I'm attempting to cut through the fitness fluff to reveal why your workouts keep failing. Spoiler alert: "I want to get in shape" isn't a real goal, and that's exactly why you quit after three weeks -- every. single. time.
I'm taking you inside the consultation process that separates successful transformations from expensive gym memberships you never use. We walk through the exact questions I ask clients to uncover their deeper motivations - and why discovering you want "physical freedom" instead of "fitness" (for example) changes absolutely everything about our approach. From dealing with knee pain that's stolen your confidence to managing the chaos of work stress and kids' schedules, this is about building something that actually works for your real life.
You'll learn why the perfect program fails without the right why, how to set benchmarks that matter, and the one question that predicts whether you'll succeed or become another fitness casualty. Fair warning: this might make you completely rethink your current goals, and that's exactly the point.
This week I sat down with Esther Avant - personal trainer, sports nutritionist, bestselling author, and a coach who's refreshingly committed to keeping fitness simple in an increasingly complicated world.
We dove deep into why the "boring" fundamentals still work better than any shiny new trend (and honestly, it felt a little like therapy for both of us).
Esther and I bonded over being the "broken records" of the fitness industry - coaches who keep saying wild, reckless, and bizarre things like "eat protein, lift weights, get sleep, drink water" while everyone else is pushing hormone hacks and cortisol supplements. We talked about working with real humans (not Instagram models), Esther introduced me to the art of "compassionate ownership" with clients, and why being someone's LAST coach is actually the goal.
This conversation just about set my hair on fire, and I was overjoyed at finding such a kindred spirit - and I think that comes through. Listen up.
I sat down with coach Ashley Beeman for a vulnerable and honest conversations about weight loss, and let me tell you – this woman gets it. Ashley's been through the yo-yo diet hell that so many have experienced, but instead of letting it break her, she used it to completely revolutionize how she approaches health and transformation.
We dive deep into why mindset work is the real foundation of lasting change, how to navigate those soul-crushing plateaus without losing your sanity, and why celebrating maintenance is just as important as celebrating losses. Ashley doesn't sugarcoat the toxic reality of diet culture or the challenges of setting boundaries as a coach, and she shares the holistic strategies that actually create sustainable results. If you're exhausted by quick fixes and ready for an approach that empowers you to take ownership of your health journey, this conversation will shift how you think about transformation. This isn't just another weight loss episode – it's about building a relationship with food AND your body that actually works for life.

I sat down with nutrition coach Francesca Tyndall @cheska_sports_nutrition to dive deep into what it really takes to fuel strength performance. This isn't your typical "eat more protein" conversation – we're talking about the nuanced nutritional strategies that separate good lifters from great ones.
What We Cover:
Key Takeaways:Francesca breaks down the science behind periodized nutrition, shares real-world strategies for managing competition prep, and reveals why your mindset around food might be holding back your PRs.
Whether you're chasing platform goals or just want to get stronger while looking better, this episode delivers actionable insights you can implement immediately.
Nutritionist Gennifer Strobo joined me to discuss her approach to nutrition, particularly for diabetics and those concerned about insulin sensitivity. She emphasizes the importance of understanding cortisol and glucose levels, the role of measurements in health, and the significance of sustainable habits. We talked about insights on how to set personal goals, the "Five Whys" technique to uncover motivations, and how someone can handle deadlines and special events WITHOUT compromising health. SPOILER: The need for consistency and flexibility in achieving long-term health goals remains paramount and fundamental.

In this episode, I'm talking with Jenna Bernard @jenna_bernard breaking down why meal prep doesn't have to suck your time and life away, and how to make nutrition work for your REAL life (not some fantasy version of it). We chat about the reality that everyone's approach needs to be different—what works for your bodybuilding friend probably isn't right for you, and that's perfectly fine. Also why extreme dieting approaches are overkill for most people's goals, and how simple mindset shifts can make the whole process way more manageable. We also tackle the tricky stuff-- like navigating social situations without feeling like a nutrition hermit and finding that sweet spot between what you want and what you need. The take away? Meal prep should make your busy life easier, not harder.

I had an fantastic conversation with Adam Badger that covered everything from the beautiful chaos of daily life to why most fitness advice is probably making you crazy (and not in a good way).
One thing that really struck me during our chat was how much mythology surrounds fitness. We unpacked some of these myths and talked about why cookie-cutter approaches rarely work. The truth is, what works for your gym buddy might be a disaster for you – and that's perfectly normal, not a personal failing.
We spent a good chunk of time discussing why individualized coaching matters so much. Adam shared some insights about managing expectations (because let's be honest, we all think we'll be the exception and get amazing results in 2 weeks), and brought up some points about personal responsibility and consistency.
Throughout our discussion, we kept coming back to the importance of accountability. Not the scary, drill-sergeant kind, but the supportive type that actually helps you achieve your goals without wanting to throw your scale out the window.
It was one of those conversations that reminded me why I love doing this – real talk about real challenges, with a few laughs along the way.

