Zen Endurance 731 - Juneteenth Epic Ride to Independence, TX
Singlespeed 80 mile gravel ride hitting 108 degrees! Navigating heavy gravel truck traffic in stereo. Sounds cool! Chased by dog. History of Juneteenth and Independence, TX. Instagram video from atop a ridge. Guy that won Ironman Cairns brought his bike on family vacation on a cruise ship. Is that selfish? Huge hills on 48x18. Ouch! Using the Voice Recorder on the watch. Climbing up and over the highest point of the ride - Bluff Road. Should I do my next epic gravel bike ultra in singlespeed? Stopping at a certified wildlife habitat. Upside of flatbar is steep and technical descents are way safer... so you can go faster and have more fun! Three big descents in a row. Flashlight on watch is really handy! Almost having to walk because it's so steep. Stopping for the incredible view. Thoughts on carrying a gun on a bike ride. Regardless, carrying a pocketknife on a ride is really handy. Steep! 18 RPM at 300 watts!!! Showing the guys from France my frankenbike. They were cool! Kai got a job at R.E.I.! Almost hit a deer. How I fell in love with gravel biking. It's the lack of cars and all the extra wildlife! Sunrise and Sunset is one of my favorite features on the face of smart watches. Review of RockBros arm coolers. Putting butterfly back into my swimming! How to progress gradually to not get injured. stop and Instagram video shoot of the scenery. Need to compare heart rate on watch to Form goggles built-in HR. When I was asked to be in a strip contest. Riding singlespeed requires less thinking? Taking a break at the oldest black church and Freeman (freed slave) community in the area. The lag correction on autopause for the watch is far better than on the Garmins. Riding along Highway 105 and the traffic roaring by in stereo is INSANE. A little bit of my motorcycle history. ZenDurance 728 - Unhurried and Garmin FR 970
Join me for a 4 hour gravel ride with aerobars on a singlespeed in Texas! Show Notes: History of and how to best enjoy one of these "ride along" shows. Assioma power pedals How gravel tires open up more paved but sketchy connector roads Sharrows! Reading off power and cadence while climbing. Dropping into Lick Creek Park with heavy gravel Garmin Forerunner 970 killer features review Ribbon Snakes and Green Snakes Thank you Lachlan Morton for making pink jerseys cool. Coasting more on longer rides will actually make you go faster in the end. How ranchers turn flatbed railroad cars into small bridges. Riding upright when super hot might overall be faster than low and aero due to the cooling. Rock Bros arm coolers are interesting - solid on one side and mesh on the other. For sun block / cooling. Fueling trick - clear bottles so you can see how much you've used to help stay on track. Meshy stuff WAY better in hot conditions. Dramatic cooling effect compared to classic cycling kit. Garmin 970 added rucking, sapphire glass, flashlight, speaker and microphone, but no voice notes... Fenix is overkill for most people, and that adds weight and makes it a poor running watch. Front-facing collision warning radar would be cool device since you can hit a car with your head down. Story how I was friends with the inventor of Morf-tech bars and he died from a crash like that. Interesting nuance of singlespeeding - sometimes faster on long rides by capping effort on flats and downhills? "Unhurried" vs. "Slow Living". Difference is intention and middle pathing. Getting water from country gas station. Cool soundscape. Surrounded by Roadies. Drifting in gravel turns is FUN. Uhurried more like Taoism "Flow" than Slow Living is. How I got the nickname “Cool Breeze”. What different formats work best for Instagram, YouTube, and podcasts. Pausing to do things right when being unhurried instead of putting things off for later because you are in a rush. Trimming workouts down in time if tired instead of just going easier. Set an end time for your workouts - more important than a start time. You want to be extremely relaxed in aero position. Why flat terrain wears you out more than rolling. Singlespeed flatbar gravel bike is oddly like 80s BMX bikes. The truth about drinking from the hose and not being let in the house. How we get rolling hills with steep gully walls. How to "row" your bike up steep hills. Trick to keep your water bladder in the freezer to stop mold and also have ice water on your hot rides. More on "time capping" to give you more free time. The coolest thing about gravel isn't the gravel, it's the lack of cars. Rear radar apps on your phone will play the alerts through your headphones too. Get the swimming version of Shokz headphones if you want them to be truly sweatproof. Signs of nerve damage in feet. How I got the nickname "Cool Breeze". Cooling down under a freeway bridge. 91 degrees in the shade. Using cold soda to cool down faster from the inside out. Fueling 300 calories per hour using table sugar and a little bit of Gatorade powder and sodium citrate. Zen story of being unhurried to become enlightened. Hitting singletrack and pipeline road. Signs you're trying to do too much. The "shoot first, point later" concept of videoing your rides with an Insta360 camera. Thoughts on Deepseek AI vs. AI scammers. Why would you vote for people that want to put you out of your own job? How tubeless tires are what really changed cycling forever so we can ride gravel endlessly. Generative AI is just only "ok". Needs supervision or it's noticeably garbage. ZenEndurance 724 - Snow Day like Tomorrow
Experiment: Letting things take as long as they take. Walking Zoey in the ice. "Time crunched athlete" sucks. Figure things out and take back your time! Mindfully doing things, like a Japanese Tea Ceremony. If you have to come in to work, check to see if your CEO is at his/her desk too. ;) Driving in the snow to work! (Rarity in Texas) Getting old sucks, but... Dream car - Toyota Land Cruiser (for the adventure offroad) Creating buffers around your time also protects yourself from yourself. Taking time to pause and think when leaving the house so you don't forget things. Visualizing your next workout, so you don't forget things and also mentally get started on it. I like exploring, hence why I like gravel biking and 4x4 vehicles. Thoughts on older Toyota Land Cruiser vs. modern 4x4 American truck with AWD. Slow living isn't just about protecting yourself from others, it's about protecting yourself from yourself! Doing fewer things, but doing them better. So you have to decide what's most important. Asking yourself who are you doing this for. You or somebody else? "Jeffing". So mindful, so demure. ;) Slowing down helps you to stop forgetting things for your workouts, especially gear and accessories. Some good responses when people push back against you slowing down. Being slow has a calming effect on others. Went swimming after it was 19 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Cut it short due to starting to get hypothermia. There was room on that door! (Titanic). Taking the time to put things in the right place at the right time. Exercise is the foundation block that should be "non-negotiable" I let people pass me on the road so they aren't putting pressure on me to drive faster than I want. You want to get where working out is a habit that is harder to NOT do. "Rest and Digest" IS the state of Zen Flow. Habits where you don't have to think that much keep you in "Rest and Digest" mode. Stoicism is just being tough for being's sake. Gen X stories are true. I pee before driving anywhere so I can enjoy the drive. Do hard things on purpose when it's easy.
