You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist intimately explores the human experience while critiquing the state of the counseling profession as it yields to cultural madness. Your host, Stephanie Winn, distills years of wisdom gained from her practice as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as she pivots away from treating patients, and toward the question of how to apply psychology to the novel dilemmas of the 21st century. What does ethical mental health care look like in a normless age, as our moral compasses spin in search of true north? How can therapists treat patients under pressure to affirm everything from the notion of gender identity to assisted suicide? Stephanie invites heretical, free-thinking guests from many walks of life, including current and former therapists, medical professionals, writers, researchers, and people with unique lived experience, such as detransitioners. Curious about many things, Stephanie’s interdisciplinary psychological lens investigates challenging social issues and inspires transformation in the self, relationships, and society. Pick up a torch to illuminate the dark night and join us on this journey through the inner wilderness. *ISSUES LISTENING ON SPOTIFY* - If you notice some episodes missing from Spotify, you can find them on any other platform. New episodes are released every Monday, and all are present in numerical order, so you should always see an episode that has been released within the past week, followed by episodes in descending numerical order without any missing numbers. Spotify has a backwards and archaic system for flagging copyrighted content for removal. This podcast has a license to use its theme song, Half Awake by Joey Pecoraro, but Spotify's system keeps removing it anyway, and demands that podcast creators manually appeal the removal for every episode. This is obviously ridiculous. Spotify needs to get it together.

185. Why Autistic Teens Fall for “Trans” and What They Need Instead with Simon Amaya Price

In this compelling conversation, I sit down with 21-year-old desister Simon Amaya Price, who identified as transgender from ages 14 to 17. Now serving as Outreach and Events Lead at the LGB Courage Coalition, Simon offers invaluable insights into why young people—especially those with autism—fall into gender ideology.

We explore the perfect storm of factors that led to Simon's trans identification: autism, bullying, sexual assault, and false accusations in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Simon shares how his parents' firm boundaries against medicalization, combined with giving him a "long leash" to make mistakes and learn from them, ultimately helped him desist.

Our discussion delves into practical strategies for parents, including the "match plus one" social skills framework, body-based distress tolerance techniques, and why allowing kids to experience natural consequences is crucial. Simon challenges the "neurodiversity affirming" approach that keeps autistic kids disabled, advocating instead for teaching real-world skills. We examine how disconnection from the body fuels gender dysphoria and why adventures, cold showers, and physical challenges can reconnect kids to reality. This episode offers hope and concrete tools for families navigating the gender crisis.

Simon is a desister, writer, and speaker, fighting gender ideology with classical liberal values. At 14, he came out as transgender but desisted after 3 years. He has written for The Boston Globe, testified on bills nationwide, has spoken in communities across the country, and been featured in the Daily Mail, Boston Herald, and The Daily Signal. Simon now is the Outreach and Events Lead at the LGB Courage Coalition.

184. The Best ROGD Parenting Advice a Robot Can Give: Meet RepairBot, a Groundbreaking AI Tool

In this groundbreaking episode, I introduce RepairBot: the world's first artificial intelligence chatbot specifically designed for parents navigating their child's gender identity questions. Trained on my ROGD Repair program, coaching transcripts, and even my own voice, RepairBot serves as a 24/7 support tool for parents of trans-identified adolescents and young adults seeking help navigating the tricky terrain of maintaining connection while encouraging healthy choices.

I demonstrate RepairBot's capabilities through a recorded conversation where I role-play as a parent seeking guidance about a 16-year-old daughter who's binding and requesting they/them pronouns. The AI impressively handles complex concepts from my course, including double binds, parts language, accusation audits, and alter-casting. We explore how to build genuine self-esteem in teens, navigate rigid ideological positions, and handle situations where adult children violate agreements about medical transition.

I address the ethics of AI in this sensitive space, explaining why I created RepairBot despite the uncanny valley effect and ethical questions. With families already turning to generic AI for help—and receiving conflicting advice—I believe offering an AI trained on specialized knowledge is better than leaving parents to navigate alone. RepairBot speaks 40 languages and integrates with the full ROGD Repair curriculum to provide culturally accessible, evidence-based support when families need it most.

