On this episode of The Xtra Edge Podcast we sit down with Dr. Simon Overkamp, the Head of Strength & Conditioning for the German Handball Federation. Dr. Overkamp shares his innovative, data-driven approach to player management that not only keeps athletes better rested but also significantly reduces knee injuries.
Dr. Overkamp oversees the strength and conditioning programs for all the Federation men’s and women’s teams. He discusses the challenges coaches face in resting players during the grueling handball season, where athletes often play for multiple teams simultaneously. Coaches naturally want to use their best players in crucial moments, but this can lead to increased injury risks.
He reveals how his analysis of injury statistics showed a spike in joint-related injuries in February, following the International Tournament and the European or World Championships in January. In Olympic years, a similar spike occurs in September. To combat this, he developed a load management plan using data from an IMU player tracking system, which has already led to a nearly 20% reduction in knee injuries among his European Championship Team.

Our special guests are Jim Krumpos the Associate Athletics Director, Sports Performance and Director of Olympic Sports at the University of Arizona and Dayannara Munoz an Assistant Coach specializing in Performance Enhancement at the University of Arizona. 🔍 Episode Highlights
Unique Roles and Responsibilities
Jim Krumpos sheds light on his multifaceted role overseeing the entire Performance department. From strength and conditioning coaches to nutrition staff, Krumpos ensures athletes receive top-notch training and support. He also shares his passion for hands-on coaching, bridging theory with practice. Data-Driven Performance
Coach Krumpos emphasizes the power of data. Gone are the days of relying solely on intuition. With metrics like heart rate variability (HRV), coaches can pinpoint deficiencies, optimize load management, and enhance player readiness. Dayannara Muñoz also chimes in, revealing how data transformed her coaching approach. Identifying Outliers
The duo discusses using data to identify outliers—those players who appear fatigued or lack effort. Krumpos recounts a case where elevated heart rate led to a breakthrough: addressing mineral deficiencies and sleep patterns. The result? Improved performance and debunked conditioning myths. The Brains of the Operation
Muñoz is pursuing a second graduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Arizona while serving as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer with the United States Air Force. An MIT and Columbia University graduate with a passion for numbers, she is described by Krumpos as "the brains behind the operation." He emphasized the importance of having someone on the team who can interpret and explain data effectively, even if it means recruiting from the math department. Comprehensive Programs
Both guests stress the importance of comprehensive sports performance programs. Beyond reps and sets, they track bar speed, jump metrics, and more. It's about precision, science, and maximizing athletic potential. Women's Sports at KINEXON Sports 🎙️ In our latest episode of The Xtra Edge podcast, we welcome Paul Koier who is the assistant sports performance coach for the Charlotte 49ers women's basketball and tennis teams. In this insightful discussion, Paul shares his unique approach to managing the physical load on the women athletes he works with. 📈 Queen City Queens: Prioritizing Women-Specific Data
Paul discusses the importance of accumulated acceleration load, a comprehensive metric that provides an overview of the stress being put on the women athletes' bodies. Paul also talks about the importance of managing mileage, especially the day before a game, to ensure the athletes are not overworked and are ready to compete. He factors in cycle monitoring, and how this plays a part in maintaining a high level of preparation for his athletes, as well as how it factors into the intensity of game prep and workouts. This is applied and evaluated on an individual basis, as different members of the team have different cycles, resulting in more moving parts from a performance planning perspective. Thus, Paul has to be very strategic and fluid in his scheduling for each athlete in order to ensure success as a whole. 📝 Fastbreaks and Flowcharts
He shares how he uses an Excel spreadsheet to create a "drill library", which helps the coaches understand what drills accumulate the most mileage, as well as plan practices efficiently. ⛹️ Playing the Odds
One of the key insights in this episode is the concept of optimal practice time. Based on an article given to him by Pat Lewis (Charlotte's men's basketball strength coach), Paul found the optimal practice time, the day before a game, that gives his team the best odds to cover the spread. This doesn't guarantee a win, but it does give the team the best possible chance to compete effectively. 📊 49ers by the Numbers
Paul's approach is data-driven, and he emphasizes the importance of using data to make informed decisions about practice intensity and duration. He shares his experiences and the successes and failures they've had with this approach. 🔥 Join the Conversation

