Charlie Roberts, a pharmacy student and our student ambassador, recently co-hosted With Trustee Robin Lansman, a lively webinar organised jointly with IHPE and the University of Nottingham (UoN). The event aimed to increase recognition of the Determinants of Health.

What do we mean by ‘Determinants of health’? And does it matter? Charlie started the webinar with a clear explanation of the ‘rainbow’ model of health determinants, outlining the many influences on health from our home, school, work and the wider environment.

IHPE provided a discussion panel with diverse interests and experience:

• Karen Neil, pharmacology, public health and mental health;
• Katherine Whittingham, BSc Health Promotion course lead at UoN;
• Robin Lansman, osteopathy and health promotion;
• Sylvia Cheater, dental public health, nutrition and settings based approaches.

Katy’s shared the project teams experience of coproducing recommendations that will support student paramedics and preceptees increase their confidence in clinical decision making as they transition from learners to autonomous practitioners. NHS England » The 14 allied health professions This podcast is a conversation between Carrie Biddle AHP Lead for Health Education England SW region with Founder of COGUK Robin Lansman AHP and Coach for the training programme.  We explore the background for the project and how it has been designed to provide interprofessional Leaders of AHP faculties and also AHP Fellows Leadership Speaker skills.  The key was to build their confidence and engagement within and outside of their teams. The 5 Modules develop insights and self reflection skills to provide greater Leadership authenticity as well as inherent confidence to help AHPs find their Leadership Voice. The modules are designed for MSTEAMS online for 25 individuals based in 4 Systems of SW of England. This project has also been a team building opportunity, that has spanned over approximately 8 weeks. Between coached sessions teams were encouraged to meet and reflect and then co create their Mission and Vision for their group. |This is designed to lead to 5 Questions they would like to be asked of themselves to help them explore their work and passions, for a final PODCAST interview for sharing on social media.  We have also worked closely worked with 3 AHP Fellows who go on to produce individual podcast Interviews as the output of the training to share on social media with colleagues and others. It has been important to bring out individuals contribution and flare to the fore front of their podcast interview. Interviews that are live can go in all different directions. Maintaining a professional voice and steer on the conversation as well as providing useful information for the listener is key. Keeping it light and engaging is also important so the host of the show is kept engaged and continues to ask good questions.

Do you to make a difference ? Coaching and mentoring have always been important for healthcare professionals. The work is hard and pressurised and although rewarding often has many personal and professional challenges. During covid19 the need for working inter-professionally has become even more pronounced and so skills that help communication and self awareness are paramount. Self awareness and reflection can help in developing Speaker skills that enable authentic engagement with others and help with influencing and motivating others in postive ways.

The balance between being challenging and making people feel uncomfortable is a fine line. Teams get used to working a certain way. Perhaps too comfortable or too dangerous. Either way that can lead to stagnation and no change.  As a Leader candour, when positioned well can help people develop and grow and progress. Health care delivery depends a growth mindset or it becomes a risk to everyone.

Preparing to be open minded and help a health professional get the facts and then assess you from their own perspective to hopefully find a new way forward for you and health make short notes if needed to refer to, what has worked or not worked and what you would really like from this appointment. What needs to change to make a new way forward?

Being a health professional means work can be so busy at times. Taking time out to review is key to growth and progression. Receiving feedback is useful and a good benchmark on what needs work. Providing others with feedback is equally useful for the feedback giver. Being in the receiving end of how it feels is important and is developmental too. Seeking honest and candid feedback from a critical friend who is on your side but willing to challenge is vital to make it all a worthwhile process.

Taking colleagues on a journey with you can create a bond and communicate values that go way beyond the subject matter of a lecture or workshop. Who you really are, what you have learned along the way and how you have grown is key in gaining a following. Be real and open and tell your story to become a stronger leader in health care and inspire others.

12 rules to keep on top of complex issues by pulling together streams of information and allow things to converge rather than get out of hand. In health care there are so many silos and border lines of responsibility that allow small bits of vital information to be lost that inform and help the "system" work. Patients and colleagues all depend on the detail as well as big picture thinking. Complex issues become more complex when loose ends are lost and levels of responsibility get blurred.

Balancing traits provides a chance to bring friend a great leadership style for collaboration especially when empathy and connection mixed with a modest and welcoming personality. Communities and colleagues and our patients need this inclusive understanding to feel safe to contribute and be heard.

What can we learn from social media ? How can it inform health care professionals as well as adding value to posts by others. Transforming health messaging and motivational positive messaging. Working inter-professionally is now vital to help patients navigate their care and offer options that help them achieve the best outcome they can. Shortening the patient journey helps save money but more importantly saves a patient suffering more than necessary. Patients reaching a dead end due to poor interprofessional working leaves them helpless and lost. This cannot be allowed to happen.

What do your audience want from their time spent with you? A clear takeaway message? Knowing your limits....and hearing questions and answering them or even returning the questions to gain clarity.
