Episode 290: Cultivating Your Creative Practice

The world needs your creativity, friend.

And in today’s episode of the podcast, I’m diving into why this season is the perfect time to cultivate your creative practice, take a step inward, and pour into yourself.

Reflecting on the natural rhythms of fall and winter, I explore how these seasons call us to rest, reflect, and restore, encouraging creatives like you and me to follow that rhythm by nurturing our inner world and embracing practices that bring our creativity back to life.

Ways to Cultivate Your Creative Practice:

* Seasonal Reflection and CreativityI share how observing seasonal changes in nature can inspire us as creatives to honor this time as one of personal renewal. Just as the trees shed their leaves and settle into winter, we too can take time to turn inward, which fuels our future creative growth.

* The Importance of Self-Care for Creative FulfillmentI talk about the importance of nurturing creativity for your own enjoyment, without the pressure to monetize it. Our creativity doesn’t always have to serve productivity or profit—it can simply enrich our lives and support our overall well-being.

* Reclaiming Creativity in a Capitalistic WorldExploring how capitalism often influences our creative lives, I discuss the value of reclaiming creativity as a source of joy and self-expression. For those who are interested, I suggest checking out Maurice Harris (@blumeandplume on Instagram) for a fresh perspective on creative practice outside of a profit-driven mindset.

* Ideas for Cultivating Your Creative PracticeI offer a few practical ideas for reconnecting with creativity, including:

* Going on a solo “artist date” to feed your inner artist

* Playing around in your closet with your wardrobe

* Experimenting with cooking for fun

* Visiting the library to explore new topics

* Spending time in nature and observing the season

Resources Mentioned in This Episode:

* The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron: A classic for creatives looking to tap into daily practices like “morning pages” or solo artist dates that inspire and refuel.

* A Year in Practice by Jacqueline Suskind: A seasonal guide to living and creating in sync with nature’s cycles, offering practices and wisdom for each season.

Your Creativity Matters

I hope this conversation reminds you that taking care of your creativity isn’t just about productivity; it’s about finding joy and fulfillment in the process. In a world that often feels uncertain, I truly believe that our art, voices, and creative passion are needed now more than ever.

Episode 289: Dealing with Decision Fatigue + Burnout as a Creative Entrepreneur with Josh Berger

How do you navigate decision fatigue as a creative?

Especially when you’re constantly bombarded with decisions that require your attention from work, home life, and personal relationships? Well, today on the podcast I’m talking about handling decision fatigue as a creative with licensed professional counselor, Josh Berger. Josh has been on the podcast before, and today he’s back to dive into how decision fatigue impacts creatives and business owners like us. He’s the CEO of Rivers Edge Counseling and Wellness, where he supports both his clients and team members through the mental health challenges that can come with running a business and navigating life.

This episode is a powerful conversation about how decision fatigue shows up in our day-to-day lives, how we can spot the early warning signs, and what we can do to mitigate it. If you’re someone who wears a lot of hats, has an overflowing schedule, and constantly faces deadlines, this episode will help you identify and avoid decision fatigue before it becomes overwhelming. Tune in above for the full episode!

Takeaways from this episode:

* What decision fatigue is and how it manifests in our daily lives.

* How decision fatigue can affect your creativity and productivity.

* Practical strategies to reduce the impact of decision fatigue in your personal and professional life.

* The importance of setting boundaries and how they can help you regain control over your schedule.

* Self-care tips for dealing with decision fatigue, especially when you share your space with others.

Ways to Prevent Decision Fatigue

* Identify Decision Fatigue: Start recognizing decision fatigue by paying attention to when you feel irritable, avoid tasks, or become overwhelmed by daily choices.

* Set Boundaries: Carve out dedicated time in your schedule for creative work and personal self-care, and communicate this clearly with those around you.

* Streamline Your Schedule: Take stock of your calendar. Use Josh’s method of marking activities with an up, side, or down arrow to determine what gives you energy and what drains it.

* Prioritize Self-Care: Engage in active self-care—whether it’s a walk, a hobby, or spending time away from screens—to reset your energy and creativity.

* Have Conversations About Boundaries: If you share your space with others, have open conversations about your needs and how they can help you protect your time for rest and self-care.

Episode 287: 4 Ways to Get Your Wedding Business Ready for Engagement Season

Let’s get your wedding business ready for engagement season!

Hey friends, welcome back to The Brand Strategy Podcast! Today’s episode is all about preparing your wedding business for the upcoming engagement season so you’re able to intentionally connect with your ideal couples when they need you the most. Whether you’re a wedding photographer, wedding or event planner, floral designer, or stationery artist, this episode is for you!

How to prep your biz for engagement season

Over the last 12 years as a brand designer and strategist, I’ve had the privilege of working with so many incredible pros in the wedding industry. I know firsthand what it takes to create elevated, high-converting brands and websites for service providers like you. I also deeply understand the consumer behavior of couples searching for their dream wedding team.

With engagement season just around the corner, couples are starting to take to the internet to find venues, florists, planners, photographers, and all the amazing pros who make their wedding dreams come true. Now is the time to ensure that your brand is ready to meet these potential clients online. So be sure to tune in above to catch the full episode!

Update Your Portfolio:

You’ve likely completed some gorgeous projects over the past several months, and now is the perfect time to showcase them. Show potential clients the best examples of your work that reflect your current style and attract the couples you want to work with.

