A francoski čebelarji se tudi, če je sezona dobra, soočajo s precejšnjimi težavami, saj tam nimajo nobene pravne zaščite čebel na državni ravni. Ob tem pa je tja že pred 20-imi leti prispel azijski sršen, agresivni plenilec medonosnih čebel. Njihova avtohtona čebela je Apis mellifera mellifera, po francosko imenovana "l’abeille noire" – črna čebela oziroma temna čebela. In ker imajo v Franciji le lokalne uredbe oziroma priporočila za ohranjanje čebel, je to bolj stvar društvenih pobud in posameznikov, med katerimi je tudi Roderick Wheatley.
Pred približno petdesetimi ali šestdesetimi leti je bila pri nas samo avtohtona temna čebela, a je zaradi uporabe pesticidov in pršice varoje pomrlo veliko čebeljih družin. Zato so ljudje tukaj čebele začeli uvažati iz vseh mogočih krajev. Razumem, da so ljudje želeli imeti čebele in so kupovali druge pasme, ampak to je bila popolna katastrofa za našo temno čebelo.