He highlights how the LPS system provides the accuracy of a GPS system indoors, making it a crucial component of their winter training.
📊 Saddling Up Seamlessly
We delve into the specifics of their practice sessions, which often involve split practices with offense in the stadium and defense indoors. Eric explains how they seamlessly integrate data from these sessions, and how this ability to transition between indoor and outdoor training without missing a beat on data collection has been critical for their team.
📈 The Wyoming Way: Quantifying Cowboy Success
Eric also gives us a detailed look into the metrics they use for analysis, including workload, distance, high-speed yardage, excels, decels, top speed, mechanical load, and practice density. He emphasizes that these metrics provide a comprehensive view of the demands on the athlete, playing a crucial role in their analysis of team, position, or individual workloads.
🏃♂️ Ride for the Brand
Finally, Eric talks about the importance of monitoring top speed throughout the year. He shares how they progressively expose athletes to higher velocities, foster competition within the team with top speed leaderboards, and ensure athletes maintain their speed qualities by exposing them to intense sprinting once a week.

🌟 The Big Picture
We explore the immense possibilities and the realistic limitations of data and its collection. Understanding this broader context empowers us to evaluate major announcements from various companies more effectively.
🤨 Data Skepticism
Amid claims of injury reduction and predicting the next superstar, skepticism is essential. Many companies promise the moon, but separating feasible solutions from wishful thinking requires a discerning eye.
💪 Data's Power
Armed with robust datasets, we can distinguish between what's achievable and what's mere hype. It's about grounding expectations in reality.
🤔 Complex Challenges
Football is a multifaceted game, and answering questions about achieving specific results using data isn't straightforward. Factors like player availability, robustness, and contact injuries add layers of complexity.
⚽️ Data-Driven Decisions
Football data plays a crucial role in decision-making. It doesn't always change opinions outright, but it contextualizes and objectifies beliefs. Coaches and players benefit from data insights during rehab, training, and planning.
🎖 Anecdotal Wisdom
Football coaches often assert they can gauge player speed intuitively. However, actual measurements reveal surprises—players who defy expectations at both ends of the velocity spectrum.

The only work required on the part of the user is to attribute assignments to players - a simple process that takes minimal time or effort.
🏀 Shot Load and Other Features
Jonas talks about how traditional basketball coaches might look at a shot map to get a good understanding of how players perform on the court, strictly from a shooting perspective. But this traditional method leaves out a vital facet of performance that some of the best and most successful basketball performance coaches are looking at nowadays: Shot Load, a new athletic performance metric that takes into account statistical shooting data. Jonas notes that KINEXON's basketball analytics platform automatically generates a Shot Load map specifically, the first of its kind. This Shot Load map takes player load and shooting percentages into account to give a more holistic view of that player's performance and efficiency. Jonas also emphasizes how it can give you an idea of where shooters need to improve, and how their load might be affecting their shooting performance from anywhere on the floor, at any point in the given session. This is all done without the need for wearable tech - the software uses AI to track the players and compile the data so that no time is wasted having staff members do so manually.

🎙️ Episode 6: Data Helps Us Micro-dose More Effectively
Welcome to The Xtra Edge: A KINEXON Sports Analytics Podcast where we dive deep into the world of sports performance, innovation, and triumph. In Episode 6 we're excited to have Jeremy Portillo, Sports Performance Coach for Evansville Men's Basketball as our guest. The Purple Aces are fresh off an appearance in the College Basketball Invitational tournament where they pulled off an impressive first round upset of the sixth-seeded Quinnipiac Bobcats.
📊 "DOMINATE The Game" With Data
Coach Portillo shares his insights on the significance of volume metrics in basketball performance, emphasizing the need to stick with it, especially in the first season using a system, to see real results down the road. With accumulated acceleration load serving as his primary volume metric, he also cites the importance of finding an intensity metric to track, and why. After establishing the concept of density as the frequency of exposures to load and intensity, Coach Portillo explains how he takes the data from the KINEXON PERFORM IMU system and incorporates it into his own personal data collection process that he has developed. Using this remarkable process he shares, he is able to see the frequency of exposures for each individual athlete in the rotation and on the scout team, to best evidence which players are game-ready from a performance perspective vs. which players need more development or recovery time.
🏀 Micro-dosing & "Is Backpedaling a Bad Thing?"
Based on the data Coach Portillo collects, he's able to reincorporate the data into ever-evolving training programs tailored to the physical needs and limits of his athletes. With a micro-dosing technique that spreads shorter workouts at varying intensities over the course of a week, he's able to ensure bench players are growing and developing effectively while starters are not being overworked in the weight room or in drills. The Purple Aces' Sport Performance Coach also explains why he hates it when he sees his players backpedaling down the floor as well as why he advocates otherwise.
