What does it mean to look at your city through your experience? In the first part of her narrative, Nasreen looks at the metropolis of Delhi from the terrace of her house in Kashmiri Gate, the only space where she can move freely. She takes us through her private and her public as she thinks about her friendships, her various rendezvous, and her desires standing at the top of her terrace. Other parts of the city are oblivious to her, but she can talk about her dreams under the shadow of Jama Masjid.

Space is one of her biggest negotiations; Nasreen often says that she looks at the gaps and starts creating herself from there. Maybe one such gap structurally and architecturally is her chhat.

Nasreen has participated in the Travel Log programme with The Third Eye for its City Edition. The Travel Log mentored 13 writers and image-makers from across India’s bylanes, who reimagine the idea of the city through a feminist lens.

Preparing for her twelfth standard examination, Nasreen aspires to be a doctor some days and a fashion designer on the others. Nasreen composed her two audio episodes from the terrace of Old Delhi and fields of Kolkata.

ये पुरानी दिल्ली की छत से दुनिया को नापने की ख्वाहिश रखती एक लड़की के किस्सा है. नसरीन की ख्वाहिशें दुनिया के ओर-छोर को पकड़ लेने की हैं. 20 साल की नसरीन, दिल्ली शहर को अपनी छत से देख रही है क्योंकि पूरे शहर में यही वो एक जगह है जो उसे अपनी लगती है, जहां वो कभी भी आ-जा सकती है. जिस महानगर में सांप की तरह तेज़ी से भागती मेट्रो मिनटों में एक जगह से दूसरी जगह पहुंचा देती है, वहीं नसरीन के लिए उसका शहर उसकी पहुंच से बहुत दूर है. उसके कई कोने उसके लिए लगभग अंजान हैं. हां, उसे जामा मस्जिद के बारे में मालूम है क्योंकि वो उसकी छत से दिखाई देती है.

कैसा होता है अपने शहर को इस तरह देखना और समझना? पुरानी दिल्ली की उस छत से उसका क्या रिश्ता है जहां रह-रह कर उसे कोलकाता की याद आती है? कैसा है नसरीन की आंखों में ये शहर-ए-दिल्ली? सुनें खुद नसरीन की ज़ुबानी.

नसरीन, द थर्ड आई सिटी संस्करण के ‘ट्रैवल लोग’ लेख का एक हिस्सा हैं. शहर को देखने की हमारी इस यात्रा का एक बड़ा हिस्सा हमारे 13 ट्रैवल लोग हैं जिनके ज़रिए हम भारत के अलग-अलग कोने से शहरों, कस्बों और गांवों के उनके अनुभवों एवं नज़रियों को जानने और समझने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं.

It is housed in the Centre for Criminology and Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

“Baba, how does one become a Bayen (witch)?” Bhagirath asks his father Malinder near the dead lake as the shadow of his estranged mother looms over him. The recollecting of who his mother was and how she was ostracized as a witch from the Dom community in this story by Mahasweta Devi, is the unfolding of the myth of Bayen and the reality of witch-hunt. What emerges in the exchange between father and son, is the painting of Chaandidasi Gangadasi Bayen and her inner landscape (mann). We meet Chaandi through her son’s eyes and it is in this telling that the witch-hunt becomes more than a news report.

The fictive nature allows the story to be a reflective medium, for us to feel and imagine Chandi, Malinder and Bhagirath as they navigate through all that goes into the making of a witch.

This story was originally written in Bengali by an activist and writer Mahashweta Devi in 1976. This audio adaptation in Hindi is from the English version of the story, translated by Mahua Bhattacharya, published by Katha in the anthology, Separate Journeys.

