014 in conversation with Nick Bubb
On this week’s show we are very lucky to be welcoming someone that has fit more into the last 20 years than most do in a lifetime. We have former pro sailor, global adventurer and wildlife conservationist Nick Bubb. To summarise what he has done in a paragraph isn’t really possible, so I've bullet pointed the main highlights below: · Engineering degree from the University of Exeter. · 10 years sailing all around the world professionally, including once around the world non-stop. · Raced solo across the Atlantic, competed in the Volvo Ocean Race and many of the world’s biggest offshore races. · For 4 years he was an investment manager for one of the UK's leading investment companies - Brewin Dolphin. · Re-enacted Shackleton’s famous voyage from Antarctica to South Georgia, sailing across the Southern Ocean in a 23 foot wooden rowing boat wearing vintage clothing. · For over 6 years now has been the Business Development Director at Fauna & Flora International- the oldest wildlife conservation organisation in the world. Working alongside the likes of vice-presidents Sir David Attenborough and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in trying to preserve our planet and its inhabitants. · Gave a very popular TEDx talk on the roles within modern wildlife conversation, see below. · Was a parliamentary candidate for the Green Party in the 2019 General Election, returning the 11th highest vote share from all 485 candidates nationally. · Along with all his sailing, has taken on masses of land based endurance events and expeditions, including Ironman and ultra-marathons, adventure racing and ultra-biking. This guy is the epitome of an adventurer forging a career out of doing what he loves and taking on his passions as a way of life. Key takeaways: Building a career on doing what you love Importance of Working as a team Importance of using your intuition Discussing how parliaments are acting on wildlife conservation issues Some of the challenges of sailing around the world Living out of a bag to follow his dreams of sailing professionally Importance of having a strong support network Living for experiences rather than money What some of the most pressing issues are with our environment The link between human health and our planets health How complicated and interconnected our world’s political systems are Nick was very open and honest about life and career and proved to be very valuable as a guest on the show. 012 - in conversation with James West
This week we have Business man James West. (Clean slate websites, ONLE Network) He owns and manages one of the fastest growing network events in the U.K along side his wife Kelly called ONLE. What's really interesting about this, is that they went from 0 meetings per month to 22 within 2 years and i believe they have attended nearly every one in that 2 years.. Crazy right? James also had a career in journalism for a number of years, where he wrote for an IT magazine and also has a company which builds websites called clean slate websites. There's also another topic which we go into great detail about on the show and that is the struggle James had with his mental health... He was struggling from crippling depression for a number of years before he met his now wife and business partner Kelly. He talks at length about the struggles he used to face with this on a daily basis and how he coped with it, but on a more positive note, how he came out of the other side of it. Some of the key takeaways from the show Mental health and some of the difficulties surrounding it. Building a culture within a business. Striving for happiness. Dynamic of running a business with your wife. Mindset. Difficulties of running a business. Sacrifices. Successes in business. Friends within business. Marketing and knowing who your market is. Having a vision for your business. It was a really enjoyable conversation for me and am very grateful to James for being as open as he was about the issues he's faced in his life. So i hope you enjoy. If there is anyone that listens to this show or is subscribed to this email that is struggling with their mental health at the moment, there is a great podcast series called Feel better live more by Dr Rangan Chatterjee. On quite a few of his shows he has experts within the field of mental health, come on the show to give actionable tips and help you to understand why you maybe having mental health issues. Business Of Life - Episode 010 - In conversation with Simon Tucker
On this weeks episode, I'll be having a conversation with Sales coach and Businessman Simon Tucker He owns a company called profitable Conversation where he teaches people and companies how to become better at selling. He works with companies and individuals to firstly understand where they are going wrong and then comes up with a solution so they can start to hit their targets. Simon has quite an interesting story... Him and 3 other partners built a company in finance and training with a yearly turnover of £25million in just 7 years! Whats more interesting though is they did this all within the financial crash of 2008 too. Staggering right! We go into detail about how him and his partners managed this feet and how he himself had to teach himself to become better at business by reading numerous books and going on training courses. Proving that self development is so important if you want to succeed. Simon was very open about how he used a mentor and coaches to help him not only build the business but also exit the business. Something which at first he wasn't entirely sure he should do. Some of the key takeaways are: No matter what business you have, you are always selling. Self development is key for personal and business growth If you believe in something just get started and learn on the job. Having mentors and coaches are critically important Knowing your market is vital Sometimes taking a risk is what you need to do to succeed. There's no substitute for hard work but leveraging out your weaknesses to others does make it slightly easier. Simon Tucker - Profitable conversation https://www.profitableconversation.com/ I hope you guy's enjoy it and let me know what you think. Business of life - 008 - in conversation with Alix inch
On this weeks episode, I'll be having a conversation with Alix Inch. Alix owns and runs the Forex Organisation (@the_forexorg) which is a Forex education platform which he's setup to teach people how to trade on the currency markets. He's also the second half of Bitesize forex which was another trading platform he set up with his old business partner Ryan Chandler After working on sites, builders merchants and other jobs, Alix decided that the life he was living just weren't for him, so started trading. He and Ryan then quickly realized that the level of education for Forex was terrible and not transparent, so decided to teach people but they both didn't quite realize how big it would get to and effectively created a monster, so decided to go there separate ways and work on their own individual education companies. In the show we touch on how, although hes been successful financially and in business, he still didn't feel fulfilled until quite recently, due to the fact that he took some time out to think about what was important to him and then rearranged his business to suit his family life. We touch on his motivations and his why, his love for his sport memorabilia, how he teaches people and why you should just go for it in Life. Hes a straight to the point guy that doesn't pull any punches and I do have to warn you there are a few swear words in the show. I hope you guy's enjoy it and let me know what you think. If you think this podcast would be beneficial to anyone you know please pass the message on and don't forget the #bizoflifepod for any social media posts regarding it. Business Of Life - 005 - In conversation with Major Kate Philp
In this weeks episode, I'll be having a conversation with Ex army officer and Leadership Consultant Major Kate Philp. Major Kate is an inspirational women! She's had a successful and long career in the army which led to her getting promoted to a major officer. She served on a number of trips to Afghanistan with the last trip not going to plan. This leads to her story which she tells me on the show. Major Kate was a commanding officer when her and her troops armoured vehicle got hit by an IED on a routine patrol. This led to a number of casualties but also very sadly a fatality. Kate also suffered a very bad injury to her leg which led to her having to make a decision as to whether she was going to have her leg amputated, or keep it on. She took the bold decision to have it taken off and as part of her recovery, Kate set off on an expedition to ski over 200 miles, with a prosthetic leg, accompanied by others including Prince Harry. It really was a remarkable feat. She and her team endured temperatures of around -40c just to put it into perspective. Kate goes into detail in the conversation, of the events leading up to the accident as well as the aftermath. She talks about how having a goal helped her to overcome her challenges and the resilience she needed to get herself back on track. We also talk about her new career in Consulting, (Corran Consulting) where she is helping other business owners and people by teaching them leadership and management skills. We also spoke about her Keynote speaking which she is now being asked to do on a regular basis. If you ever get the opportunity to get to one of her events and here her speak. I would highly advise it.