Try RepairBot free at ROGDrepairbot.com or find it embedded as a golden chat box in the bottom right corner of any of my websites (rogdrepair.com, sometherapist.com, stephaniewinn.com). Enter your email address to access the voice call feature.

RepairBot Unlimited comes with new ROGD Repair memberships so students get all the homework help they need. Get yours at ROGDrepair.com, or add-on RepairBot separately here. Use code SOMETHERAPIST2025 to take 50% off your first month of ROGD Repair with RepairBot Unlimited. You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
183. Men Out of Women’s Prisons: Retired Judge Elspeth Cypher Fights to Protect Female Interests

In this powerful episode, I sit down with Elspeth Cypher, a retired judge and board secretary for the Women's Liberation Front (WoLF), to discuss the critical legal battles being fought to protect women and girls' rights. We dive deep into the shocking reality of male prisoners being transferred to women's facilities, where Elspeth reveals that 57% of trans-identifying males in prison have been convicted of sexual offenses. She shares disturbing accounts from incarcerated women facing violence and sexual assault from these male transfers.

We also explore the groundbreaking Chiles v. Salazar case*, which by the time this episode airs, will have just been heard by the Supreme Court with early indications looking favorable for therapists' freedom to practice exploratory therapy. This case could revolutionize how therapists approach gender identity issues without fear of losing their licenses. As someone who was personally targeted by conversion therapy accusations, this case hits close to home. Elspeth explains how WoLF is working through the courts to challenge policies that erase women's sex-based rights while being forced to divert resources from other crucial women's issues like reproductive rights and violence prevention. This conversation exposes how language manipulation and institutional capture have created a crisis that affects everything from prisons to therapy offices.

*This episode was recorded September 8 and originally intended to be released just prior to the Chiles v. Salazar Supreme Court hearing on October 8. However, the assassination of Charlie Kirk shifted my priorities and timeline. So while we discuss this case as if I am learning about it for the first time, the episode will air after the initial hearing. Read our mutual friend and former podcast guest Glenna Goldis' take on Chiles v Salazar or see the full case here: Chiles v. Salazar.

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
182. From Estrangement to Advocacy: Lynn Chadwick on Parental Identity After Your Child Transitions

In this episode, I speak with Lynn Chadwick, founder of Themis Resource Fund, about her deeply personal journey from devastating parental estrangement to purposeful advocacy. Lynn opens up about losing contact with all three of her children to trans ideology and how she nearly lost herself in the process. We explore the critical distinction between activism and family relationships—when fighting the broader culture war can actually harm your connection with your own child.

Lynn shares the transformative moment that changed everything: turning off her phone, leaving behind the constant stream of trans-related content, and spending two weeks in Mexico with baby whales. This experience helped her reclaim her identity beyond "ROGD parent" and taught her that prioritizing her own healing wasn't giving up on her children—it was the most powerful thing she could do.

We discuss why trans functions like a religious system that cannot tolerate doubt, the trauma parents experience in this situation, and practical wisdom about setting boundaries with information consumption. Lynn explains her vital work with Themis Resource Fund, which provides litigation support for detransitioners seeking justice through the legal system. She details the enormous costs and challenges of bringing these cases to trial, and why these lawsuits represent one of the most important frontiers in stopping medical harm to young people.

Lynn Chadwick began advocating and supporting parents during her career as a neonatal intensive care nurse. Her story of how her family was affected by gender ideology was first published in the Christian Post in 2019, after which Lynn began advocating for parents both publicly and privately. Lynn has volunteered with the Kelsey Coalition, Parents of ROGD Kids, Partners for Ethical Care, and Genspect. She started a private Facebook group for parents in 2019 which is still active today. She has been interviewed about her life and work including on the Wider Lens podcast. Lynn founded Themis Resource Fund in 2023 to assist detransitioned people with litigation.