“बाबा, कोई डायन कैसे बनती है?” सूखी झील के किनारे खड़े होकर भगीरथ जब यह सवाल अपने पिता मलिंदर से पूछता है उस वक्त उसकी बिछड़ी हुई मां की परछाई उसके ऊपर मंडरा रही होती है। महाश्वेता देवी, की कहानी बायन में भगीरथ अपनी मां को याद करता है और यह जानने की कोशिश करता है कि कैसे उन्हें डोम समुदाय ने बायन (डायन) कहकर अलग कर दिया. यह कहानी बायन के मिथक और डायन प्रथा की सच्चाई को सामने लाने का काम करती है. पिता और बेटे की बातचीत से भगीरथ की मां चंडीदासी गंगादासी का एक चित्र उभरता और उसके मन के भीतर की दुनिया की भी झलक मिलती है. हम उसे, उसके बेटे की नज़र से देखते हैं, और यहीं से डायन प्रथा सिर्फ़ एक खबर नहीं रह जाती, बल्कि एक ऐसी कहानी बनती है जो हमें महसूस करने और सोचने पर मजबूर करती है।

‘बायन’ कहानी सुप्रसिद्ध लेखिका महाश्वेता देवी द्वारा लिखी गई है. 1976 में बांग्ला में प्रकाशित इस कहानी का अंग्रज़ी अनुवाद महुआ भट्टाचार्य ने किया है जो कथा द्वारा प्रकाशित संग्रह "सेपरेट जर्नीज़" में शामिल है. ऑडियो के लिए इसका अंग्रज़ी से हिन्दी अनुवाद माधुरी आडवाणी ने किया है.

My workplace is a prison. My client is the prisoner. Who am I? There are many kinds of social workers, but the kind that works in prisons is often asked, "Why would anyone work for prisoners?" "Is my son doing okay? Ask him to come meet me next week." "Madam, there is no vacancy in the shelter home, especially for a mentally disabled woman. Now what to do?" A social worker spends her days going in and out of prisons, shelter homes, and courts answering these and many more questions. As the person who mediates between the criminal justice system and a woman 'caught' by the system, answering these questions, and making the system legible is a part of her work. But what questions does she carry with her? How does she manage to see the human behind the crime? What goes on inside the head of someone who is at the heart of the criminal justice system?

Over the last 10 months, we have been conducting writing workshops with 5 social workers from Prayas, a field action project which does social work intervention in the Criminal Justice System. It is housed in the Centre for Criminology and Justice in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). This podcast features the letters that emerged from the prompt : "If you could write a letter to anyone, who would you write to and what is it that you want to tell them?"

मैं जेल के भीतर काम करती हूं. मैं जिनके साथ काम करती हूं वे कैदी है. तो मैं क्या हूं? सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता भी कई तरह के होते हैं, जो अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों में काम करते हैं. पर, अक्सर जेल के भीतर काम करने वाले सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं से पूछा जाता है कि, “कोई जेल में क्यों काम करना चाहेगा?” जेल को लेकर हमारी बहुत सारी धारणाएं हैं, जो आमतौर पर अच्छी नहीं होतीं. पर, सच ये है कि हम जेल के बारे में बहुत कम जानते हैं. जेल के साथ जुड़ी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता का समय जेल के भीतर और बाहर, शेल्टर होम और कोर्ट परिसरों में सवालों और जवाबों के बीच गुज़रता है. अक्सर ये परिवार, महिला और आपराधिक न्याय व्यवस्था के बीच पुल का काम करती हैं. लेकिन खुद वे अपने भीतर किन सवालों से रू-ब-रू होती हैं? क्या है जो उन्हें इस काम से जोड़े रखता है? वे अपराध को किस तरह देखती हैं? जेल के भीतर-बाहर वे किस तरह के ऊहापोह में फंसी होती हैं? इसका जवाब हम भी जानना चाहते थे.

