Somatic Practices for Regulating the Nervous System with Tatiana Szulc

In this episode, Tatiana Szulc, a trauma and somatic therapist, dives deep into nervous system dysregulation and the power of somatic experiencing. Tatiana explains that dysregulation occurs when the nervous system becomes stuck in survival states like fight, flight, or freeze, leading to a persistent state of anxiety, anger, or emotional rigidity. She emphasizes that nervous system dysregulation is more than just feeling anxious or angry occasionally; it's a continuous state of these emotions.

Tatiana shares practical somatic practices, such as the "VU" sound, that can help regulate the nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve and promoting a sense of calm. She also stresses that trauma healing doesn't always require discussing past experiences in detail, highlighting how alternative methods like somatic experiencing can offer effective pathways to healing.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nervous System Dysregulation: Occurs when the nervous system remains stuck in survival states and lacks the flexibility to return to a calm state.
  • Constant Emotional States: Dysregulation isn't just feeling anxious or angry sometimes; it's a persistent state of these emotions.
  • Somatic Practices: Techniques like the VU sound can stimulate the vagus nerve, promoting calm and safety.
  • Alternative Healing Methods: Trauma healing doesn't always require talking about past experiences, and somatic experiencing can be an effective alternative.

About our guest

Tatiana is a First Gen Latina, a trauma & somatic therapist as well as a holistic coach and she is on a mission to help more women heal their nervous systems through holistic living and somatic practices. Tatiana has a background in Somatic Experiencing, a body-oriented approach to healing trauma & rewiring the nervous system where you do not need to talk about or even remember your trauma to heal from it.