181. From Ayahuasca to Christ: Will Spencer on Escaping the Serpent's Deception

What might lead an adventurous spiritual seeker to renounce psychedelics, repent for his colorful past, and accept Jesus Christ as his lord and savior? In this powerful episode, I sit down with evangelist, podcast host, and men’s work facilitator Will Spencer to explore his remarkable journey from New Age seeker to committed Christian. Will shares his background as an underground house music DJ who spent decades exploring psychedelics, including 15 ayahuasca ceremonies, transpersonal therapy, and occult practices like Kabbalah and tarot.

We dive deep into the moral contradictions he discovered in New Age beliefs, particularly around karma and the problem of evil. Will explains how learning about child sex trafficking shattered his worldview and forced him to confront uncomfortable truths about spiritual practices he once embraced. His story takes a surprising turn when he describes meeting Christians at Burning Man who showed him a different path.

Our conversation examines the spiritual dangers of ayahuasca, and explores how Christian faith transformed his understanding of everyday life, marriage, and moral responsibility. This episode offers hope for anyone seeking truth beyond the spiritual marketplace of modern culture.

Will Spencer is an evangelist and adventurer who journeyed from Stanford University and the Dotcom Boom through 30 countries. He's explored spiritual traditions worldwide: from meditation in the Himalayas to ayahuasca retreats in the Amazon. The Lord found him at the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Now he hosts The Will Spencer Podcast and helps rescue men from destructive thinking and find their way to Christ. Follow him on X @renofmen, on YouTube @willspencerpod or via his Linktree.

180. After Charlie Kirk: Embracing Moral Courage and Healthy Conflict with Jonathan Cogburn, LMFT

Just days after Charlie Kirk's assassination, I sit with Texas Marriage and Family Therapist Jonathan Cogburn for what becomes a profound exploration of faith, courage, and finding hope in dark times. Jonathan shares his journey from being apolitical to openly identifying as conservative, inspired by brave voices who showed him there's nothing shameful about his beliefs.

We dive into systems theory concepts like pursuer-distancer patterns that explain both family dynamics and our current cultural moment, discussing how healthy conflict is necessary to prevent accumulated resentment. Jonathan reveals his patient approach to online discourse, treating people as capable of the change he hopes to see, while I grapple with questions of when charity becomes naive.

Our conversation weaves through theological perspectives on human worth, the intersection of therapy and faith, and how Christianity offers a practical framework for living with our flawed nature. We tackle the thorny question of whether consequences for those glorifying violence constitute "cancel culture" or a necessary reset of social norms. This episode captures the wrestling many of us are doing right now - how to maintain hope, express truth, and build bridges while protecting ourselves and those we love.

Jonathan Cogburn is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in West Texas who currently works for an agency that provides a variety of support to school districts in his area  In that role he delivers state-required mental health training to districts, supports rural school counselors and homeless student liaisons, and co-leads a team of licensed professionals and school counselors that respond to crises and disasters. 179. Hounded: Jenny Lindsay Speaks Out About the Women Who Have Been Harmed in the Gender Wars

Scottish poet and writer Jenny Lindsay's artistic career was derailed when she spoke out against the violent tactics used by gender identity activists. Today, Jenny is the author of "Hounded: Women, Harms and the Gender Wars," and her story illustrates what she calls the "secondary harms" of gender ideology - the ripple effects that occur when competent voices are silenced through systematic harassment campaigns.

We explore how Jenny went from being "one of Scotland's leading performance poets" to being completely ostracized from the Scottish arts scene, not for discussing gender issues directly, but simply for defending women's right to meet and discuss proposed legal changes. Her experience reveals the parasitic nature of this ideology as it hollows out liberal institutions from within.

Jenny breaks down what she identifies as the three core beliefs that get women labeled as "TERFs": that women are a materially definable category, that we have rights based on this reality, and that we deserve freedom of speech on matters affecting us. We discuss the psychological tactics of this movement, the economic warfare against dissenting voices, and why competent women across fields are being systematically targeted. This conversation examines not just what we're losing when reality becomes negotiable, but what happens to a society that rewards ideological conformity over truth-telling and competence.

