乡村携带着中华文明的基因，隐藏着中华文明演化的原动力。乡村，到主客二分是全球生态危机的认识论根源判断和去“西方中心主义”的、东方的天人合一之农业可持续的理论资源的构建，到国际比较视野的世界农业“三分天下”的模式差异的归纳，再到中国农业问题分析的梳理和在地的农村生态资源价值化实践的总结，对生态文明和农业可持续从理论和实践进行了探索性的研究。
1.从气候地理约束对人类文明史演化的影响立论，梳理中国引领生态化转型及其与农业可持续发展的重大相关性问题，让读者认识中华民族优秀文明伟大复兴的重要意义。
2.从国际比较研究视角和历史维度归纳世界农业“三分天下”的格局，通过“去西方中心主义”的三农基础理论研究来充实“中国话语”建构。
工业文明飞速发展带来严重的生态危机和农业困局，农业困境和人类文明的出路在哪里呢？答案是：工业文明向生态文明转型，产业化农业向农业可持续回归。
本书第一章以人类文明发展受气候变迁巨大影响之竺可桢假说为楔子，论述人类农业文明受地理气候自然等约束而具有先天的差异性及其演化，阐述了农业的本质以及农业与生态的密切关系。第二章论述主客二分是全球生态危机的认识论根源，归纳了有别于“西方中心主义”的、东方“天人合一”的农业可持续的理论资源。第三章论述了殖民地国家大农场农业的“盎格鲁-撒克逊（Anglo-Saxon）模式”，欧洲宗主国中小农场农业的“莱茵（Rhein）模式”，以及未被西方彻底殖民化的原住民农业的“东亚模式”的世界农业“三分天下”的格局。第四章梳理了中国延续千年的可持续农业，因国家工业化和地方政府工业化以及全球化的制度性改造，以及生物化、化学化和机械化的技术性改造，面临危机；提出了中国农业的可持续发展回归。第五章归纳了浙江丽水、宁夏隆德、重庆城口以及贵州罗甸等地农村生态资源价值化实现的农村可持续发展的路径。第六章简介了农业可持续的国内外经验，通过国际比较视野研究，指出了农业可持续发展的前进方向。