द थर्ड आई टीम ने प्रयास संस्था के साथ जुड़ी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं के साथ मिलकर इन जवाबों को जानने की कोशिश की. प्रयास, टाटा सामाजिक विज्ञान संस्थान (TISS) का फ़ील्ड एक्शन प्रोजेक्ट है जो आपराधिक न्याय व्यवस्था के क्षेत्र में सामाजिक कार्य करती है.पिछले 10 महीनों में हमने प्रयास संस्था के साथ काम करने वाली पांच सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं के साथ मिलकर जेल के भीतर सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं की उपस्थिति, उनका काम, जेल के साथ उनका क्या रिश्ता है जैसे तमाम पहलुओं को जानने-समझने का काम किया. हमने साथ मिलकर कई कार्यशालाएं की और जो सामने आया उसे हम आपके साथ साझा कर रहे हैं. इस पॉडकास्ट में हम सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं द्वारा लिखी गई चिट्ठियों को साझा कर रहे हैं. हमने जब उनसे कहा कि, ‘अगर आपको किसी को चिट्ठी लिखनी हो तो आप वो चिट्ठी किसे लिखेंगी, और क्या उसमें क्या लिखेंगी..?’ जानना चाहते हैं कि उन्होंने क्या लिखा? सुनिए पॉडकास्ट ‘तुम्हारे नाम (लेटर्स फ्रॉम द सिस्टम)’

The easiest thing to tell a woman in a violent marriage is to just leave. But is leaving always that simple? From financial vulnerabilities to a loss of kinships, to a turbulent clash of hope and fear, to a complex interplay of love and desire, the decision to not leave are also stories that need to be heard. In this story, a caseworker walks us through her Sunday, that day of the week when she takes her son to visit her husband's village. What awaits her there are the probing questions of neighbours as well as the calming presence of her best friend - a Mahua tree.

In this new episode of Bolti Kahaniyan, Dipta Bhog narrates ‘Hekdi’, a story by writer Vijaydan Detha. This story is taken from the Hindi translation of his anthology ‘Batan Ri Phulwadi’ published by Rajasthani Granthagar. This story was told by the river to the waves, the waves to the shores, the shores to the winds, the winds to Biiji and by Bijji to us. Bijji, aka Vijaydan Detha, is a folk storyteller in the village and has a treasure trove of Rajasthan’s folktales.

In the story, when a washerwoman helps him, Thakur starts swearing at her instead of being grateful. Soon enough, Thakur’s pride begins to flow down the river, just as he does.

बोलती कहानियां के इस नए 6वें एपिसोड में दिप्ता भोग से सुनिए लेखक विजयदान देथा की कहानी ‘हेकड़ी’. यह कहानी उनके संग्रह ‘बातां री फुलवाड़ी’ के हिंदी अनुवाद से ली गई है जिसके प्रकाशक राजस्थानी ग्रंथागार हैं. यह कहानी नदी ने लहरों से कही, लहरों ने किनारों से, किनारों ने हवाओं से, हवाओं ने बिज्जी से और बिज्जी ने हमसे कही. बिज्जी यानी विजयदान देथा गांव-ढाणी और लोक के कथाकार हैं. उनके पास राजस्थान की लोककथाओं का खज़ाना है.

हेकड़ी कहानी में धोबिन की मदद के बावजूद उसका शुक्रिया अदा करना तो दूर ठाकुर हेकड़ी दिखाते हुए उसे गाली देने लगता है. ठाकुर का दंभ भी नदी के पानी में वैसे ही बहता चला गया जैसे खुद ठाकुर!

Savarnas don’t know caste—the same way a fish does not know water. When you breathe, see, feel, and thrive within a system, it is difficult to notice it, let alone know it. How does a fish then know water? By starting to know itself, of course.

When Rohan chooses this way to learn about caste, he ends up learning a lot about himself. As Rohan and his friends open up about their experiences of caste, caste moves beyond titles and reservations and starts becoming like water—shape-shifting, yet ever-present.