Jenny Lindsay is a writer, poet and essayist based in Scotland. She has a weekly column in The Scotsman and writes for numerous publications including The Spectator, The Daily Mail, and The Times. Her debut book Hounded: Women, Harms and the Gender Wars was published to great acclaim by Polity in 2024, being described as 'one of the most important political books ever to have been written about Scottish culture and politics,' by The Herald, and 'one of the definitive chronicles of these times,' by author JK Rowling. A former poetry performer and live literature programmer, she gained several accolades in the arts prior to her own 'hounding' over gender identity issues in Scotland, including a John Byrne award for Critical Thinking for her film-poem The Imagined We in early 2020, and a Creative Edinburgh Award for Leadership in 2017.

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
178. Understanding Interpersonal Narcissism and Envy in the Workplace with Dr. Nathalie Martinek

In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Nathalie Martinek, a former developmental biologist turned expert on narcissism and toxic workplace dynamics. We delve into the complexities of interpersonal narcissism, exploring how our behaviors often stem from a desire to preserve our ideal self-image. Nathalie shares her journey from the world of science to understanding human behavior, highlighting the parallels between toxic workplace cultures and the biological concepts she once studied.

We discuss the often-overlooked role of envy in our interactions, particularly in professional settings. Nathalie emphasizes that envy is a natural human emotion, but it can lead to destructive behaviors when we allow it to dictate our perceptions of others. We explore how feelings of inferiority can trigger envy, prompting us to undermine those we perceive as superior. This conversation invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences with envy and shame, encouraging a deeper understanding of how these emotions influence our relationships.

Throughout our discussion, we aim to answer critical questions: How do cultural differences shape our perceptions of self and others? What role does shame play in our interactions? And how can we cultivate a healthier relationship with our emotions to foster more authentic connections? Join us as we unpack these themes and seek to understand the underlying drivers of our behavior in both personal and professional contexts.

Nathalie Martinek, PhD, helps professionals build relational leadership capacity and navigate the subtle power dynamics that shape trust, connection, and harm at work. She coaches individuals to shift dysfunctional relational patterns, facilitates group spaces for reflection, and consults on how to make sense of workplace dysfunction. A former developmental biologist, she studied how environments shape behaviour and enable dysfunction.

177. Emotional Maturity and Masculine Mentorship | Dr. Christian Conte and Jake Wiskerchen, LMFT

In this episode, I have the pleasure of welcoming back two incredible guests, Dr. Christian Conte and Jake Wiskerchen, both of whom are seasoned therapists and passionate advocates for mental health. We dive deep into the nuances of mentorship and the importance of genuine relationships in our professional lives. As we explore their unique friendship, I’m reminded of the value of having mentors who challenge us to grow and see our potential.

One of the key concepts we discuss is the balance between ego and humility in our interactions, particularly in therapeutic settings. We reflect on the idea that being open to feedback and recognizing our limitations can lead to profound personal growth. Dr. Conte shares insights from his Yield Theory, emphasizing the importance of meeting people where they are and leading with humility rather than authority.

We also tackle the complexities of dual relationships in therapy, questioning the strict boundaries often imposed in our field. How can we foster authentic connections while maintaining professionalism? This episode aims to explore these questions and more, ultimately highlighting the transformative power of mentorship and the deep connections that can arise from genuine care and intentionality in our relationships.

