It is essential for pesticide applicators to understand the differences between formulations in order to use the correct equipment, select the safest one, and increase their chances of success in managing pests. Chapter 4 of our study guide focuses on the differences in formulations and some key ingredients that help stabilize and deliver the active ingredients effectively.

"The label is the law": a phrase that is very common to hear from agriculture professionals, which means that it is our responsibility to understand and follow the directives written in the label of a specific pesticide we intend to use. Increasing our knowledge regarding the appropriate use of a product can help us reduce the negative impacts of these chemicals that vary in toxicity, modes of action, and many other aspects. This chapter is solely dedicated to discussing the pesticide label parts and wording for applicators.

Florida has strict rules when it comes to pesticide use with the goal of protecting communities, the environment and ecosystems for future generations. In this chapter we discuss the reasons for these regulations, where these are located in the Florida Statutes, entities that regulate and educate on pesticide use, and many more topics essential to pesticide handlers.

Using hydroponic systems in STEM teaching at home - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are disciplines essential for developing critical thinking skills that will open many developmental opportunities for our youth. Incorporating hydroponic systems as a special project, demonstration, or just for basic gardening can provide opportunities for children to get hands-on experiences that can broaden their horizons when exploring careers in agriculture and science, chemistry, and other fields. It can also provide a chance for a fun team-building experience for parents and kids to bond and find common ground. Remember, UF/IFAS Extension and 4-H Youth Development Agents can help you get started.

The Farming with Science crew talks about performing a reproductive evaluation for our small ruminant sires. Bucks and rams are extremely important to our sheep and goat farming industry. They should be in top shape before the breeding season starts to ensure that they can sire our herd. For this reason Dr. Cabrera talks in detail about the importance of a breeding soundness exam and potential issues that producers can avoid by early monitoring males ensuring that they are in good reproductive capacity.

Science is complicated. Farming is the delicate balance between what we can do for our crops vs. environmental and biological challenges. In the end, the most equipped survives. Choosing the correct genetics, designing the best layout complemented with knowledge of what we might encounter in terms of diseases and disorders goes a long ways in determining our production success. Plant Pathologist Marlia Bosques guides us through the steps needed for accurately identifying plant diseases on the farm. We discuss differences between signs and symptoms we can observe in field crops, which can help us correctly decipher production problems.
Remember to contact your local Extension office for diagnostic services and information on how to treat and prevent disease outbreaks.

"What is wrong with this plant?" is a common question we get asked. The answer is not as simple as you would think. There is a whole host of challenges that can make farming and gardening a nightmare. Some of these are environmental, while others are caused by pathogens. This episode will hopefully shed some light on this question as Marlia Bosques, Plant Pathologist with University of Florida discusses diseases and disorders that can affect our crops, reduce our yields, and spread in our farm. Join us in the everchanging quest to identify these challenges correctly.

Lets talk about vaccines in beef cattle as a low cost way to prevent losses due to preventable diseases. Vaccines are effective tools that with the help of our local veterinarian, can be incorporated in our herd health protocols to benefit our animals and promote efficiency in our operation.
To learn more about vaccines, how they work and which diseases to vaccinate against, Dr. Joao Bittar, our Florida Beef Cattle Extension Veterinarian will explain more on this subject.
