love with movies ever since his father showed him some Three Stooges shorts when he was five years old. Today he loves all kinds of film, regardless of era, country, budget or genre. He believes every film has an audience and is at least one person’s favorite movie. After writing for Sight & Sound and Slackerwood, he now writes for Cinapse where his increasingly random taste in all flavors of cinema (from Rashomon to Mars Attacks!) continues to thrive. His ultimate goal is to write a script for his boyhood crush, Michelle Pfeiffer.
