In this episode of Talk with Julie Podcast, a mother shares her deeply personal journey raising a daughter with sickle cell anemia. She discusses the importance of medical management, including monthly clinical check-ups, and the challenges of living with the condition without fully understanding it. She highlights the need for community support, both in school and beyond, and advocates for training children about carrier status to promote awareness.
Driven by her own experiences, she shares how her passion for better care and a brighter future fuels her commitment to advocacy. Her emotional bond with her daughter serves as a powerful motivator, turning advocacy into a coping mechanism that provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Tune in to hear how this inspiring mother's journey is shaping the future for those affected by sickle cell anemia.
Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin gene (HBB), resulting in the production of abnormal hemoglobin (HbS). The sickled red blood cells are less effective at transporting oxygen, break down prematurely (causing anemia), and can block blood vessels, leading to pain and organ damage.
In this Episode Dr. Auma takes us throgh the Pathophysiology and the Management like:
Pain relief during crises (NSAIDs, opioids)
Hydroxyurea to reduce crises
Blood transfusions to manage anemia
Vaccinations and antibiotics to prevent infections
Hydration and oxygen therapy during crises
Overall, treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms, preventing complications, and improving quality of life.

Join me and Dr. Otieno as he takes us through the causes and signs of DVT. This is a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein as he explains. Understanding these causes and symptoms is vital for preventing serious complications like a pulmonary embolism. Stay with us on this episode as we break down the essentials of DVT.
In this second part, Emily explains that she was in a critical situation when a doctor told her she had a blood clot—one that was dangerously close to her lungs. She was put on blood thinners for seven months. At first, she couldn’t believe someone her age needed them—she’d always associated blood thinners with older people. But just a year later, she found herself facing another clot, and this time, she knew exactly what to do. Looking back, she realized there was one doctor who truly saved her life, but she also came to understand that her health was ultimately her responsibility. Despite the challenges, she made a commitment to herself: she would never skip her daily walks, no matter what. That routine became a symbol of her determination to take control of her recovery and her future.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are closely related medical conditions. DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in the deep veins, usually in the legs. Incase this clot breaks off, it can travel through the bloodstream to the Lungs causing PE. PE is a serious medical condition that requires immediate treatment. When DVT is recognized earlier, it can be treated to avoid the risk of developing a PE. In this Episode our guest speaker Emily joins us with her expirience with DVT/PE.

In the previous Episode we talked about stroke and it causes, in this episode we discussed about the possible interventions. The conversation made us reflect on where we are now when we look at the Kenyan health system. Building a stroke unit, having manpower to detect the disease and also having ambulances to be able to transport the patients were the main points. Rehabilitation after acute treatment is very important. Dr. Otieno had to get a new name Mr. BEFAST.
Tune in on this powerful podcast and send us your views on this topic and what we can do to make changes.
Erb's Palsy is a condition that comes with difficulties, but you can get over them if you are persistent and use your therapy options. Erb's palsy and brachial plexus are closely related conditions. In this Episode we talk about Erb's palsy which is a type of brachial plexus that affects the upper nerves of the brachial plexus specifically the C5 and C6 nerve roots.
The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that originates from the spinal cord in the neck and supplies the muscles and sensation to the shoulder, arm, and hand.
During chirld birth if there is excessive strecching or tearing of the brachial plexus nerve it can result to erb's palsy. This can occur when there is excessive traction on the babys head or neck during prolonged delivery, difficult delivery such as shoulder dystocia.
The symptoms may include weakness or paralysis of the affected arm, limited range of motion and loss of sensation.
Treatment for erb's palsy my involve occupational therapy, physical therapy and in some cases surgery to repair the dameged nerves.
The main aim of the therayp is to improve the mobility in the affected arm.
My guest Adhiambo Opondo took us through her personal expirience through her daughter and the healing process through this trauma. She explains the importance of having support from your partner and family during pregnancy and even after birth.

Surgeon General C. Everett Koop once said, “Drugs don't work if patients don't take them".
I was humbled to host Dr.Martin Jakob, a Physician at Schwetzingen Intensive Care Unit Department.
In our discussion, it was noted that the more the patient is involved in their therapy plan, the better the outcome in the long run.
Here are some major factors that affect adherence to therapy:
1.Health System (this can apply to medication costs.)
2.Health workers (who have a complex day and less time.)
3.Patients knowledge. (eg. Differentiating Akut and Chronic illness).
What you do after your new diagnosis determines the therapy results.
We have to be deliberate about everything we put out there, our words, actions, because we might never Know how all this affects the people we engage.Listen to Sheryl carefully and let's not hurt people in future!
