Paradoxerweise sind unsere Städte wenig erforscht. In Folge 28 von Light Talks teilt ETHZ Professor Hubert Klumpner seine jahrzehntelange Expertise zum Thema Urbanisierung, vor allem aus südlicher Perspektive. Er ist Architekt, Stadtplaner und zählt als Gründer und CEO von Urbanthinktank_next (uttnext) mit Sitz in Zürich zu den Wegbereitern des sozio-ökologischen Designs. Mit Einblicken in seine Arbeit spricht Klumpner auch von der Macht des Lichtes, Sicherheit zu kreieren, von Licht als sozialem Werkzeug. Er erzählt, wie die temporäre Festival-Architektur eine neue Art von Urbanisierung generiert und, wie ein digitaler Zwilling von urbanisierten Regionen weiterhilft. Paradoxically, there is little research about our cities. In episode 28 of Light Talks, ETHZ Professor Hubert Klumpner shares his decade-long expertise on the topic of urbanisation, primarily from a southern perspective. He is an architect and urban planner, and as a founder and CEO of Zurich-based Urbanthinktank_next (uttnext), he is considered a pioneer of socio-ecological design. Giving insights into his work, Klumpner also addresses the power of light to create safety, and light as a social tool. He talks about how temporary festival architecture is generating a new type of urbanisation and how a digital twin of urbanised regions is helpful.

How does light bring people, nature and innovation together? In episode 27 of Light Talks, we welcome London-based architect and digital artist Dominic Harris, renowned for immersive combinations of art, technology and nature. He talks about the importance of audience participation in his art, nature as the ultimate source of inspiration, AI as a design tool, and the “Holy Trinity” of colour, light and technology, and why he wants to create meaningful stories and lasting impressions with his immersive installations. One started her career as a dancer and musician before creating light art, the other moved from architecture to design, applying an exciting approach to materials. Both are pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms, integrating modern technologies. Both love combining interdisciplinary forces and sharing light as a central element of their work and what they want to state: Light forms perception, it creates the space and gives their pieces a dynamic, it brings them to life. In episode 25 of Light Talks, we welcome Vorarlberg designer and architect Sofia Hagen, who lives and works in London, and Vorarlberg painter and light, video and sound artist Miriam Prantl.

Everyone talks about it, but what exactly do we mean by diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)? Episode 24 of Light Talks starts with this simple, yet very revealing question to our experts. We welcomed Julia Kreyler-Valsky, expert for diversity management and co-founder of the Inclusion Indicator, which helps organisations utilise their data to become more inclusive and implement evidence-based diversity management, and Eva Martinez, Senior Vice President Global Human Resources at the Zumtobel Group. Why do we dispose of this fantastic building material? Is it because of a lack of awareness? Does clay still have an image problem in terms of sustainable building? These and other questions arise in conversation with architect Anna Heringer, who has won international awards including the renowned Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which she received in 2007 for the METI School in Bangladesh. She has been dealing with traditional building materials like clay, but also bamboo and wood for many years.

In episode 19 of Light Talks acclaimed Lebanese-French architect Lina Ghotmeh discusses her process of having created this year’s annual report of the Zumtobel Group, entitled Windows of Light. For the design, she was inspired to research light’s impact on our environment: Light as a physical phenomenon and a social connector whose meaning extends beyond what is visible – from its origins to the present. Lina also touches on light pollution’s effect on ecosystems and questions energy equity, highlighting regions where access to artificial light remains a privilege rather than a right, remembering her childhood in Beirut. She also touches on the challenge of balancing client requirements with personal expression and shares her sources of inspiration and what her creative processes are like. The conversation concludes with an exploration of the contextual exhibition at the Zumtobel Group Light Forum in Dornbirn, offering unique perspectives on the collectibles included in the book, presented under different lighting scenes.