शहरों, महानगरों में रहते हुए जब हम काम या पढ़ने-लिखने की जगहों, दोस्तों की महफिलों में ये कहते हैं कि, ‘यहां जाति कहां हैं? हम तो किसी तरह का भेद-भाव नहीं करते.’ उस वक्त हम यह भूल जाते हैं कि यहां तक पहुंचने में कौन-कौन मेरे साथ चल रहा था? उनमें किस-किस जाति के लोग शामिल थे? क्या ऐसा था कि स्कूल से लेकर दफ्तर तक मुझे हर जगह अपने जैसे विशेषाधिकार प्राप्त जाति के लोग ही मिले? तो, निम्न जाति के लोग कहां हैं? उस वक्त ज़रूरत बस निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की होती है. आपने कभी ये करके देखा है? मुम्बई, महाराष्ट्र के रहने वाले रोहन के लिए भी अपने सरनेम पर गौरव महसूस करना और आरक्षण का विरोध कर रिज़र्व श्रेणी की जातियों को अपनी परेशानी का कारण बताना बहुत आसान था. लेकिन, एक फेलोशिप पर काम करने के दौरान जब रोहन ने निगाह उठाकर अपने आसपास देखने की कोशिश की तब उसे जाति और उससे जुड़े विशेषाधिकारों के बारे में पता चला. इस प्रक्रिया में रोहन ने जाति के बारे में जितना जाना उतना ही बचपन से भर दी गई बनी-बनाई धारणाओं के पहाड़ को तोड़ने में उसे मदद मिली.

इस पॉडकास्ट के ज़रिए रोहन और अलग-अलग राज्यों से आने वाले उसके दोस्त जाति के अपने अनुभवों, उसका सामना, उससे प्राप्त सुविधाओं और पहचान के बारे में अपनी बात रख रहे हैं.

When Muskan said “Hamare yahaan yeh sab chalta hi nahi hai” (These things aren’t allowed in our areas), we couldn’t help but notice that she said it for feeling love as well as anger. Shubhangani who had joined the zoom call from Kekri, Rajasthan chimed in by saying that she feels pushed around, like a football, by elders. If there is no space to express and feel either love or anger, then what does the heart do? Listen to these adolescent voices as they tell us exactly as their heart feels.

‘Mera Chashma, Mere Rules’, a three-episode podcast produced by The Third Eye in collaboration with Partners for Law in Development (PLD), brought 4 girls—between the ages of 18–20, hailing from different religions, states (Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh), social and familial setups—to discuss the range of adolescent experiences which seldom become the subject of policy discussion.

ज़ूम कॉल पर बातों-बातों में जब मुस्कान ने कहा, “हमारे यहां तो ये सब चलता ही नहीं है” तो हमें थोड़ा समय लगा यह समझने में कि मुस्कान यहां प्यार करने और साथ ही गुस्सा करने की बात कर रही है. शुभांगणी जो राजस्थान के केकरी ज़िले से जुड़ रही थी उसने मुस्कान की बातों को आगे बढ़ाते हुए कहा कि मुझे तो लगता है कि बड़ों के लिए हम फुटबॉल हैं! जब इन किशोर दिलों के पास प्यार या गुस्सा दिखाने के लिए कोई जगह नहीं होती तो ये क्या करते हैं? इनके दिल की बात कौन सुनता है? आइए, साथ मिलकर सुनते हैं इन किशोर दिलों की आवाज़ें जहां वे खुलकर बात कह रही हैं.

In feminist organisations and within the academic discourse, we sit with the term ‘safe space’ quite often and roll it in our mouth to reiterate how multifarious and ever changing that term is. But when we asked Muskan and Shomya what it means to them and where they feel the most at home, they responded that these were spaces they have created away from home. 20-year-old Muskan from Samastipur, Bihar and 19-year-old Shomya from Thane, Maharashtra joined this conversation on a Zoom call from their safe spaces where the former had children reading in the background and the latter had a group of friends moving in and out of the computer room. Meet them as they entrust us with the tale of how this space came to be.

