EP 19: The German Handball Federation (DHB) Wins Olympic Silver With Load Management

On this episode of The Xtra Edge Podcast we sit down with Dr. Simon Overkamp, the Head of Strength & Conditioning for the German Handball Federation. Dr. Overkamp shares his innovative, data-driven approach to player management that not only keeps athletes better rested but also significantly reduces knee injuries.

Dr. Overkamp oversees the strength and conditioning programs for all the Federation men’s and women’s teams. He discusses the challenges coaches face in resting players during the grueling handball season, where athletes often play for multiple teams simultaneously. Coaches naturally want to use their best players in crucial moments, but this can lead to increased injury risks.

He reveals how his analysis of injury statistics showed a spike in joint-related injuries in February, following the International Tournament and the European or World Championships in January. In Olympic years, a similar spike occurs in September. To combat this, he developed a load management plan using data from an IMU player tracking system, which has already led to a nearly 20% reduction in knee injuries among his European Championship Team.

Tune in to learn more about how Dr. Overkamp's strategies are making a difference in the world of team handball, especially with the Olympic Games as a key factor in his equation.
