In this episode Joy and Laura break down Supernatural season 4 episode 16 “On The Head of a Pin”. Dean is recruited by Castiel and Uriel to use the torture skills he learned in Hell to interrogate Alastair, a powerful demon they captured last episode, when other angels turn up murdered.
We discuss how we feel seeing Anna again, how both Sam and Dean are bad boys in this episode, how well Jared plays the darker side of Sam, and Sam’s descent into darkness as a whole.
We also discuss the comparisons between the dead angel at the start and Mary Winchester, the Destiel ship, Uriel’s character arc, and why do angels always meet at kids playgrounds?
Joy’s Easter eggs are about the origins of the Star of David/ six-sided star, and the links to magical practices; and how well the Biblical lore matches up to what is said in this episode.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down Supernatural season 4 episode 15 “Death Takes a Holiday”. Sam and Dean investigate a small town where people have stopped dying, even after fatal accidents occur, and discover that the reaper assigned to the town has vanished. The brothers use astral projection to leave their bodies and operate as spirits to find out what’s going on.
We discuss how bad Sam and Dean are at saving the seals from being opened, how whiny Dean is being, and our thoughts about the new iteration of Alistair.
We also discuss how rude it is that Dean doesn’t remember Tessa, and their whole dynamic; how Sam is a big sexy liar; how maybe they should have locked the motel room door before they went into a trance, and maybe they should have had a lookout who can actually see!
Joy’s Easter eggs are about Joe the plumber, and real Grim Reaper encounters.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 14 of Supernatural “Sex and Violence”. Sam and Dean investigate a series of murders where seemingly happily married men suddenly slaughter their wives. They discover a siren is luring men and compelling them to kill their loved ones.
We discuss how the topic of domestic violence is handled in this episode, the LIES Sam is telling Dean, and the origin of “FBI” Nick’s name and how it might hint at his true identity.
We also discuss the red herrings in the episode, and it took Laura far too long to work out who the siren really was.
Joy’s Easter egg is about sirens and the lore surrounding them.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 13 of Supernatural “After School Special”. Sam and Dean investigate what they think is a case of demon possession at their old high school, but it turns out to be a haunting.
We discuss our feelings about the motives of “Dirk the Jerk” in this episode, and we don’t agree with the writing that tries to make Sam out to be his bully. Laura also gives her thoughts about Dean’s gym teacher shorts, and why they annoy her.
We also discuss the casting of young Sam and young Dean, how the actress who played Taylor felt about being drowned in a toilet, and how this episode is actually pretty depressing!
Joy’s Easter eggs are about the most haunted schools in America.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 12 of Supernatural “Criss Angel is a Douche Bag”. Sam and Dean investigate a series of bizarre deaths linked to magicians who have gathered in a small town for a magic convention.
We discuss the episode title, how we both love magic, the sneaky sneaky murder rope, and some of the dark themes that feature in this episode.
We also discuss how Laura’s views about Ruby may be changing, how Dean should have been in show business, and compare what the tarot cards in this episode actually mean versus how they are used in the spells.
Joy’s Easter eggs are about real magicians who died for their art, and lesser known female magicians including Adelaide Herrmann, Dorothy Dietrich and Kristen Johnson (AKA Lady Houdini).

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 11 of Supernatural “Family Remains”. Sam and Dean investigate a supposedly haunted farmhouse, but it turns out that feral children, who were raised in secret and hidden within the house’s walls, are to blame.
We discuss the predictability of this episode, the references to “The Shining”, and call a flag on the use of night vision near the end.
We also discuss the horror and gore in this episode and how it could have actually been a slasher movie, and Joy says “shaft” too many times.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 10 of Supernatural “Heaven and Hell”. Dean, Sam, and Ruby try to protect Anna, a woman who can hear angels’ voices, from the angels who want to kill her, and a powerful demon, Alistair, who wants to t*rture her for information. This results in a showdown between the two sides.
We discuss how the dynamic between Dean and Ruby has changed as he’s very protective and trusting of her in this episode; the relationship between Dean and Anna; why Uriel is such a creepy creeper; and we ponder if the Destiel vibes started this early in the series.
We also discuss the comparison between Anna’s grace being pure creation where it fell to Earth, and the contrast between this and the destruction caused by Dean being pulled out of Hell.
Joy’s Easter eggs are about real documented and investigated miracles, including people being cured of illnesses after praying to certain Saints.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 9 of Supernatural, “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Sam and Dean have to protect Anna Milton, an escaped psychiatric patient who claims she can hear angels and also seems to have psychic powers.
We discuss our thoughts so far on the arc of this season and the seals Lillith has to break, if the angels are good guys or bad guys, we still can’t tell; and our initial thoughts about Anna and Alistair.
We also discuss the start of Jared and Gen’s romance and Laura has found some tea from the set at this time; Joy explains how the writers are trying to make Gen’s Ruby more palatable for the fans; and then we recap what we have learnt from this episode and what we think will happen in part two.
