Why do we dispose of this fantastic building material? Is it because of a lack of awareness? Does clay still have an image problem in terms of sustainable building? These and other questions arise in conversation with architect Anna Heringer, who has won international awards including the renowned Aga Khan Award for Architecture, which she received in 2007 for the METI School in Bangladesh. In episode 19 of Light Talks acclaimed Lebanese-French architect Lina Ghotmeh discusses her process of having created this year’s annual report of the Zumtobel Group, entitled Windows of Light. For the design, she was inspired to research light’s impact on our environment: Light as a physical phenomenon and a social connector whose meaning extends beyond what is visible – from its origins to the present. Lina also touches on light pollution’s effect on ecosystems and questions energy equity, highlighting regions where access to artificial light remains a privilege rather than a right, remembering her childhood in Beirut.