  •  How can being skeptical of your own ego lead to personal growth?
  •  What role does the word "maybe" play in shaping our beliefs?
  •  How did Dr. Christian Conte and Jake Wiskerchen meet, and what is the nature of their relationship?
  •  What is Yield Theory, and how does it relate to communication and emotional management?
  •  How can mentorship positively impact personal and professional development?
  •  What are the ethical considerations surrounding dual relationships in therapy?
  •  How can therapists maintain boundaries while fostering genuine connections with clients?
  •  What is the significance of intentionality in therapeutic and mentoring relationships?
  •  How can therapists effectively challenge their clients to help them grow?
  •  What are the limitations of the medical model in understanding human behavior?
  •  How can psychodynamic theory complement behaviorism in therapy?
  •  Why is it important to focus on the underlying issues rather than just symptoms in therapy?
  •  How can therapists work to create a non-weird environment for their clients?
  •  What are the challenges of conducting research in the field of psychology?
  •  How can anecdotal evidence be valuable in understanding the effectiveness of therapeutic approaches?
  •  What is the importance of discernment in navigating relationships and professional boundaries?

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
176. Making Amends: Formerly “Trans” Lesbian Mother Jessi Harris on Survival, Family, & Forgiveness

Jessi Harris spent three decades living as a “trans man” before ultimately detransitioning. Her story is a powerful exploration of survival, discrimination, and the complex landscape of gender identity in late 20th-century America.

What happens when the path you choose to escape discrimination becomes its own form of constraint? How do you make amends after years of unintentionally hurting those closest to you? Jessi's narrative takes us through her experiences as a lesbian in the 1970s and 80s, when being gay meant facing persistent harassment, job discrimination, and even the threat of losing custody of her child.

Driven by a desire for safety and acceptance, Jessi “transitioned” in 1987, hoping to escape the intense discrimination she faced as a lesbian. Her journey reveals a stark reality: transitioning was never about truly wanting to be a man, but about survival. She navigated a world that was hostile to lesbian mothers, facing sexual assault, job loss, and repeated attempts to separate her from her daughter.

For 30 years, Jessi lived as a “trans man,” experiencing significant medical consequences including heart attacks linked to testosterone use and vaginal atrophy that ultimately required a hysterectomy. Throughout this time, she never truly believed she was a man – she was simply trying to protect herself and her family.

The most profound part of her story emerges in her detransition and the challenging process of making amends, particularly with her daughter. After years of separation, an honest apology became the bridge to rebuilding their relationship. Jessi's reflections offer a nuanced perspective on transition, highlighting the role of discrimination, survival instincts, and the importance of genuine accountability.

Key questions we explore:

  • How did systemic discrimination push lesbians towards transition?
  • What are the long-term medical consequences of hormone therapy?
  • How can families heal after years of complex gender-related trauma?
  • What does true accountability look like in the aftermath of major life choices?

Jessi's memoir is forthcoming, promising an even deeper dive into her extraordinary journey of survival, self-discovery, and reconciliation.

Bringing a personal perspective to the conversation, Jessi Harris is a 69-year-old lesbian woman from the Pacific Northwest, who lived in transition for three decades before detransitioning in 2017 and retiring from her career in the medical field in 2021. Drawing on a complex life experience, she is now passionately committed to sharing her journey, offering perspective and support for women and girls contemplating or navigating the complexities of gender transition and detransition. Jessi is available for correspondence via email for those interested in connecting further about her story: no1nozz@gmail.com

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
174. Trans: When Coping Mechanism Becomes Identity, by Maia Poet

While I am on vacation this summer, I thought I’d take the opportunity to expose my listeners to some other great content created by my friends and colleagues. It’s my pleasure to share with you this audio essay by Maia Poet. It’s called Trans: When Coping Mechanism Becomes Identity; "When an Identity Takes Root"-- Gender Identity Ideation series, part 1. It was originally published on Maia’s Substack on April 22, 2025. Maia has shared her story on my podcast on episode 114. Breast-Binding in a Bomb Shelter? Maia Poet on Surviving War in the Middle East and Within.

In the following audio essay, written and recorded by Maia, she does a fantastic job of explaining some concepts that are very much in alignment with my approach in ROGD Repair. Maia had hoped I would take the time to record my response thoughts in depth, but unfortunately I’m a bit too rushed getting everything ready for my vacation, so I’ll just say this. The essay is fantastic; we’re largely in agreement on most things; and my only real complaint about this whole piece is that she wasn’t yet familiar enough with the ROGD Repair toolkit to know that when she describes a need for emotionally intelligent, strategic coaching for parents who want to protect their kids’ long term health and wellbeing, this is exactly the kind of work I do...

