He became a disciple of renowned investor Benjamin Graham while studying at Columbia, later starting his own investment partnerships in the 1950s. His defining investment was acquiring New England textile firm Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, using it as a vehicle to purchase stocks and acquire companies via equity stakes.As Buffett evolved from Graham's "cigar butt" investing approach to focusing on high quality companies, Berkshire itself transformed into a powerhouse conglomerate with wholly owned subsidiaries in insurance, energy, manufacturing and consumer goods. Buffett also formed lifelong friendships and symbiotic partnerships with people like Charlie Munger and Bill Gates.
