From Combat to Clinical Breakthroughs: Warren Ponder’s Mission to Heal Trauma

Meet Warren Ponder — a combat veteran turned trauma researcher with over 8.5 years of clinical experience treating PTSD, especially in military and first responder communities. After serving 15 months in Operation Iraqi Freedom as an infantryman, Warren used his battlefield experiences to shape his academic journey, earning a degree in psychology from Texas Tech and later completing both his thesis and dissertation in social work at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Warren has co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles and collaborated internationally with researchers from Denmark, Canada, New Zealand, and more than 15 universities. He’s also the co-developer of the EMDR-Negative Affect (EMDR-NA) protocol — an innovation in trauma treatment.

In this episode, we dive into his latest work on the Public Safety Employees Treatment Court (PSETC), the first justice-involved program in the U.S. tailored specifically for first responders. Warren brings a unique blend of real-world experience and advanced statistical research to the front lines of trauma care.

Cassandra Holt Kimbell, LPC-S, NCC is the owner and lead therapist at Freestyle Therapy LLC. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Supervisor in California. She is also currently a PsyD student working towards licensure as a Clinical Counseling Psychologist. Cassandra is a trauma therapist certified in EMDR and offers consulting and supervision through her partner company with Monica Williams, Freestyle Supervision and EMDR Group.

With a lifetime as a musician, she is passionate about offering workshops and groups addressing mental health issues tailored to the entertainment, freelance, and entrepreneurial fields, as well as the neurodivergent community. She offers individual and group counseling, as well as EMDR intensives, assessments, and evaluations. She utilizes an eclectic model, customizing her approach to best help the person she is holding space for at that moment. She utilizes CBT, Expressive Arts, and Somatic related approaches, partnering with other practitioners to take a full person approach to trauma treatment through yoga and meditation. She focuses not only on the importance of individual therapy, but also creating a safe community around the client.

Maggie Stenson's Bio:

Maggie Stenson, MCN, RD, LD, CEDS-C is a registered dietitianspecializing in eating disorders. Maggie graduated from Dallas Baptist University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in business management. Maggie went on to complete her master’s degree in clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.After graduating from UT Southwestern in 2016, Maggie began working at the Renfrew Center of Texas in the partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) settings. In June 2017, she joined the team at Eating Recovery Center of Texas and worked in the inpatient, residential, PHP, and IOP levels of care.

In 2020, Maggie began working in the outpatient setting at Dallas Nutritional Counseling. In 2023, she founded ATX Nutritional Counseling to provide service and care to the greater Austinarea.Maggie has experience with clients of all ages and a variety of diagnoses including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). She has a special interest in working with children and adolescents and ARFID.Maggie is a member of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp) DFW Chapter and has served as the Membership Co-chair for the 2019 to 2020 term. She also completed the requirements through iaedp to become a Certified Eating Disordered Specialist and Consultant (CEDS-C).

Maggie is an active member of the Central Texas Eating Disorder Specialists (CTEDS) and currently serves as the Education Chair for the 2025-2026 term.Maggie provides both individual and family nutritional counseling and is passionate about helping her clients heal their relationship with food and their bodies. Maggie’s food philosophy is that all foods fit, and balance and variety are key to living a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.

Sara has experience working with teens and adults struggling with a variety of issues from anxiety and self-esteem to complex post-traumatic stress disorder.Sara is a former public high school fine arts dance teacher and drill team director. She takes a holistic approach to teaching students and has presented workshops focused on social emotional learning at both the Center for Educator Development in Fine Arts Summit & Texas Dance Educators Association Convention.

She prides herself on the relationships she has built with her former students and always strives to provide any students with a safe, inclusive environment to explore, connect and create without judgment. Sara strives to show up authentically, create genuine connections, and provide a safe space for those who need it. She currently offers group mental wellness workshops, leadership workshops, and professional development in addition to individual counseling.