...Which is why I've begun bringing Maia into the fold of what I'm doing with ROGD Repair. Students can access our first collaboration in this lesson. I’m looking forward to collaborating with Maia in the future. It’s exciting to see how she’s developing intellectually and how her parent coaching from the perspective of a young desister overlaps with the parent coaching I provide as a therapist-turned-consultant.

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
168. Family Therapy in the Age of Estrangement with Lisa Mustard, LMFT

In this episode, I sit down with Lisa Mustard, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and life coach, to delve into the complexities of family dynamics and the evolving landscape of therapy. We explore the alarming trend of family estrangement, particularly among young adults who are cutting ties with their parents, often leaving those parents bewildered despite having provided loving upbringings. Lisa shares her insights from the therapy room, highlighting how political stress and anxiety are further straining familial relationships, making it increasingly difficult for families to engage in constructive conversations.

We also discuss Lisa's innovative approach to continuing education for therapists through her podcourses, which combine podcasting with self-study content. This affordable and accessible method allows therapists to earn continuing education credits while engaging with relevant topics. As we navigate the conversation, we touch on the lack of resources for blended families and the need for more focus on pressing issues that affect modern marriages and families.

Throughout our discussion, we reflect on the importance of resilience, the impact of parenting styles, and the necessity of instilling values in children. We question how societal shifts have influenced therapy practices and the implications for future generations. Join us as we unpack these critical themes and consider what it means to foster healthy relationships in today's world.

Lisa Mustard is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Life Coach in South Carolina, host of The Therapy Show with Lisa Mustard, and creator of continuing education for therapists. While these resources weren’t mentioned during the episode, Lisa has created two powerful tools to help therapists and coaches navigate politically charged sessions with greater confidence and ease:

Coping with Political Stress eBook & Workbook: This 62-page guide is packed with reflection exercises, grounding practices, and strategies to help you manage media consumption and reconnect with your values. You can edit the ebook workbook (through Canva) with your branding and share with your clients.

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
166. Adult Human Female: Maya Forstater on the Recent UK Supreme Court Ruling

In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Maya Forstater, co-founder and CEO of Sex Matters, a human rights charity focused on clarifying the meaning of sex in UK law and policy. We delve into the significant implications of the recent Supreme Court ruling in the For Women Scotland case, which challenges the definition of "woman" in the Equality Act. Maya shares her personal journey, from being an ordinary mum to becoming a pivotal figure in the gender-critical debate after losing her job for expressing her beliefs about sex and gender.

We explore the complexities of the Gender Recognition Act and its impact on women's rights, particularly in contexts like public boards and single-sex spaces. Maya emphasizes the importance of basing policies on actual sex rather than "gender identity" in order to protect women's rights. We also discuss the chilling effect of current laws on free speech in the UK, where individuals can face serious repercussions for expressing gender-critical views.

Throughout our conversation, we aim to unpack the broader societal implications of these legal definitions and the ongoing struggle for clarity and fairness in the discourse surrounding gender and sex. Join us as we navigate these critical issues and consider what they mean for the future of women's rights and freedom of belief.

Maya Forstater is co-founder and CEO of Sex Matters, a human rights charity campaigning for clarity on sex in law and policy in the UK. They were interveners on the winning side in the recent For Women Scotland supreme court case on the meaning of woman in the Equality Act.

Maya came into the gender debate as the claimant in an employment-tribunal test case on belief discrimination, when she lost her job at the Center for Global Development after tweeting and writing about sex and gender. Her case established that ordinary beliefs about the two sexes are covered by the protected characteristic of belief in the Equality Act 2010.

Before co-founding Sex Matters she had 20 years’ experience as a researcher, writer and advisor working on business and sustainable development including on international tax policy, climate change and green finance, and human rights in supply chains.

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
