“Baba, how does one become a Bayen (witch)?” Bhagirath asks his father Malinder near the dead lake as the shadow of his estranged mother looms over him. The recollecting of who his mother was and how she was ostracized as a witch from the Dom community in this story by Mahasweta Devi, is the unfolding of the myth of Bayen and the reality of witch-hunt. What emerges in the exchange between father and son, is the painting of Chaandidasi Gangadasi Bayen and her inner landscape (mann). We meet Chaandi through her son’s eyes and it is in this telling that the witch-hunt becomes more than a news report.

The fictive nature allows the story to be a reflective medium, for us to feel and imagine Chandi, Malinder and Bhagirath as they navigate through all that goes into the making of a witch.

This story was originally written in Bengali by an activist and writer Mahashweta Devi in 1976. This audio adaptation in Hindi is from the English version of the story, translated by Mahua Bhattacharya, published by Katha in the anthology, Separate Journeys.

“बाबा, कोई डायन कैसे बनती है?” सूखी झील के किनारे खड़े होकर भगीरथ जब यह सवाल अपने पिता मलिंदर से पूछता है उस वक्त उसकी बिछड़ी हुई मां की परछाई उसके ऊपर मंडरा रही होती है। महाश्वेता देवी, की कहानी बायन में भगीरथ अपनी मां को याद करता है और यह जानने की कोशिश करता है कि कैसे उन्हें डोम समुदाय ने बायन (डायन) कहकर अलग कर दिया. यह कहानी बायन के मिथक और डायन प्रथा की सच्चाई को सामने लाने का काम करती है. पिता और बेटे की बातचीत से भगीरथ की मां चंडीदासी गंगादासी का एक चित्र उभरता और उसके मन के भीतर की दुनिया की भी झलक मिलती है. हम उसे, उसके बेटे की नज़र से देखते हैं, और यहीं से डायन प्रथा सिर्फ़ एक खबर नहीं रह जाती, बल्कि एक ऐसी कहानी बनती है जो हमें महसूस करने और सोचने पर मजबूर करती है।

‘बायन’ कहानी सुप्रसिद्ध लेखिका महाश्वेता देवी द्वारा लिखी गई है. 1976 में बांग्ला में प्रकाशित इस कहानी का अंग्रज़ी अनुवाद महुआ भट्टाचार्य ने किया है जो कथा द्वारा प्रकाशित संग्रह "सेपरेट जर्नीज़" में शामिल है. ऑडियो के लिए इसका अंग्रज़ी से हिन्दी अनुवाद माधुरी आडवाणी ने किया है.
