The Goggler Podcast #729: Materialists

Today, on The Goggler Podcast, Bahir and Uma watch and review Celine Song's take on the romantic drama in Materialists.

Materialists is now showing in Malaysian cinemas.

Materialists follows Lucy Mason, a successful New York–based matchmaker whose business treats romance almost like financial transactions. Lucy expertly pairs clients — rigid about traits like height, income, or lifestyle — yet struggles to apply the same clarity to her own love life. At a recent wedding tied to her matchmaking success, she encounters Harry Castillo, a wealthy and seemingly perfect bachelor, and unexpectedly reunites with her ex, John Pitts, now a struggling actor and part-time caterer. As Lucy navigates her growing attraction to Harry and the unresolved feelings stirred by John’s reappearance, the film explores themes of love, authenticity, and the tension between emotional connection and material aspirations. The movie was written and directed by Celine Song and stars Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans.

The Goggler Podcast #723: War of the Worlds

Today, on The Goggler Podcast, Bahir and Uma watch and review the utterly inept War of the Worlds remake on Prime Video.

War of the Worlds is now streaming on Prime Video.

In this modern screenlife reimagining of H.G. Wells’s classic, Homeland Security cyber‑security specialist Will Radford monitors the world through surveillance grids and grapples with strained family ties when a sudden alien invasion erupts — depicted entirely through computer screens, video calls, and digital feeds. As meteors strike and tripod-like war machines emerge, Will and his NASA scientist friend race to shield society while uncovering a chilling truth: the aliens consume data, not flesh, and the government’s “Goliath” surveillance system may have provoked them. With the help of his hacker son Disruptor and pregnant daughter, Will hacks into Goliath to unleash a virus and shut it down, foiling a global catastrophe and ultimately defeating the invaders — but not before exposing corruption, revealing heroism, and raising haunting questions about privacy, power, and pervasive technology. War of the Worlds was directed by Rich Lee and stars Ice Cube, Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Andrea Savage, Henry Hunter Hall, Iman Benson, and Devon Bostick.
