What badminton can learn from football (soccer for the US listeners)

In this episode of Badminton Science, we dive into what the world of badminton can learn from two of the most professionally developed sports on the planet: soccer and tennis. With a focus on preparation training, activation routines, and periodization, I break down how these sports approach warm-ups or preperation training, physical readiness, and managing training loads over time.

You'll learn how soccer uses structured activation, mobility, and movement drills to optimize performance before matches. We also explore how football use strategic planning to balance training intensity, avoid burnout, and peak at the right time.

Whether you're a coach or player, this episode offers practical ideas you can apply to your own badminton training to stay sharp, resilient, and consistently improving.

Combining badminton with powerlifting?

Not everyone wants to focus solely on one sport, but many like to do their sport and combine it with something else. It has become very popular with strength training in all its forms and therefore this episode is about combining Powerlifting and Badminton. It is the first episode in an upcoming series about combining different sports with badminton. Now, if you want to combine: how should you do it in order to get as much as possible out of both sports? I go through that in the coming episodes. If you have something you're wondering about that you want me to make an episode about, write to me on instagram @badmintonsciencepodcast or @robert_jonsson_pt

5 steps to faster and better recovery for athletes

In this week's episode of Badminton Science Podcast, I give my 5 steps for faster recovery. It's not just about physically recovery, but mental recovery as well. Many times we see more fit and even better players lose to inferior opposition due to mental exhaustion. Sometimes it is the physical exhaustion that is the problem. Sometimes we have a hard time coping and adapting with all the training, but to get the most out of it, we have to recover better! There will also be a bonus at the end for how you can... well, you have to listen to the episodes if you want to know what the bonus will be.

Simple but effective strength training for athletes

How to strength train as an athlete with or without access to a gym? In this week's episode, I go through how you should (or could) strength train as a badminton player based on the solid work that Badminton Sweden has done in their player development plan. Unfortunately they are only in swedish, but you can follow the link to check them out: https:/ /badminton.nu/elit/elitprogrammet-och-spelarutvecksplan . What I really like is that Badminton Sweden has developed several documents about player development ranging from strength training to physical requirements and even tactical things such as game concept. In the episode you will hear me talk about and go over the program "strength training for badminton players" and give my opinions and suggestions/corrections on various exercises, things I would do different and more. I do not critizise the program, this is just my way of giving you more tools in your toolbox to reach your full potential! Soon my own strength training program for badminton players will be released, but for now you will have to stick to the three I have done so far where I strongly recommend you to check out "The Protected Player" as well as "Training for tall athletes" if you want to get effective programs for your strength training (the latter works for all different heights of players). You can find all the training programs I have done here: https://www.sugiyamabadminton.com/badminton-training-program

Training for tall badminton players and athletes - the Viktor Axelsen approach

Have you ever wondered what you should do differently depending on how tall you are? Should a player at 170 cm train the same way as a player near 2 meters? The answer is both yes and no. In order to get explosive or strong the same rules still apply, but choosing the right exercises and having the right priorities is hard. Therefor, I did a lot of research based on a badminton superstar who happens to know what do to as an tall athlete, Viktor Axelsen. I have combined some of Viktor's approaches to various areas of his needs and added some thoughts of my own. Take a listen and learn a thing or two about what makes Viktor Axelsen great and what you can do (even if you are not tall) to improve.

My experience of the BWF World Championship 2023 in Copenhagen

In this week's episode I talk about the full experience of watching the finals at the BWF World Championship 2023 in Copenhagen. Spoiler: It was amazing. BWF, Badminton Denmark, Royal Arena and all involved with the event did a great job. The matches were also great with some great rallies and new world champions. The atmosphere in the crowd (especially when the danes were playing) was incredible and it took some time for me to get my voice back from the finals day.