नारीवादी संस्थाओं और अकादमिक बातचीत में ‘सुरक्षित जगह’ के बारे में अक्सर बात की जाती है. भिन्न मौकों पर हम इस बात को दोहराते हैं कि इस लफ्ज़ के माने अलग-अलग लोगों के लिए, और अलग-अलग वक़्त पर कितने मुख्तलिफ़ रहे हैं. कुछ ऐसा ही सवाल हमने मुस्कान और शोम्या से पूछा कि इस लफ्ज़ का उनके लिए क्या मतलब है? और कौन सी जगह पर उन्हें सबसे ज़्यादा घर जैसा अहसास होता है, जहां वे आराम और सुकून से रह सकती हैं? तो, उन्होंने बताया कि ये वे जगहें हैं जो उन्होंने अपने घर से दूर बनाई हैं. समस्तीपुर, बिहार की रहनेवाली 20 साल की मुस्कान और महाराष्ट्र ठाणे से 19 साल की शोम्या ने अपनी सुरक्षित जगह से ज़ूम कॉल पर इस बातचीत में हिस्सा लिया. जहां मुस्कान के पीछे से बच्चों से पढ़ने की आवाज़ आ रही थी. और शोम्या के दोस्त लगातार कंप्यूटर रूम से आ-जा रहे थे. आइए उनसे सुनें कि कैसे ये जगह उनके लिए सुरक्षित जगह बन गई.

“Tumhari chahat kya hai? Tum kya chahti ho?” (What do you desire?) When was the last time we asked an adolescent what they think about their desires? How can we see their lives from their perspective? Like you, we didn’t know either. So, we decided to meet them online to listen to them with their starry, triangle and heart-shaped Chashma (glasses) on. When we started our zoom call with Muskan, Shomya, Sahiba and Shubhangani with this question, we knew we were venturing into a gully of their thoughts and feelings.

तुम्हारी चाहतें क्या हैं? तुम क्या चाहती हो? आखिरी बार कब हमने किसी युवा से उनकी चाहतों के बारे में पूछा था? हम कैसे उनकी ज़िंदगी उनके नज़रिए से देख सकते हैं? आपकी ही तरह, हमें भी ये नहीं पता था. तो हमने उनसे ऑनलाइन मुलाकात की, ताकि उन्हें सुन सकें उनके तड़कते, भड़कते, तिकोने आकार के, सितारों वाले, दिल के आकार के चश्मों के साथ. जब हमने इस सवाल के साथ मुस्कान, शौम्या, साहिबा और शुभांगनी के साथ ज़ूम कॉल शुरू की तभी हम समझ गए थे कि अब हम इनके साथ चाहतों और विचारों की महीन गलियों में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं.

A young girl employs a clever strategy to get her family’s support for higher education. But she soon discovers that her father is one step ahead of her and thus unravels this love–hate relationship between a father and daughter. 

“फ se Field, श se Shiksha” is a series of 10 audio stories coming from the lived experiences and imaginations of education in rural India. How do we look at education outside classrooms? More importantly, who gets access to education at all? We explore all this and more, as members of our Learning Lab team take us along on their journeys of shiksha. In the last episode of the series, we meet a daughter and father, trying to navigate their bittersweet relationship around their different views on education.

उसे अपनी पढ़ाई को जारी रखने के लिए पैसों की ज़रूरत थी. उसने बहुत सारी तरकीबें सोच रखी थी जिससे की घरवालों से पढ़ाई के लिए पैसा भी निकाल ले और उन्हें पता भी न चले. लेकिन, वो कहावत है न, तु सेर तो मैं सवा सेर; उसकी कहानी के सवा सेर उसके पिताजी हैं जो हमेशा उसकी तरकीबों से एक कदम आगे की सोच रखते हैं. सुनिए एक पिता और एक बेटी की कहानी, कुलसुम की ज़ुबानी. ये इस शृंखला की आखरी कहानी है.