I love using platforms like Showit because it’s so easy to upload new galleries with just a few clicks. This is also a great time to organize your portfolio strategically. For example, for my stationer clients, I love organizing their portfolio by specific stationery types—save the dates, day-of paper, invitation suites, etc.

Think about the kind of client you want to attract, and make sure your portfolio reflects that. Swap out images that no longer align with your current style or the type of work you want to continue doing.

Refresh Your Website and Services Page

While you’re updating your portfolio, take a look at your hero images and services page. Does anything need to be updated? Are your prices reflective of the elevated service you’re offering for 2025 and beyond? Small changes can make a big impact in how your brand is perceived.

Create Keyword-Rich Content

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a long game, and it’s important to start now. Adding keyword-rich content to your website and social media is an investment in your future success. If you know certain venues or locations that your ideal clients love, consider writing blog posts that showcase real weddings or projects at those venues. Include the venue name, location, and other specific details in your blog post titles, content, and image names.

For example, I once did a huge rebrand for a Dallas-based wedding photographer who had already built up a lot of SEO content for certain popular Dallas venues. We played off that strength by creating venue-specific pages and a venue directory on her website. This helped her connect with couples searching for photographers at those specific venues.

This type of content won’t go viral overnight, but over time, it will help you organically connect with your ideal clients. Which is why I highly recommend getting started now so Google has months to crawl your site in the lead up to engagement season!

Episode 283: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Business Owners Make with Lead Gen with Marion Wagner

ACQUIRING HIGH QUALITY CLIENTS AS A CREATIVE SERVICE PROVIDER

In today’s episode of the podcast, I’m chatting with Growth Strategist Marion Wagner about effective lead generation strategies for service providers. As a creative business owner, you’ve probably heard all sorts of advice around lead gen, but what are strategies actually worth implementing and which ones just won’t cut for you? In today’s episode, Marion is peeling back the curtain on lead gen tactics that aren’t worth your time, and she shares what to do instead to reach your ideal clients!

If this kind of topic is just what you’re looking for, then be sure to tune into the full episode above!

TAKEAWAYS + HELPFUL INSIGHTS TO Master Lead Gen in 2024

* Authentic Engagement: In today’s episode, Marion emphasizes the power of authentic engagement by sharing her journey from blogger to Growth Strategist and Lead Generation Expert. She also shares an engagement tip that creates the opportunity for meaningful interactions to build genuine connections.

* Mistakes to Avoid:

* Follow-Unfollow Game: Marion warns against this outdated tactic of using follow loops or giveaways. This is so 2015 anyway, right?

* Cold DM Approach: Sending unsolicited direct messages to people who don’t follow you is deemed a high-effort, low-quality lead generation strategy.

* Buying Followers: The outdated practice of purchasing followers is discouraged, as it yields inactive and disinterested accounts.

* Paying for Ads Without a Proven Offer: Marion advises against investing in ads until you a proven, well-received offer to share. This ensures you’re able to use your resources more wisely and see bigger positive outcomes as a result!

* Focus on Follower Count Over Relationships: Marion challenges the misconception that the once-coveted 10K follower count is worth it. She instead encourages building relationships by being authentic, sharing stories, and adding value. The emphasis is on quality rather than quantity, especially for those aiming for their first consistent five-figure months.

* Looking Ahead to 2024: Marion anticipates the continued importance of relationships in the online space. She advises focusing on building connections, vulnerability, and storytelling to resonate with the audience. In fact, Marion’s upcoming book, “Small Audience Big Income,” dives even deeper into this theme!

Episode 282: Intentional Business Trends for 2024

Intentional Business Trends Creatives + Service Providers in 2024

In today’s episode of the podcast, I’m chatting about the biggest business trends I anticipate impacting the way we show up both internally and externally in our businesses as creatives and service providers in 2024! The way we did things back in 2019 no longer applies, and for many of us that’s a fantastic thing. This episode shares creative ways to strategically do business your own way as we continue to dive into 2024 with intention. If this kind of topic is just what you’re looking for, then be sure to tune into the full episode above!

Intentional Business Trend Takeaways From This Episode:

* Descaling Your Business:

* I’m sharing how we’re now seeing an intentional shift away from relentless growth to thoughtful downsizing.

* Now more than ever, it’s important to align your business structure with your personal goals as the CEO of your business, along with your financial goals.

* Let’s normalize running your business in a way that works for you. Whether you dream of having a massive team or you want to stay a solopreneur, choose what works for you.

* Rethinking Million-Dollar Goals:

* At this stage in the game, do we really need to keep chasing after ever-increasing financial milestones?

* How to assess your actual financial needs and redefine success accordingly.

* Leveraging your self-awareness in determining your future business goals.

* Return of Long-Form Content:

* Blogs are back, baby! Did they ever really leave, though? In all seriousness, we’re seeing a huge resurrection of blogs, email marketing, and newsletters.

* Why long-form content on channels you own (like your newsletter or your blog) trump short-form content on channels you’re simply borrowing (like TikTok and Instagram).

* How creating more long-form content can pave the way for a deeper connection with your audience through meaningful, substantial content.

* Doing Business Your Own Way:

* We’re independent business owners so why do we insist on running our businesses like big corporate structures?

* Why I skipped the January goal-setting frenzy this year, and what I’m doing instead.

* Advocating for self-compassion as we evolve and experiment with our business strategies.