Let's Talk About What Nobody Wants to Talk About (But Everyone Should)
I'm diving DEEP with Dr. Jessica London @mypostpartumpt and we're going straight into the conversation that makes people squirm but changes lives: pelvic floor health.
This isn't just a "mom problem." This affects literally everyone with a pelvis (spoiler alert: that's all of us), but we're out here whispering about it like it's some dark secret.
The wake-up call you didn't know you needed – We break down the signs your pelvic floor is screaming for help (and why ignoring them is sabotaging your fitness goals)
The myths that are keeping you stuck – Dr. London destroys the misconceptions that have you believing pelvic floor issues are "just part of life"
Why moms are burning out – We get real about the self-care crisis and how putting everyone else first is literally breaking our bodies
Postpartum exercise reality – Forget the generic "6-week clearance" nonsense; here's what recovery really looks like
How to stop suffering in silence – We're giving you the permission and tools to advocate for your own body (because nobody else will)
This conversation is about to flip everything you thought you knew about strength, recovery, and what it means to feel powerful in your own skin.

I'm challenging the conventional approach to scaling workouts in group fitness settings. Scaling often fails to address individual needs, and can lead to serious compromises in workout effectiveness that can end up being somewhere between 'not quite right' and downright dangerous.
Instead, consider the importance of understanding personal fitness goals and the specific stimuli required to achieve them. I'm here to advocate for a more individualized approach to fitness that prioritizes well-being over adherence to standardized workouts.
I'm calling BS on the fitness industry's "more is better" mentality. I see it constantly - people go from working out 3 times a week to 4, then 5, then 6, then they're doing two-a-days and wondering why they're injured and progress has plateaued. I'm here to tell you: you need to do less, maybe a LOT less.
I break down the biggest time-wasters I see: those ridiculous 45-minute warmups (you need 5-10 minutes, max), trying to run multiple intense programs simultaneously (spoiler: it doesn't work), and recovery protocols that are more about selling you stuff than actually helping you recover. Ice baths? They might actually hurt your gains.
Too many supplements, unsustainable meal prep routines, and bloated 'needs' are getting in the way of your GOALS.
The question isn't "what should I add?" - it's "what can I cut out?" Your routine should fit your life, not consume it.
This week on Feel Strong, I sit down with bestselling author David Amerland to dive into his fascinating new book "Built to Last: How to Get Stronger, Happier and Healthier at Every Stage of Life." David opens up about his incredible 47-year martial arts journey and why sustainable fitness goes far beyond just looking good. We get into the nitty-gritty of how physical training literally rewires your brain for resilience, why so many conventional fitness approaches set you up to fail, and practical strategies to overcome that voice in your head that wants you to skip your workout. If you've ever struggled with consistency or wondered why motivation alone isn't enough, this conversation reveals the science behind what actually works and how intentional physical challenges create the foundation for a stronger, happier life.arch optimization, and decision-making before tackling fitness
Hey team! Justin here. I'm incredibly excited to share this episode with you because it dives into something I'm deeply passionate about—the biopsychosocial model that forms the foundation of everything we do at Feel Strong Fitness.
In this episode, I break down why I believe treating you as a whole person—not just a collection of muscles and movements— is absolutely crucial for real, lasting results. I'll walk you through why your biology, psychology, and social environment all play essential roles in your fitness journey.
I truly believe this perspective will change how you think about your own fitness journey. Give it a listen, and let me know your thoughts!
In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Erin Taylor, founder of Athletes for Yoga and author of the new book "Move, Rest, Recover: A Workbook, Your Practical Guide to Balancing Mind and Body."
Erin and I discussed the importance of integrating intentional recovery practices into our busy lives. We emphasized that if a recovery practice doesn't fit into your real life, it simply won't work. She shared practical insights about viewing rest as productive rather than selfish, approaching recovery with the same vigor as training, and using transition moments throughout the day as opportunities for rest. Erin's favorite recovery technique—"legs up the wall"—requires no equipment and only a few minutes to deliver powerful benefits for physical and mental restoration.
Our conversation highlighted how small, consistent recovery practices can lead to sustainable habits that serve us and everyone around us. You can find Erin's book wherever books are sold, visit her website at erintaylor.works, and subscribe to her newsletter for weekly tools, insights, prompts, and videos to support your evolving recovery practice. @erintaylorworks
