Era marzo de 1983. Álvaro finalmente había puesto en funcionamiento la incipiente red de radios entre los frentes, cuando recibió órdenes de la Comandancia para trasladarse a Tapachula, donde “deberá crear un centro de comunicaciones clandestino” para el Comandante en Jefe Gaspar Ilom.

Álvaro calculaba que tenía provisiones para sobrevivir dos semanas, pasado ese tiempo tendría que buscar salir de la montaña por sus propios medios. Era una apuesta de tiempo y paciencia.

Rafael has preserved it all these years, making it a special testimony because everything was written as the events were unfolding. After more than an hour of retreat, the guerrilla fighters sat down to rest while the Vanguard searched for a way forward, as they were facing a ravine that blocked their path. They felt confident, assuming Lieutenant Jorge was behind them, covering the rear. But that wasn’t the case—Jorge had followed the mountain ridge without realizing that the main group had descended into the abyss. That’s why they didn’t notice that a company of Kaibiles—elite troop from the Guatemalan army—was right behind them, hot on their heels. Suddenly, they came under point-blank fire from the Kaibiles. The last thing Álvaro remembers is being thrown through the air by the explosion of a grenade. It’s a survival story told in the first person.

En medio de la oscuridad absoluta y avanzando con extrema cautela, lograron romper el cerco enemigo. Así comenzaba una larga marcha que les tomaría cuatro días hasta reunirse con los compañeros del Frente “Luis Ixmatá”.

Era abril de 1982. Finalmente, el grupo de radistas vuela a Managua y, luego de una corta estancia, Álvaro viaja a México para coordinar la llegada de los radios comprados en Panamá y enviados por valija diplomática cubana.

The day after saying goodbye to Jorge, Álvaro, Neto, José Comones, and Héctor continued their journey by bus until they reached Managua, Nicaragua, where they were taken to a farm on the outskirts of the city. There, Álvaro’s parents, and his sister were also present. At this farm, there were more than 150 combatants who were either preparing to travel to Cuba for training or returning from Cuba en route to the guerrilla fronts of the EGP, FAR, and ORPA. It was here that the future radio operators would meet. In this chapter, we learn more about the military units where guerrilla fighters from across Latin America received their training. We follow Álvaro’s group through their training as radio operators and witness, through Álvaro’s eyes, the signing of the unity agreement among the different insurgent organizations, which would later be named the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG). The operation to acquire the necessary equipment is set in motion, along with the transfer of the radio operator group to the guerrilla fronts.

A lo largo de todo el libro, esta frase —“Fue la última vez que lo vi”— va marcando la muerte de los personajes que vamos conociendo a través del relato de Rafael, con la emocionante narración de Giacomo.

Álvaro y Enrique llegaron a un motel de paso, donde Álvaro pudo constatar que estaba literalmente en los huesos. Al día siguiente, arribaron a la ciudad, y Enrique lo entregó a otro compañero, Abimael, con quien se dirigieron a una Casa de Seguridad.

Con la tropa diezmada y la moral combativa por los suelos, a Álvaro le diagnostican hepatitis. Luego de 15 días de marchas extenuantes, se hace evidente la necesidad de sacar a Álvaro hacia la ciudad para su recuperación.   Luego de tres días de dura y peligrosa marcha, Álvaro y Julito finalmente llegan a la casa de la abuelita, donde un vehículo del Frente Urbano se lleva a Álvaro hacia la ciudad.   It was decided that the Front would move toward the operational area near Lake Atitlán. After Javier’s death, several fighters requested to withdraw. With the troops depleted and combat morale at rock bottom, Álvaro was diagnosed with hepatitis. After fifteen days of exhausting marches, it became clear that he needed to be taken to the city to recover. After three days of a tough and dangerous journey, Álvaro and Julito finally arrived at Grandma’s house, where a vehicle from the Urban Front transported Álvaro to the city.

A pre-insurrectional situation was underway, and the Army’s response was the implementation of what became known as the Scorched Earth Policy.

Buonafina’s narration once again takes us through guerrilla trails and the daily life of the Guerrilla Front.

It’s late 1979 in Guatemala. ORPA, the Revolutionary Organization of the People in Arms, had just made its public debut through political-military actions in the western part of the country.

“Jule” is a very Guatemalan expression used to incite dogs to attack. That same energy fueled the march following the political-military takeover of the Filadelfia Goverment Farm. They had just declared war against a semi-colonial system, inherited from the Encomenderos—Creoles empowered by the Spanish Crown in the 16th century.

The day had come to embark on ORPA’s first political-military action. It was the second half of September 1979. After months of preparation, the initial platoon of Front Two was ready to declare “The Popular and Revolutionary War” against the racist system—a war some also called “The Just and Necessary War.”

It was September 1979 when the propaganda arrived: sacks filled with pamphlets announcing the birth of the People’s Armed Organization (ORPA). The days at El Paraíso camp were numbered—it was time to dismantle everything built during a year of clandestine existence. With a touch of sadness, they tore down the obstacle course, the firing range, and even the thermal spring bath.

It was March 1979, and Álvaro had the mission of training the group, both militarily and politically. Together with their comrades from Front One, they would be tasked with declaring the People’s Revolutionary War and launching political-military actions. Giacomo’s narration and the carefully crafted soundtrack transport us to the cloud forest on the slopes of Santo Tomás Volcano—also known as Pecul Volcano—in western Guatemala.

The episode intensifies with the arrival of Commander-in-Chief Gaspar Ilóm, who, years later, Álvaro  would learn that he was the son of Nobel Prize-winning writer Miguel Ángel Asturias. Gaspar informs them that Pablo will head to Front One under the command of Luis Ixmatá, while Álvaro will go to Front Two, led by Javier Tambriz.

The training ends, and from the barracks, we transition to dancing in the streets of Havana during the 20th anniversary of the Revolution. Faced with the imminent final Sandinista offensive in Nicaragua, General Omar Torrijos opens his borders to facilitate the movement of combatants and weaponry.