Joy’s Easter eggs are about real people throughout history who have heard the voices of angels, just like Anna does in this episode.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down Supernatural season 4 episode 8 “Wishful Thinking”. Sam and Dean investigate a small town where strange things are happening after a magical wishing well in a local restaurant starts granting people’s wishes.
We discuss how this episode is funny and emotional, but not scary; how Jared had food poisoning during the filming of this episode, which is funny because Dean has food poisoning in this episode; and Laura is surprised that Joy (the American) has never heard of Harry and the Hendersons but she (the British person) has.
We also discuss Sam confronting the boy and how more men should be like Sam; how the character Hope is portrayed, and how it might have been different if this episode was made now; and Laura has a true crime snippet about one of the actors from this episode.
Joy’s Easter eggs are an interview with Ted Raimi about his love of Supernatural and his experience playing Wes in this episode; and some real true crime stories from South Korea and China where hidden cameras and ‘peeping toms’ are a real issue.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down Supernatural season 4 episode 7 “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester”. Sam and Dean investigate mysterious deaths in a small town just before Halloween, and discover that a witch is sacrificing people to summon the demon Sam-hain, and break another one of the 66 Seals that would unleash Lucifer.
We discuss “Sam Hain” (eye roll), how “ganked” is the word of the season, our initial thoughts about Uriel, and Sam’s first interaction with the angels and how he is a bit of a fan girl to start with.
We also discuss how Castiel’s character is developing, and he’s becoming more caring; and how the show is clearly setting up a good vs evil, angels vs demons final showdown involving the brothers who will possibly be on opposite sides in this battle!
Joy’s Easter eggs are about the origins of Halloween and Samhain, the real true crime stories linked to the poisoned candy myths, and the contents of the hex bags.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 6 “Yellow Fever”. Dean is infected with a mysterious illness that causes extreme fear and paranoia, and eventually leads to death. Sam and Bobby come up with a plan to save him.
We discuss the snakes, the funny softball team names, and how Dean is so adorable and vulnerable in this episode.
We also discuss the character of Luther and how he’s been written as a Frankenstein's monster type character, whether or not Frank really was a pillar of the community, and how Jim Beaver actually does speak Japanese.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 5 of Supernatural, “Monster Movie”. Sam and Dean investigate a series of bizarre murders in a small Pennsylvania town during Oktoberfest, that appear to be the work of classic horror movie monsters.
We love this episode so much! We discuss how good the actor who plays Dracula is, how amazing all of the references to old monster movies are, and query whether certain moments were originally in the script or ad-libbed by Jared and Jensen.
We also talk about how much fun Dean is having at Oktoberfest, Laura does not understand how Sam worked out who the shapeshifter was from a dirty tissue, and we discuss the Dean logic of how coming back from Hell means he’s now a virgin again.
Joy’s Easter eggs are about some of the sets and locations used for this episode, the very touching story behind the naming of the character Jamie, and how Jensen was actually elbowed in the face during the fight scene with Dracula.
As usual we finish with our end of episode games.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 4 of Supernatural, “Metamorphosis”. Sam and Dean work with a family friend to investigate the case of a man who is slowly transforming into a flesh-eating monster called a Rougarou, due to a family curse.
We discuss the different ways demon dust exits the host body on this show; Dean’s reaction to finding out about Sam and Ruby’s relationship; and the woman in this episode who is not having a great day. First she is hit on in a bar, then another creepy guy follows her home, then Sam and Dean burst into her apartment damaging her door!
We also talk about this being another episode where Sam wants to save a monster, so he can believe he can also be saved; we question Travis’ motives and actions around killing Michelle; and Laura questions the whole demon blood issue with Sam and whether it’s a huge flag for the series.
Joy’s Easter eggs are about the location of Carthage, and real lore about the Rougarou.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 3 of Supernatural, “In The Beginning”. Dean gets sent back in time to the 70’s, to stop something but isn’t told what. While there he meets his mother, father and grandparents from that time, and has a run in with the Yellow Eyed Demon.
We discuss our reaction to finding out that it was Mary’s side of the family who were hunters originally, not John’s; fun behind the scenes facts about the Impala; and Laura gets very confused by the idea of time travel.
We also talk about how sad it is when Dean tries to warn young Mary not to get out of bed on the day she dies; how cool it is when Dean goes to get the Colt; what Mary might have told John at the end to explain what happened; and we compare the Yellow Eyed Demon portrayals in this episode.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 4 episode 2 “Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester”. Sam, Dean and Bobby have to fight the spirits of people they couldn’t save.
We discuss angel names, Bobby’s underground bunker/panic room, and our reactions to seeing Meg again.
We also talk about how cool it was to see a female hunter, for all of 30 seconds; what this season might have in store for us once we are told Lilith is trying to free Lucifer; and our movie references are on point in this episode.
Joy’s Easter eggs are about whether angels can really pull people out of hell; the links between the witnesses and Revelations as discussed in the episode; and the herbs Bobby uses in his spell.
