After Nehemiah celebrated the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem, took leave and went back to see the king. And when he returned, found all the work completely destroyed, watered down. Tobiah was not even allowed to participate in rebuilding, is now living in one of the rooms of the temple which led to neglect of the house of God. Nehemiah threw all his belongings out of the temple, ordered it to be cleansed and put back the room for its intended purpose.

Why should the people and Nehemiah celebrate and dedicate the walls of Jerusalem? It is a witness to what God accomplished in their midst. They sang and danced on the walls a testimony that the walls will not come down by mere jumping of a fox on it. The walls, the people, the priests and Levites were purified, they used musical instruments.

In this chapter Jerusalem is called "Holy City". In the Old Testament, it was Isaiah who called by that name, later we see Daniel calling it by that name. Now, Nehemiah is calling it twice in this chapter "Holy city". How did it become a holy city? They paid a huge price. First it was Ezra who helped restore the temple, later Nehemiah came to restore the walls and gates. Its security was increased by controlling who comes in and goes out. They called for putting off of the foreign wives, restored observation of Sabbath, no business on Sabbath etc.

Forehead is important area of life. The high Priest has a golden inscription hanging from his turban which reads "Holy to the Lord", the Antichrist puts a mark on the forehead or on hand which is a poor imitation of God putting a mark on the believers forehead. In the book of Revelation, all believers will behold the Lord with the name of the Lord written on their foreheads. The question we need to answer is what do we display on our foreheads?

After the revival we see happening in Nehemiah 9, now the people are willingly making a covenant with the Lord binding themselves to obey all his commands and calling for curses in case of disobedience. We see the name of Nehemiah first, and rightly so. But we don't find the high priest Eliashib not mentioned, because his family record is not clean. He had given children to be married outside of Jewish faith. We don't see the name of Ezra as well, but his father Seraiah is mentioned which includes Ezra in the list indirectly.

When revival happens, usually it is not from leaders to people but it starts from people. No one pursued them to do what we read in the first few verses. ON the 24th day, they are free like bird to go home and continue with their lives. But, we see them repenting, confessing their sins and their ancestors. They are covered in sackcloth, ashes on their head etc, a genuine repentance. That is revival.

After the walls were rebuilt and gates set up, it needs constant vigilance and needs to be protected from enemies who might want to infiltrate into Jerusalem. So, Nehemiah appointed Hanani and Hananiah to rule over Jerusalem. The criteria for selection is not family link, but their hearts must fear God!

Now the walls are almost built, just need doors and frames. The enemies don't want to give up. They tried three last schemes against Nehemiah. Until chapter 4, we have seen Nehemiah facing enemies from outside. In chapter 5, we see problems arising from within. It is devastating to see these problems. But Nehemiah consulted with himself. It is more like a man wanting to go against a King whether he is able to defeat one coming against him with ten thousand with just one thousand of his army. Same Greek word is used in the LXX version.

Rebuilding of walls has nearly reached half its original height. Enemies of Jerusalem were alarmed and wanted to discourage Jews from rebuilding its walls. Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, people of Ashdod they all conspired together to attack and disturb the work. Nehemiah responded quite well. He avoided confrontation, but was focussed on the diffusing the tension, by praying and encouraging the Jews to trust in a great God, supplied weapons to them, appointed guard at low level walls, made the security responsibility of families which are all a bold move!

We see Nehemiah at his best in this chapter. He is a man of vision, legendary leadership skills, very high management skills etc. He divides the whole wall into 41 sections. The skills are transferable. We don't see architects, planning guys, civil engineers. It is just the common people, no special skills in buildoing. They were priests, goldsmiths, perfume makers. This chapter inspired a man to go to Bangladesh to construct 10,000 homes after the war there. Can God speak to someone from Nehemiah chpater 3? yes he can!

Jerusalem during Nehemiah's lifetime was having ten gates, perimeter about 1.5 miles or 2.4 km. The temple and the temple mount area was about 36 acres and the total area covered by the walls is about 90 acres. It had to be rebuilt only in few places where ever it was breached. When he had the letter from the King, the tables were turned. What do I mean? A previous Artaxerxes has issued an order to stop rebuilding. Now, he has a letter to override it.

An exile serving in the most powerful and influential position is like Jesus Christ humbling himself and coming like a man.
