A Mental Health Conversation for Leaders

I think it's fair to say all of us have had a bad experience with a leader at some point in our military careers. But what happens when those interactions impact our mental health and ability to get care? How can we advocate for ourselves and others?

Rachel Oswalt is a Navy veteran and military mental health advocate that's asking military leadership to do better. Through her own experiences trying to get support while active duty, she saw how broken the system and culture was when it came to supporting sailors with mental health struggles (which by the way - is ALL of us!). In this episode, she shares her story and how it fuels her to challenge and coach military leaders to help them improve.

This is such an important conversation, and I know you're going to feel inspired to step up as well!

Moving Beyond Miscarriage, Infertility, and Childlessness

According to the CDC, about 10% of women have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant. When you add this to the challenge of trying to plan your pregnancies around deployments and the "right" time in your career, it can feel impossible for many military women trying to start or add to their family.

With this can come all kinds of feelings...shame, despair, frustration, and more. This week's guest, Sheri Johnson, has not only had these experiences, she helps others work through them as well.

After 3 miscarriages and 6 years of infertility, Sheri's coaching background and spiritual training led her to discover a process for navigating the triggers, the feelings of exclusion and inadequacy, and the lack of purpose and meaning.

Birthdays can be something we dread...the fear of getting older, feeling time slip away...we start to cringe when we have to tell someone our age. Rather than living like that, I like to look at how I've grown and how I want to continue to grow - life is a journey, and my goal is to be a better version of myself year after year. So, I'm bringing you behind the scenes to give you an example and normalize continued personal development.

I ask myself 3 questions:
What am I proud of?
How have I grown?
Where do I want to focus on my personal growth over the next year?

Unlock your week with these time management tips!

There’s nothing worse than your workout getting sacrificed…again, to make sure you get work done or attend that meeting. Or worse, when you realize you will be working this weekend to get caught up. 

Take a look at your actual planner and then analyze how you are filling it in. Are you scheduling time for brain breaks? Are you spending time with an “energy vampire?”  Is there a meeting that could realistically be a call or email?  And lastly, decide on the items that have to get done that day and move them to the top of the list.

In this episode, I'll ask you a few questions to make sure you attend to the duties that make you money but also to the things that make you happy.  You'll love the balance this will give your life!

Diet Culture, Body Positivity, and You

Curse you Diet Culture!  When you are solely focused on your weight you will build up a lot of negative self talk and bad habits.  

When we focus on solely losing weight, we can become fixated on the numbers and our bodies. This doesn't create freedom, but keeps you stuck in a diet cycle. And it definitely doesn’t serve for a positive mindset.  Life should be about being healthy and abundance.

 On the other hand, I’m all for the body positivity movement…BUT…it’s a double edged sword.  There’s the argument “If you are really happy in your body why do you want to lose weight?”  In our society and on social media, it feels women can’t win.  Instead, I like to focus on what you want to be, do, and have as a result of health/weight loss.  Want to be a healthy parent for your kids and an example? Or maybe you want to KNOW you could pass weigh ins!!  Your “why” should not give you guilt, it should be innocent motivation. It’s ok to want to be more healthy.

Focus on your health to reap all the “side effect benefits.”  THIS is how you lose weight but not be a hot mess about it!  Focus on the small habit you want to improve over time.  And if you need a cheering section…I’m here for it!  There are multiple ways I can support you…I’d love to chat or see you in “Healthy Habits, Healthy Life!”

How to Create Lasting Health with 4 Pillars

Most people are only focusing on 1-2 pillars (and they're doing it wrong). Learn about the 4 pillars of health that are fundamental to getting healthy and helping you reach your goals! They are food, fitness, sleep, and mindset. One is not more important than the other!  

It sounds simple, but most people are not creating habits in all four pillars. Why does it matter?

Food is our fuel.  And the old school mindset of calories in and calories out, is just not that simple! Let me shed some light on food and how to improve that relationship!  

Next, is fitness.  Good news, you do not need to be a cardio bunny!  You’re welcome!  Fitness should be something you enjoy, not punishment. What is your soulmate workout? 

Sleep is so important.  And I’m not talking quantity.  You need quality sleep to help your body restore and repair.  In fact, one-third of weight loss takes place in your sleep!

Last but certainly not least, you need to evaluate your mindset.  How are you talking to yourself?  What has been ingrained in you from your upbringing? What lies do you need to dismiss?  You can do this.  It may be challenging but you can do this.  And THIS is where a coach really comes in handy.  A coach’s job is to believe in your before you can believe in yourself!  I’d love to chat with you to see if I could have the honor of being your coach!  Check out my program Healthy Habits Healthy Life!
