CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM OR A PUT DOWN??
There is always a time when we all stand to be corrected. Nobody gets it right at all time. So making mistakes and missing the mark is what makes us human. We also learn from mistakes( well, that is what is expected) and such learning makes us a better person in  life. People who have excelled in life will tell you they have made so many mistakes and stumbled through many obstacles and huddles. So when someone tells us we are not doing well or corrects us, we should not take it the wrong way if we want to be a better version of ourselves. However criticism can be demeaning and a put down rather than helpful.  So the question becomes : WHEN DOES A CRITICISM OR CORRECTION , CONSTRUCTIVE RATHER THAN DESTRUCTIVE? HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN A GENUINE DESIRE TO MAKE YOU A BETTER VERSION OF YOURSELF RATHER THAN A PUT DOWN OR DEMEANING? This current episode of YOUTH+EMO describes 5 areas to explore to determine if a criticism or correction is meant well or just a ploy to attack your self-esteem and damage your confidence. Understanding the difference is important for a better mental health and well-being. #youth+emo #correction #self-esteem #well-being #mentalhealth #mistakes #personaldevelopement

"DEPRESSED, WITH WICKED SENSE OF HUMOUR AND BUBBLY"
Depression as a mental health condition still comes with stigma. There is still that sense that people who  are depressed or taking antidepressants are different. In other words, that depression is something to be ashamed of. People seem to forget that being depressed does not change who you are. It does not make a bubbly, excitable and funny person less so. Also the feeling of hopelessness( especially at this time ) is something all of us feel albeit it temporary. In  any case, whether our feeling of hopelessness is temporary or lingers on, does not make us less or more of a person we truly are. This episode of YOUTH+EMO podcast gets more into this topic . The episode mentioned other symptoms of depression some of which we don't always associate with depression.   This episode highlights at what point  we may need to seek psychosocial support and/or medical intervention. #depression #mentalhealth #youth+emo #podcast #stigma #dwaynejohnson #ladygaga #michaelphelps #jkrowling

SOCIAL MEDIA BINGING IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH
Social media binging is dangerous to your health. The common saying that smoking cigarette is dangerous to your health is something we have heard and read so many times. But a connection between too much consumption or spending hours unend on social media and poor mental and physical well-being is one most do not easily make. Selena Gomez had to stay off internet for a period of time to look after her mental well-being. Do you know how long she stayed off the internet? You have to listen to this episode to find out. It is a 'social media fasting' most of us will find almost impossible to even think possible. Suffice it to say that Selena Gomez found such period of fasting from internet changed her life for good. " I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal", Selena Gomez concluded. Social media and internet binging triggers or at least worsen a lot of mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and eating disorders.  Also according to Dr. Delisi " cyberbullying is a very real risk, and the higher the 'dose' of social media youth are exposed to, the higher the risk of cyberbullying or exposure to predatory influences. This episodes also concludes with helpful tips on " what to replace social media binging or addiction with".  'Social media fasting'  definitely comes with a lot of physical and social well-being benefits.  #selenagomez #socialmedia #binge #influencers #youth #mentalhealth #youth+emo #depression #anxiety #cyberbullying #eatingdisorders #obesity #insomnia #exercise

YOU ARE OK
The definition of perfect beauty as seen on social media, beauty magazines and a lot of online sites are never based in reality. They always give an impression that perfect body and  'ideal body weight'  is a given. This false impression of beauty has lead so many to loose self-confidence  , developed low self-esteem and even mental health issues . Some have sort plastic or cosmetic surgery to try and achieve the 'perfect' look which to be honest does not exist( but these beauty magazines and sites will never tell you the truth). The quest for perfect look most of the time, ends in disappointments, heart break, emotional turmoil and financial costs not to talk of mental health issues. Such mental health issues like depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and suicidal tendencies are linked to low body image and thinking less of ourselves. This episode looks at an alarming statistics from a recent study and survey of beauty images on online sites. The episode also concluded with 6 things that we all need to remind ourselves of, all the time  especially when bombarded with these false images. SUSTAINABLE MENTAL HEALTH
Sustainability  has become a buzz word currently in every sphere of life. It is mostly linked with environment and the need to take concerted, sustained and deliberate effort by government and various institutions to preserve the environment for the future generations. So in essence sustainability is  defined as effort to meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It involves principles that revolve around the economy, society and environment . This is also informally or literally referred to three factors of profit, people and planet. This is definitely an urgent tasks that everyone in this current generation has something to contribute to , to achieve the desired outcome and goals. However, one area that seems lost  is the  need for SUSTAINABLE MENTAL HEALTH.  While efforts needs to be made to ensure sustainability of this planet as per economy, society and environment, there is the need to  remind us all that mental health sustainability is and should  definitely be interwoven into the people or societal aspects of the sustainability projects. If this is not taken seriously , then the future generation may have a great economy, and environment but a  deficient mental health to maximum the benefit of the planet. #mentalhealth #youth #young #sustainability #planet #world #economy #enviroment #savetheplanet #love #sustainableliving

MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES IN YOUNG PEOPLE
Mental health issues or illnesses has gradually got an increased attention all over the world. Few years ago, discussion of mental health or even a slight admission of having mental health problem, is seen as a taboo subject and frowned at. People have to suffer in silence and will rather suffer to the point of death than admit they are having mental health challenges. However , recently mental health has been brought to the forefront and discussed in a more positive light. High profile individuals and celebrities has also been able to speak up about their mental health challenges and are becoming less ashamed of talking openly about it. The challenges though still persist in terms of understanding and acceptance that mental health issues  need equal attention like any other physical illnesses. Also access to treatment both psychological, psychosocial and medical still remain a gold dust. This episode seeks to highlight the increasing epidemic of mental health problems in young people. Mental health issues like depression, anxiety  , self-harm and suicide has increased dramatically in young people as young as 13 years. This current COVID-19 pandemic has only made things worse. The pandemic has been raging for almost two years and with new variants of COVID-19 like Delta and Omicron variant being identified, the hope that this pandemic will soon be in the rear view mirror is becoming daily a challenge. This episode is for everyone to realise that while we rightly fight and take care of COVID-19 epidemic, our young ones( leaders of tomorrow) are suffering  and dying in silence due to the epidemic of mental health issues. We as parents, organisations, educational institutions, health bodies and policy makers should not loose sight of what our young ones are going through. We do not want to eventually defeat this pandemic, which we will only to be left with another pandemic of mental health epidemic in young people. #mentalhealth #youngadult #teenagers #depression #anxiety #suicide #self-harm #pandemic #epidemic #COVID-19 #Omicron
